How to use this guideNote

This guide is limited to installing and/ or updating the LexisNexis PCLaw application. For an overview and/ or information used for PCLaw administration, please refer to PCLaw Administration Guide and/ or the associated Help files. 

This guide provides PCLaw administrative personnel with a set of procedures used to install and/ or update the LexisNexis PCLaw application. It also provides PCLaw administrative personnel with the information and procedures used to install and enable the PCLaw® Mobility application.

Where to startIf this is the first time you have installed LexisNexis PCLaw, please read this guide carefully before proceeding. Please refer to PCLaw Pre-Installation Checklist for a complete set of instructions and the requirements needed to install the PCLaw application.

If you are updating from a previous version of LexisNexis PCLaw, please refer to Upgrade an earlier version PCLaw with Ctree to 15.0 or to Upgrade an earlier version of PC Law  SQL  to 15.0 for a detailed  set of instructions.

Before installing the softwareBefore installing any PCLaw software: 

 n Read this Installation and Upgrade Guide thoroughly.

 n Review and/ or print the checklist provided  to assist you in successfully completing the installation.

 n Check each item off the checklist as it is completed through completion of the installation procedure.

Define the Host EnvironmentIf installing the PCLaw software for the first time, it is necessary to create a healthy environment to host the LexisNexis PCLaw software. At this stage, decisions include determining the server, the operating system, how powerful the server must be, the appropriate amount of disk space, and whether the network is capable of handling the anticipated traffic.

Operating SystemPCLaw supports the Microsoft operating system. For supported versions, see PCLaw Operating System Requirements. It is critical that the operating system used to host LexisNexis PCLaw is a supported or compatible operating system.

Checklist Compliance and AssistanceIt is pertinent that each item in the checklist be reviewed and completed prior to attempting to install any PCLaw software. Additional information regarding PCLaw and the installation are listed below.

 n Annual Maintenance Plan: For assistance on obtaining an Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP), please contact the LexisNexis Practice Management Sales department at 1-800-328-2898.

 n Requirements: To ensure your firm's system meets or exceeds the minimum set of requirements, see PCLaw Operating System Requirements.

 n PCLaw setup file: To download and run the PCLaw setup file, refer to the Download and Run the Installer topic for assistance.

 n Subsequent PCs: After the PCLaw installation is complete, you will be asked if installation for additional workstations/ PCs is required. If so, follow the steps provided in the procedure for adding subsequent PCs.

 n PCLaw initial setup: To complete the initial PCLaw setup, complete the steps provided in the Initializing PCLaw Data topic for instructions.

 n PCLaw Mobility: If your firm will use PCLaw Mobility, follow the steps provided in the Installing and Enabling PCLaw Mobility section of this manual.

PCLaw Pre-installation ChecklistThis checklist is intended for use by PCLaw administrators who have reviewed the PCLaw installation documentation and are preparing to install the software for the first time on a new server.         

PCLaw Pre-Installation Checklist

  Your firm has an active Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP) with a Product Key.

 If installing PCLaw for the first time on a new server, the following components of the firm's new PCLaw Host environment server have been determined:

   1.  Operating System

   2.  Database

   3.  Data storage location

  The system meets the minimum/recommended set of requirements. 

  All users are logged out of PCLaw.

  A complete backup of the PCLaw database and documents has been done

  The computer has a network drive mapped to the PCLaw shared components folder.

 The PCLaw setup file has been downloaded from pclaw.com/techpage OR the entitlement email has been received.

  Will PCLaw Mobility be installed for the firm?

   1.  If Yes, complete the Install PCLaw Link as a Service procedure.

   2.  Enable PCLaw Mobility feature for the entire firm.

   3.  Enable PCLaw Mobility for each Mobility user within the firm.

   4.  Download and install the PCLaw Mobility Access Manager.

Back Up the PCLaw Data 1.  Select File > Backup/ Restore > Backup Data from the main menu.

A PCLaw advisory screen displays.

 2.  Click Yes to confirm that you are the only user currently logged in and to continue.

A PCLaw Backup Advisory screen displays.

Note

If you are not the only user in PCLaw, all other users must exit PCLaw before you can backup your data.

 3.  Click OK. The PCLaw Archive - Export File window appears.

 4.  Select a location to save your backup file and enter a file name.

Note

We recommend that you rename the file to include the date so that you can easily distinguish your backup files and to help prevent overriding older files.

 5.  Click Save to create the backup file.

 6.  A PCLaw Prompt will appear, asking you to confirm the location, and recommending a location on another drive.

 7.  Click Yes to confirm the backup location. A backup progress meter appears.

Once the Backup is complete, click Close to return to PCLaw desktop.

Download and run the installer on the host machineInstallation and update tasks are accomplished using the LexisNexis PCLaw Installer. It  scans the workstation and is used to either install a new installation of LexisNexis PCLaw or update an existing installation. 

Access to the Installer is via your firm's Product Keys/ Entitlement email and is used to download the latest version of the PCLaw application software for new releases, service packs, and/ or hot fixes. The installer can also be downloaded from www.pclaw.com/techpage.

Warning

Although the Installer can be run more than once, if it is stopped before completion, it must be restarted from the beginning. 

Before you begin: Ensure you have the firm's Product Keys/ Entitlement email.

Download and run the installer 1.  Click the 'download your software' link in your Product Key/ Entitlement email.

The Download your software link displays.

 2.  Click the link associated with the Download your software from the link below topic. 

The LexisNexis Delivery window opens.

 

 3.  Click the Download button. 

An Important Notice page appears. Please read the note and click Continue.

 4.  The Download PCLaw page is displayed.

Read the instructions on the page and click Copy Key and Continue Download to download and run the Installer.

 5.  When the Installer is finished downloading, it will run automatically.

Proceed to the New PCLaw Installation  procedure for new installs, or see Update LexisNexis PCLaw for PCLaw application updates to continue.

Installing  PCLaw on a new Server systemAfter you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw installer from the www.pclaw.com/techpage, it is time to install the program. If you are installing to a Server without any data, follow the instructions below. If you are installing PCLaw on a system that already has PCLaw data, please skip to Installing PCLaw to an existing Database. 

Before you begin the installation: 

 n Ensure that you have reviewed and completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist

 n Close all programs

Install the PCLaw application 1.  Run the PCLaw installer from your entitlement email, or download it from www.pclaw.com/techpage, and 

run it.

 2.  If the Microsoft .Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will prompt you to install it. Click Install.

When the User Account Control appears, click Yes.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 will install itself automatically.

 3.  Once the Microsoft .NET framework is installed, the PCLaw installer may show several screens before  prompting you to choose an Installation method.

Make sure that Install SQL Server Express components with SQL Server Management Studio and PCLaw is selected and Check the box confirming that you have read the End User License Agreement.

Note

If SQL has already been installed on the installation server, you may select Install, Update or Reinstall PCLaw instead.

 4.  Click Next.

 5.  On the Installation Checklist window, verify that each condition on the checklist is satisfied, and check each box.

 6.  Click Next.

An Important Note appears, explaining that multiple User Account Control requests are likely to appear during installation.

 7.  Please read this note and click Next.

 8.  On the SQL Server Password window, enter a valid password for your new SQL server's sa account.

 9.  Click Next. A UAC prompt will appear.

 10.  Click Yes. Another Prompt will appear.

 11.  Click Yes again. A notification will appear, to warn you of User Account Controls that are not immediately visible.

 12.  Click OK to confirm and continue. PCLaw will begin downloading the SQL setup executable. 

 

Stay alert for a flashing user account control notification in the task bar.

 13.  Once it appears, click Yes. PCLaw will extract the SQL files.

A  UAC prompt will appear.

 14.  Click Yes to this prompt.

 15.  Click Yes to the next UAC prompt as well.

At this point, the PCLaw installer will begin the process of downloading and installing a SQL Server to act as your PCLaw database. This process is automatic, but can take some time.

 16.  Once the SQL installation has completed, the End User License Agreement window will appear. Review the License Agreement information. 

Note

You must read to the bottom of the End User License Agreement, and ensure that the scroll bar is at the bottom as well, in order for the 'Next' button to become available.

 17.  Click Next.

Clicking the Next button implies that you have read and agree with the End User License Agreement.

The Installation Agreement window opens.

 18.  Check the check box to agree to the Installation Agreement. 

 19.  Click Next.

The Data Set Create/ Attach window opens.

 20.  Select the Create a new data set option. 

 21.  Click Next. 

The Enter Product Key window opens.

 22.  Enter the Product Key obtained from the firm's entitlement email.

Note

The Next button becomes available only after the Product Key is correctly entered.If you copied your product key from the download page, the paste button can be used to insert the key without having to manually type it in.

 23.  Click Next.

The Select Destination window opens.

 24.  Accept the defaults for the installation location, or use the Change... button to change the location.

 25.  Click Next.

Note

Install your PCLaw books to a shared network location where all PCLaw users will have both Read and Write permissions.

The Ready to Install window opens.

 27.  A UAC prompt will appear.

Click Yes to continue with the installation.

 28.  Once the installation is complete, the Initialize Data window opens.

Note

As PCLaw uses a SQL database, it is possible to host the PCLaw application on a different server than its database. When this is the case, PCLaw cannot make automatic database backups. Please make sure to create regular backups of your PCLaw SQL Database via Microsoft SQL Studio Manager if it is hosted on a different environment than the PCLaw application.

 29.  To open PCLaw and initialize your data, select  Initialize my data now and click Finish. This completes the installation and opens PCLaw with the Data Initialization window open. 

To complete the installation and not initialize data, select I will initialize my data later and click Finish to finish the installation and close the installer.

Refer to Initialize PCLaw Data for the detailed procedure used to complete the data initialization process.

Upgrade  an earlier version of PCLaw  with a Ctree database to PCLaw 15.0After you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw setup file, you are nearly ready to upgrade the Ctree version of PCLaw to PCLaw 15.0 (SQL).

Before you begin the upgrade: 

 n Ensure that you have reviewed and/ or completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist

 n Ensure all users are logged out of PCLaw

 n Make a complete backup of PCLaw and store it on another machine or separate media.

 n Close all programs

 n Obtain the PCLaw setup file from www.pclaw.com/techpage, or run  it from the entitlement email

Upgrade the PCLaw application 1.  On the host machine, run the PCLaw Installer. 

If Microsoft .Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will Prompt you to install it.

 2.  Click Install.

 3.  When the User Account Control appears, click Yes.

 5.  Once the Microsoft .NET framework is installed, the PCLaw installer may show several preparation screen before prompting you to choose an Installation method.

To update the books:

It is possible to host the PCLaw application on a different server than the PCLaw database. When this is the case, PCLaw cannot make automatic database backups. Please ensure to make regular backups of your PCLaw SQL Database via Microsoft SQL Studio Manager if it is hosted on a different environment than the PCLaw application.

Upgrade  an earlier version of PCLaw SQL to 15.0After you have completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist and obtained the PCLaw setup file from the techpage, you are nearly ready to upgrade the prior SQL version of PCLaw to version 15.0.

Before you begin the upgrade: 

 n Ensure that you have reviewed and/ or completed the PCLaw Pre-installation Checklist

 n Ensure all users are logged out of PCLaw

 n Make a complete backup of PCLaw and store it on another machine or separate media.

 n Close all programs

 n Obtain the PCLaw setup file from www.pclaw.com/techpage or run it from the entitlement email

Upgrade the PCLaw application 1.  On the host machine, run the PCLaw installer.

 2.  If Microsoft .Net Framework is not installed on the Server, the PCLaw Installer will Prompt you to install it. Click Install.

Microsoft .NET Framework 4.5 will install itself automatically. Once it has finished installing, the PCLaw upgrade will resume.

 3.  PCLaw may prompt you to restart your computer to continue the installation.

Performing a Maintenance Installation  The PCLaw installer still has several uses, even after being used to install or upgrade to PCLaw 15.0. These uses are referred to as Maintenance Installations, and include the ability to add new books to PCLaw, to attach an existing database to your PCLaw installation, and to repair your PCLaw installation.

Adding new Books to PCLawThe PCLaw installer can be used to add additional set of books to PClaw, if you have additional product keys to activate each new set. This process can only be performed on a machine that already has PCLaw installed.

 1.  Run the PCLaw Installer. For this process, please run the installer from:

 n Start >Program Files > LexisNexis > PCLaw > Setup

or from the installer located in the

 n PCLaw Data > Common > Install folder.

 2.  Once the installer starts, the End User License Agreement window will open.

Installing PCLaw and attaching it to an existing databaseIf you would like to access a PCLaw database from a machine that does not have PCLaw installed,  you can simply run the installation file on that machine and attach to the database.

Before you begin the installation:

 n Obtain the PCLaw setup file from the PCLaw folder stored on your network.

Install the PCLaw software on additional workstations that do not have PCLawBefore you begin: 

 n Ensure that you have installed the application on a network server that can be accessed by others

 n Ensure that each workstation has access to the shared folder/ network server

 n Close all programs

 1.  Browse to the PCLaw initial common folder. This is typically located on the server where the data is stored. The default is: C:\PCLaw Data\COMMON\INSTALL.

 2.  Select the Netsetup.bat file. Alternately, you may run the PCLaw installer, but only if you are already running the latest version of PCLaw.

InstallShield will prepare the installation.

 3.  Once it is finished preparing, the Installation options window appears.

Upgrade the PCLaw software on additional workstations that have an earlier version of PCLaw installedPCLaw workstations can be upgraded in two ways, by running PCLaw and allowing it to update automatically, or running the PCLaw installer and performing a manual update.

Before you begin: 

 n Ensure that the host machine has been updated to the latest version of PCLaw

 n Ensure that each workstation has access to the shared folder/ network server

 n Close all programs

Automatic upgrade 1.  Log into PCLaw.

 2.  PCLaw will detect that it is not current and prompt you to upgrade.

 3.  Click Yes.

Installing and Enabling PCLaw MobilitySetting up PCLaw Mobility requires you to do the following:

 1.  Ensure that your firm has an active Annual Maintenance Plan (AMP).

 2.  Install the PCLaw Link as a Windows service.

 3.  Enable the Mobility feature for your entire firm.

 4.  Enable the Mobility feature for each PCLaw user who will use Mobility.

 5.  Download and install the LexisNexis® Mobility Access Manager.

Install the PCLaw Link as a Windows ServiceTo use PCLaw Mobility, you must run a utility provided with PCLaw that installs PCLaw link components as Windows Services. The utility is available on the Windows Start menu.

Note

If the PCLaw database is not on the same machine where the LexisNexis Mobility Access Manager is being installed, PCLaw must be configured to access its database using a Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path.

 1.  On the Windows Start menu, go to Start > All Programs > LexisNexis > PCLaw > Utilities > Configure Link to Run as Windows Services.

Enable PCLaw Mobility for the firmThe Mobility feature must be enabled for your entire firm and for each individual user.

To enable Mobility for the firm:

 1.  Log in to PCLaw as a user with administrative rights.

 2.  Select               Options > Administrator> Security Preferences from the main menu.

 3.  Select the Enable Advanced Securitycheckbox. Click OK.

Enable Mobility for an individual user 1.  Log in to PCLaw as a user with administrative rights.

Update and upgrade LexisNexis PCLawThis section provides you with information and procedures needed to update and/ or upgrade your PCLaw software to the latest version. Please refer to the Configure update settings  and/ or LexisNexis PCLaw manual updates sections for detailed procedures.

An update installs the new features and fixes associated with a new release. An error message will appear if it is not possible to update from the current version to the Updated version.

To obtain the best performance from PCLaw, ensure it is updated to the latest version. You can have PCLaw do this automatically on a set schedule, or you can update manually. When updating your PCLaw application, be sure the following conditions are met:

 n All users are logged out of PCLaw.

 n All other applications are closed.

 n A complete backup of PCLaw has been made and stored on another machine or separate media.

Note

You must have Administrator access to perform updates.

Configure update settingsTo configure your PCLaw application update settings and to enable automatic updates, follow the instructions below:

 1.  Select  Options > Administrator > Update Settings from the main menu to bring up the Update Settings screen.

 2.  Select the appropriate method of updating from the selections described below.

 n Check for updates weekly: PCLaw will check for updates once a week and will automatically install any found. This is the default setting.

 n Check for updates weekly, but ask me first. : PCLaw will check for updates weekly, but will not apply them without prompting.

 n Do not check for updates on this machine. : No updates will occur. 

 n Do not check for updates on any machine. : No updates on any machine running PCLaw with a shared database.

 3.  Click the OK button to confirm the update method. The Updates Settings screen will close.

LexisNexis PCLaw manual updatesTo manually update LexisNexis PCLaw, perform the following:

 1.  1.  Open the PCLaw application. 

 2.  Select Help > My Account >  Check for Updates... from the main menu.

The PCLaw Live Update screen opens. 

 3.  Click the ‘Start Check for Updates’ link.

The web based update engine checks your currently installed version of PCLaw and displays available updates

Note

Your browser may need to install an Active X control to allow the update engine to search your version of PCLaw. At the top of the web page will be installation instructions.

Upgrade  LexisNexis Mobility Access ManagerTo successfully upgrade to the latest version of PCLaw Mobility, you must install the latest version of LexisNexis® Mobility Access Manager using the following procedure.

Note

Install LexisNexis Mobility Access Manager on the same PC as the PCLaw Link Services.

 1.  Open a web browser and go to http://support.pclaw.com/techpage, the PCLaw download page.

 2.  Select PCLaw® Version XX.X (where XX.X equals the latest version) from the drop-down list and click Go.

 3.  Enter your firm's information in all required boxes marked with an asterisk.

 4.  Click I have read and agree with the End-User License Agreement.

The LexisNexis Available Downloads page displays.

 5.  Click download under the action column to download the latest version of the LexisNexis® Mobility Access Manager.

 6.  Click Save to save the file to your desktop.

 7.  Double-click the setup.exe file on your desktop and click Run to run the installer. 

Note

If Microsoft .NET 4.0 is not detected on your computer, the installer downloads and installs it.
