Dear  Staff,  

I  am  pleased  to  announce  the  WINTER  COURSE  SCHEDULE  for  the  DISTRICT  PROFESSIONAL  DEVELOPMENT  ACADEMY  of  the  BRICK  TOWNSHIP  PUBLIC  SCHOOLS.    The  courses  include  those  which  have  been  identified  through  surveys  and  workshop  evaluations  as  being  valuable  to  our  district  staff,  as  well  as  new  offerings  that  are  presented  to  appeal  to  your  interests  and  support  professional  growth.  

The  workshops  in  the  Winter  Schedule  reflect  the  Brick  Township  Board  of  Education’s  District  Goals  and  Objectives  for  school  improvement  and  the  NJDOE  mandates  related  to  the  Core  Content  Standards  and  their  related  assessments.  

PD  courses  are  voluntary  and  professional  development  participation  will  be  recorded  upon  successful  completion  of  all  course  and  attendance  requirements.  This  will  be  applied  to  your  PROFESSIONAL  DEVELOPMENT  REQUIREMENT  HOURS  and  your  PROFESSIONAL  GROWTH  OBJECTIVES.  

I  wish  to  thank  the  Board  of  Education  and  the  BTEA  for  their  support.    Our  enthusiastic  and  stellar  in-­‐district  trainers  are  to  be  commended  for  sharing  their  expertise.

ActivTable  (Promethean)  Introduction

Description:  Overview  of  the  basic  use  of  the  Promethean  ActivTable  as  an  interactive  learning  device.  Learn  how  to  control  the  ActivTable  and  practice  using  the  main  tools.  Be  prepared  to  enjoy  yourself  as  student  ambassadors  will  then  teach  you  a  variety  of  educational  activities  geared  for  math,  literacy  and  content  areas  across  K-­‐5  grade  levels.

Common  Core  Strategies  –  Secondary  Focus    

Presenter:  Jennifer  Monninger

Description:  What  does  the  Common  Core  have  to  do  with  my  classroom  and  me?  This  workshop  is  all  about  this  very  topic.    How  can  I  incorporate  the  common  core  into  my  every  day  instruction?  Am  I  already  doing  the  common  core  and  I  don’t  even  know  it?  How  are  the  common  core  standards  different  from  the  standards  of  the  past?  Each  of  these  questions  will  be  explored  in  a  workshop  that  targets  ELA  teachers  and  anyone  who  teaching  students  to  read  in  any  discipline.  We  will  discuss  the  differences  between  each  grade  level  and  their  standards.  We  will  discuss  different  focuses  and  difference  activities  you  can  do  to  assure  your  students  are  getting  what  they  need  to  success.  The  common  core  is  all  about  rigor  and  variety.  How  can  we  assure  that  our  students  are  getting  the  rigor  and  the  variety  they  need  to  be  successful  on  the  new  state  testing?  The  first  step  is  to  come  to  this  workshop.

Designing  a  “Math  Workout”  using  Math  Expressions    

Presenter:  Amanda  Beattie

Description:  In  this  workshop,  we  will  review  the  differentiation  components  of  Math  Expressions.    We  will  discuss  how  to  design  a  lesson  that  differentiates  instruction  and  meets  the  individual  needs  of  your  students.  Using  samples  of  student  work,  we  will  determine  groups  and  activities  for  a  “Math  Workout”.    Possible  scenarios  for  managing  these  lessons  will  also  be  presented.

Description:  A  rapid-­‐fire  session  of  apps  that  can  be  used  across  grade  levels  and  curriculum  areas.  Learn  about  top  educational  apps  for  digital  storytelling,  student  creativity  and  augmented  reality.    Correlations  with  Common  Core  Curriculum  Standards  and  Marzano  best  practices  will  be  addressed.  **This  specific  workshop  is  geared  for  grades  2-­‐5.

Description:  This  workshop  is  a  breakout  session  of  4  student  response  and  interactive  apps  guaranteed  to  keep  students  engaged  and  performing  at  highest  levels  of  learning.  Practice  using  Nearpod,  Socrative,  Educreations  and  ShowMe,  all  of  which  allow  for  instantaneous  assessment  for  any  content  area.    Bring  some  grade  level  materials  with  you  so  that  you  can  practice  creating  lessons.    Correlations  with  Common  Core  State  Standards  and  Marzano  best  practices  will  be  addressed.  Take  your  lessons  from  developing  to  innovative!  

Appy  Hour  #2:  Student  Presentation  Apps  Dates/Times:  3/10  @4:00

Description:  This  workshop  is  a  breakout  session  of  5  student  presentation  apps  that  encourage  high  levels  of  thinking  and  creativity  for  any  content  area.  Your  students  will  love  sharing  their  knowledge  through  the  use  of  Keynote,  Haiku  Deck,  Prezi,  iMovie  trailers  and  Tellagami.    Bring  some  grade  level  materials  with  you  so  that  you  can  practice  creating  lessons.    Correlations  with  Common  Core  State  Standards  and  Marzano  best  practices  will  be  addressed.  Take  your  lessons  from  developing  to  innovative!

iPad  Application  Series  2

Interactive  Presentations  and  Assessments  on  the  iPad  Using  Nearpod  and  Socrative  Dates/Times:  2/11  @7:10  am  

Description:  Participants  will  learn  how  to  use  Nearpod  and  Socrative  on  iPads  in  order  to  create  highly  engaging  interactive  presentations  and  student  response  systems  that  can  be  used  to  assess  student  understanding  and  monitor  student  progress  in  real-­‐time.  

Engaging  and  Monitoring  Students  Through  Technology  Dates/Times:  3/4  @7:10  am  

Description:  Participants  will  learn  how  to  create  and  manage  Google  Forms  as  assessment  tools,  and  create  QR  codes  to  streamline  student  access  to  web  pages.  In  addition,  participants  will  also  learn  how  to  integrate  the  app  Evernote  as  a  tool  to  monitor,  assess  and  store  student  work  samples  in  the  format  of  an  online  portfolio.  Finally,  participants  will  learn  how  to  integrate  two  web  2.0  technologies  into  weekly  lessons  to  encourage  collaboration  and  communication  between  students.  ShowMe  &  Educreations  on  the  iPad

Mac  Laptop  Series  

I’ve  Got  My  Mac…Now  What?  (Beginning  users)  Presenters:  Matt  Lafferty

Description:  This  workshop  will  cover  how  to  maximize  the  experience  of  your  new  Mac.  We  will  practice  ways  to  click,  saving  options,  cleaning  up  your  desktop,  finding  lost  files,  defining  all  the  ports  on  the  side  of  your  machine,  and  how  best  to  charge  the  battery.  There  will  also  be  plenty  of  time  for  Q&A.

What  Can  Mac  Do  For  You?  (Intermediate  users)  Presenters:  Matt  Lafferty

Dates/Times:  2/25  @3:00

Description:  This  presentation  will  cover  some  of  the  Mac  tools  that  can  allow  teachers  and  students  alike  the  chance  to  unleash  their  creativity:  iMovie  (creating  previews  and  movies),  GarageBand  (recording  music  and  spoken  podcasts),  iBooks  Author  (writing  books  for  iPad  and  uploading  to  iTunes).  Also  covered:  maximizing  iCloud  across  your  Mac,  PC,  iPhone  and  iPad;  and  using  AirPlay  to  connect  to  projectors.  After  the  presentation  there  will  be  a  Q&A  concerning  applying  these  concepts  to  the  classroom.

PerformancePLUS  and  SGOs  –  Using  Data  to  See  the  Growth  in  Your  Classroom

Description:  So  you’ve  given  some  assessments  and  logged  your  data  in  PerformancePLUS.  Now  what?!    This  workshop  will  cover  all  you  need  to  finish  this  school  year  and  begin  planning  for  next.    Topics  include:  

1. How  to  properly  administer  assessments  and  enter  data  into  PerformancePLUS.      2. How  to  extract  pre-­‐assessment  data  from  PerformancePLUS.  3. Examples  of  SGO’s  that  can  be  written  from  pre-­‐assessment  data.  4. How  to  extract  post-­‐assessment  data  and  evaluate  your  SGO.
