Module Stack Configuration

The second use case uses the stack trough feature of the various module types and busses. As needed boards are combined into a stack of two or more boards to achieve the desired functionality. The diagram below illustrates a possible module stack combining PC/104-Express and PCI-104 modules.

Component-like applications

The third way is using the PC/104 modules like a highly integrated component, plugged directly into custom carrier boards which contain application-specific interfaces and

logic.

Difference between the PC/104 StandardsThe various PC/104 standards differ in their bus types offered on the stack-through connectors. Modules can offer ISA, PCI and PCI express in several combinations. The graphic below shows the different types of the PC/104 sub categories and extension busses.

PC/104 CoreModule series indicate the bus types present on the board by a number in the product name as depicted above.

PC/104 Family

PC/104 is a family of embedded computer standards which

dene both a physical form factor and computer bus. The

PC/104 concept was originally devised by Ampro in 1987, and

later standardized by the PC/104 Consortium in 1992. The name

PC/104 comes from the ISA (or PC/AT) bus and the 104 pins on

the connector.

The distinguishing features of the PC/104 family that makes

it more suited to embedded systems than motherboards with

expansion cards are:

Compact size (90 x 96 mm)

No backplane – modules stack

Interoperability with boards from numerous manufacturers

Based on familiar PC technology for ease of design anddevelopment

Rugged construction: stacking bus connectors and cornermounting holes

The PC/104-Plus specication establishes a standard for the use

of a high speed PCI bus in embedded applications. Incorporating

the PCI bus within the industry proven PC/104 form-factor brings

many advantages to its users, including fast data transfer over a

PCI bus, low cost due to PC/104’s unique self-stacking bus, and

high reliability due to PC/104’s inherent ruggedness.

The PC/104 Consortium has established the PCI/104-Express

Specication in order to support the high-performance PCI

Express interface while retaining compatibility with the existing

PC/104 infrastructure. PCI/104-Express preserves the key

attributes of PC/104 such as compact size (90 x 96 mm),

stackability, ruggedness, and compatibility with PC technology.

PCIe/104 is PCI/104-Express without the PCI bus.

Our Extreme Rugged boards and systems are designed for harsh

environments from the ground up. To support the extremes of

shock, vibration, humidity, and temperature, care is given to

component selection, circuit design, PCB layout and materials,

thermal solutions, enclosure design, and manufacturing process.

Robust test methods, including Highly Accelerated Life Testing

(HALT), ensure optimal product design phases and meet stringent

requirements such as -40°C to +85°C operating temperature

range, MIL-STD, shock & vibration, and long-term reliability.

Extreme Rugged™

Although conguration and application possibilities with

PC/104 modules are practically limitless, there are three basic

ways they can be used in embedded system designs:

Stand alone module stacks

In this approach, the module is used as ultra-compact computer

boards, but without needing backplanes, card cages or carrier boards.

Module Stack Configuration

The second use case uses the stack trough feature of the various

module types and busses. As needed boards are combined into

a stack of two or more boards to achieve the desired functionality.

PC/104 Selection GuidePC/104 Single Board Computers

Extreme Rugged™

Although conguration and application possibilities with

PC/104 modules are practically limitless, there are three basic

ways they can be used in embedded system designs:

Stand alone module stacks

In this approach, the module is used as ultra-compact computer

boards, but without needing backplanes, card cages or carrier boards.

Module Stack Configuration

The second use case uses the stack trough feature of the various

module types and busses. As needed boards are combined into

a stack of two or more boards to achieve the desired functionality.

The diagram below illustrates a possible module stack combining

PC/104-Express and PCI-104 modules.

Component-like applications

The third way is using the PC/104 modules like a highly integrated

component, plugged directly into custom carrier boards which

contain application-specic interfaces and logic.

Difference between the PC/104 Standards

The various PC/104 standards differ in their bus types offered on the

stack-through connectors. Modules can offer ISA, PCI and PCI

express in several combinations. The graphic below shows the

different types of the PC/104 sub categories and extension busses.

PC/104 FamilyPC/104 is a family of embedded computer standards which define both a physical form factor and computer bus. The PC/104 concept was originally devised by Ampro in 1987, and later standardized by the PC/104 Consortium in 1992. The name PC/104 comes from the ISA (or PC/AT) bus and the 104 pins on the connector.

The distinguishing features of the PC/104 family that makes it more suited to embedded systems than motherboards with expansion cards are:

• Compact size (90 x 96 mm)

• No backplane – modules stack

• Interoperability with boards from numerous manufacturers

• Based on familiar PC technology for ease of design and

development

• Rugged construction: stacking bus connectors and corner

mounting holes

The PC/104-Plus specification establishes a standard for the use of a high speed PCI bus in embedded applications. Incorporating the PCI bus within the industry proven PC/104 form-factor brings many advantages to its users, including fast data transfer over a PCI bus, low cost due to PC/104’s unique self-stacking bus, and high reliability due to PC/104’s inherent ruggedness.

The PC/104 Consortium has established the PCI/104-Express Specification in order to support the high-performance PCI Express interface while retaining compatibility with the existing PC/104 infrastructure. PCI/104-Express preserves the key attributes of PC/104 such as compact size (90 x 96 mm), stackability, ruggedness, and compatibility with PC technology. PCIe/104 is PCI/104-Express without the PCI bus.
