We need to change our mindset romthinking about components to really aboutsystem designs and architectures. Its just
like a car. You can put a new spark plug inthere, but i something else is wrong, yourcar isnt going to do anything. We needto think outside o IT, about the worldaround us, and how we design things.
Andre Kindness
principal analyst, Forrester Research
The size o the company, or at least the
number o network nodes, certainly im-pacts the complexity o a network. Itdoesnt necessarily make it more dicultto expand incrementally, but it certainlymakes it more complex when you get intolarger rereshes or signicant expansions.
Mark Tauschek
lead research analyst, Ino-ech Research Group
I you decide your network is in need o expansion, the next step is to develop anexpansion plan beore making the leap to purchasing sotware or equipment.

Perormance is a keyactor in determiningwhether using a vir-tual frewall makespractical sense.
A virtual frewall can be preerableto a physical frewall or an SMB ithe company is comortable withvirtualization technology and thevirtual frewall is designed or SMBs.
Beyond some peror-mance traits, a virtual andphysical frewall rom thesame vendor oten can beunctionally equivalent.
When consideringthe use o a virtualfrewall, keep in mindhow highly regulatedthe company is.

It doesnt make sense to try to deploy a virtualrewall like a physical one because each hypervisor
is its own connection to the physical network. Thismay change in the uture, but currently i you have10 hypervisors you have to have individualconnections to the physical network.

ITAM Best Practices
Rigorous and consistent ITAM is worthwhile for numerous reasons. As Info-Tech
Research Groups Sandi Conrad says, Once the money is spent, you cant get it
back, so if youve overbought on software licenses or have lost equipment, youve
wasted money. Conversely, Conrad has seen companies cut software budgets
by 25% through better management of maintenance and support. To that end,
the following are various ITAM best practices:

Big data reers todata sets so large insize that using tradi-tional processing andanalyzing methodsis difcult.
A misconceptionregarding big datais that companiesneed millions ogigabytes o data toget started.
Companies are using bigdata to lower IT costs, increase sales, improvecustomer services, andmake business opera-tions more efcient.
Some big data apps andtechnologies are availableree or or a minimal cost, and a lot o capabilities areavailable as a service viathe Internet.

The beautiul thing now withvirtualization is that its basically an en-capsulation o the data and actual compute
cycles, so you can replicate that and evenrecover it elsewhere. Your investment inbackup and disaster recovery now extendsbeyond where we were in the past.

MOBILE OFFICEBUSINESS ON THE R OAD
IT Faces BYOD Concept With New Policies
Many businesses are facing the challenge of the consumer-
ization of IT, especially as more and more workers bring their
personal devices into the workplace. A 2012 IDC report revealedthat numerous organizations are planning to construct BYOD
(bring your own device) policies through the end of 2013. Specifi-
cally in Australia and New Zealand, IDC found that nearly half
of all businesses reviewed do not currently have a BYOD plan
in place, but CIOs and IT managers are feeling the pressure to
adapt. The following breaks down the BYOD plan deployment
among CIOs and decision makers in that region:
Report Says Wireless Is Key
To Mobile Success
A 2012 iPass survey of 1,689 mobile workers
located primarily in North America (50%) and Eu-rope (33%) found that frequently traveling and al-
ways on workers are increasingly psychologically
attached to their mobile devices, BYOD (bring
your own device) policies are showing up in more
and more organizations, and most feel that work-
ing remotely is a necessity (62%) or even a right
(7%). Here are some additional findings.

Web-based collabora-tion and fle-sharingservices generally resultin more productiveworkers but less com-pany control o data.
Many businesses are awareo associated risks but notnecessarily how many onlinecollaboration and sharingservices there are and howpervasive usage is.
Content management(including mobiledevice management) so-lutions are increasinglyincluding collaborationand fle-sharing tools.
Companies should set clear andeective guidelines concerningusage o online collaborationand sharing services and whatcompany data can be shared, with whom, and how.

MOBILE OFFICEBUSINESS ON THE ROAD
Mobile consumers are really savvy. They are actually de acto expectingcertain criteria, like usability, scalability,
and portability. All o that is kind o agiven within an app. You cant be thinkingin a single dimension anymore. Youhave to think on two dimensions. Weretalking about both a vertical and ahorizontal development strategy.
Altaz Valani
