PCS IntroductionPolyfab Coatings & Systems Ltd is the UK’s premier manufacturer of reinforced construction boards, raised and level shower-trays and tile-able bath panels.

PCS thermal substrate board and profi les have been developed for use in Wet-Rooms, Walk-In-Showers, Spa’s and Swimming Pools where:

• A rigid, lightweight surface is required for the application of a fi nal decorative surface treatment, such as fl oor/wall tiles, thin coat render systems or a plaster surface.

• The high moisture content in these areas prevents the use of conventional cladding products such as plaster-board.

The polyfab materialPCS Thermal Substrate Board is constructed with a rigid extruded polystyrene core which is coated on both sides with an alkaline resistant glass fi bre reinforcement mesh, encapsulated in a highly polymer modifi ed cementitious coating. This coating provides signifi cant impact strength to the foam core and creates a tile ready surface. The foam core provides thermal insulation and excellent compressive strength.

Shower wetroom systems & shower traysPCS Shower Trays have been designed for use with walk in shower enclosures, providing a tileable shower base, avoiding the need for the traditional “step-in” white acrylic tray. It is a lightweight shower base with pre-made falls to the drain, and is coated with a cementitious layer to receive a tiled surface.

PCS thermal substrate boards will eliminate many of the problems associated with damp penetration, especially on suspended timber fl oors, whilst also providing insulation against heat loss. On solid concrete fl oors the benefi t comes from preventing heat loss downward to the sub fl oor.

Floors in bathroom areas will get wet. On suspended timber fl oors this will eventually lead to tiles lifting as the grout and adhesive breaks down and water seeps through to the timber sub fl oor causing it to swell and warp. PCS will eliminate this problem.

Where a tillable shower enclosure (Max 1800 x 900mm) is required, but a drain cannot be situated within the fl oor or under the fl oor boards. (This may be the result of a concrete fl oor, in a new build for example or where a structural joist under the fl oor boards may confl ict with the location of the drain.)

When longer runs are required for drainage: The pipe work contained within the fl oor, may not be long enough to achieve the necessary fall from drain to soil pipe.

Where the drainage system can be placed within the fl oor boards or screeded fl oor.

Standard shower traysStandard PCS shower trays (not in kit format) allow for total flexibility and give the installer the option of building

their own wetroom system.A drain and installation kit will be required to complete the application (See page 14.)

Shower trays with centre drainsCentre drains are more uniform in appearance and offer an easier tiling option than an offset drain.

Only suitable where the drain can be situated within the floor or under the floor boards, without conflicting with a structural joist.

Locate the PCS Drain Fitting Aid on the newly installed platform and ensure that the centre of the drain is in the correct position for the desired routing of the waste pipe and aligns correctly with the drain position on the shower tray. The Drain Fitting Aid can be easily trimmed to accommodate any adjustments that may be required.

Step 8

How to install level wetroom kitsLevel Wetroom Shower Kits from PCS are designed to create a fl at, un-stepped tiled waterproof shower area. This kit is ideally suited for installation on a timber fl oor where the drain and waste can be accommodated under the existing fl oorboards.

The installation begins by removing the existing fl oor boards in the area where the tray is to be fi tted. The coated Shower Tray is pre-machined with falls to the drain position. It requires additional support which is achieved by installing timber battens and marine ply between the fl oor joists. Conventional fl oor boards are approximately 20mm thick so once installed this 30mm thick tray will be 10mm proud of the surrounding fl oor area. This step is eliminated by covering the surrounding area with 10mm thick PCS Thermal Tilebacker Boards. The entire area will then be waterproof and thermally insulated making it an ideal construction for the incorporation of electrical underfl oor heating.

Alternatively you can use one of our Standard Shower Trays, most of which are 20mm thick, similar to the thickness of fl oor boards.

Clear the working area. The fl oor area should be free from loose debris and grease.

Step 1

Construct the timber platform by fastening 50 x 25mm battens to the adjacent fl oor joists and adding a plywood base. This base needs to be positioned 86mm below the top surface of the fl oor joists so that the top surface of the PCS Drain Fitting Aid fi nishes fl ush with the top of the fl oor joists.

Step 7

The drain will be held in place during assembly with a PCS Drain Fitting Aid supported by a timber platform.

Step 6

Place the Shower Tray in the desired position. The tray can be easily trimmed with hand tools if necessary. Layout the rest of the fl oor area with the 10mm PCS Thermal Tilebacker boards and cut them to suit the fi nal layout.

Step 2

Remove the fl oor boards from the area where the tray is to be fi xed. Ensure that the fl oor boards are removed back to the centre line of the nearest fl oor joist.

Remove the Tilebacker boards and mark out the fl oorboard in the area where the tray is to be positioned.

Identify the position of the drain and trap.

Step 5

Place the PCS Drain and Trap in the Drain Fitting Aid with the rubber seal in place. Connect up the waste water pipe and again check that the drain lines up with the drain position in the shower tray.

Step 9

If excess fl oorboards had to be removed to get back to the nearest fl oor joist then the additional void will need to be back fi lled with off cuts of the original fl oor boards or more marine ply.

Step 11

You now need to construct a level platform over the rest of the shower tray area to support the tray. This platform must be fl ush with the top surface of the fl oor joists and should be constructed from 50 x 25mm timber battens fastened securely to the joists. With the battens securely fastened to the joists insert 18mm marine ply and fi x to the battens. The top of the plywood boards should come fl ush with the top of the fl oor joists.

Step 10

The PCS Shower Tray should now fi t snugly onto the newly constructed platform but will protrude approximately 10mm proud of the remaining fl oor area. Check the alignment of the drain with the drain position in the shower tray and adjust as necessary.

Mix approx 5kg of PCS Fixing Adhesive according to the instructions on the packaging. The PCS Fixing Adhesive is a cement based, rapid set, fl exible adhesive. Apply a bed of adhesive to the area were the Shower Tray is to be secured using a notched trowel. This adhesive bed should be a minimum of 3mm thick but could be thicker in local areas if there are any low spots.

Step 13

Apply a bead of the PCS Waterproof Joint Adhesive/Sealant to the edges of the Shower Tray. Locate the Shower Tray in position and fi rm down onto the adhesive bed. Check that the four edges of the tray are level using a spirit-level.

Step 14

Alternatively on wooden fl oors the boards can be secured with mechanical fi xings.

Step 18

Using the Securing Tool that is supplied with the Drain and Trap, screw the trap assembly into the drain body through the Shower Tray before the adhesive hardens.

Locate the boards in position and fi rm down onto the adhesive bed. Using a spirit level, check that the boards are level. Allow the adhesives to set for at least 5 hours before proceeding with the next step in the process.

Mix the remainder of the PCS Fixing Adhesive according to the instructions on the packaging. Apply a bed of adhesive to the area where the PCS Tilebacker boards are to be secured using a notched trowel. This adhesive bed should be a minimum of 3mm thick but could be thicker in local areas if there are any low spots.

Step 16

Apply the PCS Alkaline Resistant Jointing Tape to all joints and corners. All joints must be bridged with the tape. At corner positions where the base meet the walls, it is recommended that the tape is cut 50mm to centre allowing the tape to be folded promoting a neat 90° bend. If the mesh is cut short another piece can be added but must overlay the existing mesh by 50mm.

Mix the PCS Tanking Compound powder with the liquid in the PCS Tanking Flexible Additive according to the instructions on the packaging. We would recommend that you only mix small quantities to start with until you become comfortable with handling this material. Apply a coating of the mixed PCS Tanking Compound over the taped joints using a plastering trowel or spatula ensuring good compaction into corners and joints. The coating should be applied sparingly at approximately 0.5mm to 1mm thick and beyond the edges of the tape so that it is at least 150mm wide. Once all joints have been coated and smoothed down allow approx 4 hrs to dry prior to applying a second layer of paste. Drying time may vary and is dependent entirely on temperature and air fl ow. When the fi rst layer of paste is touch dry apply a thin second coating over the joints again between 0.5mm and 1mm thick. Smooth down when fi nished ensuring no unsightly lumps or paste build up in corners which could cause problems for tiling.

Step 21

PCS can supply galvanised screws and appropriate 35mm diameter galvanised washers. These mechanical fi xings should be positioned at minimum centres of 300mm. All holes through the boards should be sealed with PCS Tanking Compound (see section 17).

PCS would recommend that any plasterboard on the walls of your proposed wet area is replaced with PCS Thermal Tilebacker Boards to give a complete waterproof solution. If this is not possible then the mixed PCS Tanking Compound can be used to coat the lower wall area to prevent moisture damage. Up to a height of 1.5m is recommended as a minimum amount of protection against rising moisture.

Step 23

You can now complete the tiling of your new wet area. Plan the tiling of the tray area fi rst. The Drain and Trap assembly comes complete with a raising frame that accommodates the thicker stone tiles. Apply tiles from the drain area to the edges of the tray by respecting the inbuilt falls in the tray working from the corners of the drain to the corners of the tray. In wet bare foot areas tiles no smaller than 20mm mosaics should be used.

Step 24

Complete the tiling of the room and add any shower screens as required. Remember to apply some PCS Waterproof Joint Adhesive/Sealant into any holes drilled through your tiles or tray that are required to fi x your shower screens or accessories.

Locate the Drain and Trap in position and connect up the waste pipe. Ensure all joints are water tight as you will not be able to return to this assembly later. Lay the Shower Tray over the waste assembly and again check that the drain lines up with the drain position in the shower tray, make any adjustments as necessary.

Using the Securing Tool that is supplied with the Drain and Trap, screw the trap assembly into the drain body through the Shower Tray before the adhesive has had chance to cure. Allow the adhesives to set for at least 5 hours.

Mix the remainder of the supplied PCS Fixing Adhesive and apply a further bed, approximately 3mm thick, to the top of the Raising Piece.

Apply a bead of the PCS Waterproof Joint Adhesive/Sealant to the edges of the Shower Tray that are to come into contact with the walls. Locate the Shower Tray in position on the Raising Piece and fi rm down onto the adhesive bed and against the walls.

Apply the PCS Alkaline Resistant Jointing Tape to all joints and corners. All joints must be bridged with the tape. At corner position where the base meet the walls, it is recommended that the tape is cut 50mm to centre allowing the tape to be folded promoting a neat 90° bend. If the mesh is cut short another piece can be added but must overlay the existing mesh by 50mm.

Clear the working area. The fl oor area should be free from loose debris and grease. The concrete fl oor should be primed with a good quality acrylic primer.

Position the Raising Piece on the Fixing Adhesive and fi rm down to ensure an even contact with the adhesive bed. Check that the surface of the raising piece is level using a spirit level.

Mix half the supplied quantity of PCS Fixing Adhesive according to the instructions on the packaging. The PCS Fixing Adhesive is a cement based, rapid set, fl exible adhesive. This adhesive bed should be a minimum of 3mm thick but could be considerably thicker in local areas if there are any low spots.

Position the Raising Piece and mark out the desired position of the waste pipe. If necessary drill through the wall to take the waste.

How to install raised wetroom kitsThe Raised Wetroom Shower Kits from PCS are designed to create a raised tiled waterproof shower area. They are ideally suited for installation above concrete fl oors where the drain and waste can be accommodated within the raised platform preventing any excavation of the existing concrete fl oor. This kit can also be used to create a raised shower area on a wooden fl oor.

The coated Shower Tray is pre-machined with falls to the drain position and the Raising Piece is pre-machined to take the waste water drain and trap. The Shower Tray and Raising Piece can easily be trimmed to suit your fl oor area. Once you have identifi ed the routing for your waste water pipe the Raising Piece needs to be cut with simple hand tools.
