What inspires you? What makes you want to get up each day and go to work? What are you good at and how do

you know?I wonder how many of us ask ourselves these questions and spend long enough reflecting on the answers.

Often in the Army we go from one job to another either because we’re posted and told to, or because it suits where we want to be, our families or, if we’re lucky enough, we’re sent to a job because it will enable us to really use our skills and talents.

We should be thinking about our future career throughout our current one. We should be assessing our talents, working out what we do well, what we could do better, what inspires us and makes us happy. And as we do that we should be developing our skills, knowledge and confidence so that when that second career beckons we are ready to make the leap; we are qualified, skilled and confident about the next chapter.

There is no better time to develop your skills and confidence than now. Don’t put off that course until later. Don’t wait until you’ve decided to leave or come to the end of your career. If you start to develop your skills and talents early you will reap the rewards sooner, gain more confidence and land the job that inspires you and makes the most of what you have to offer, rather than one that just pays the bills. Speak to your PD Advisor, Learning Centre Manager or our Larkhill team and start your inspirational journey today.

Digital project

Here at the RACPD, we are committed to continuous improvement, whether that be in our programmes or how we deliver them. Something we’ve been working a lot on this year is our digital project. As well as updating our own technology, and that in our Learning Centres, we’ve also been looking at how we can best use it to deliver our courses and benefit our learners. Below are two ways in which we’ve done just that!

www.racpd.org.uk

On our website you’ll find lots of information, including our full course list, latest course dates, Learning Centre locations and information and much more. You can now search for your chosen course three ways; by date, by subject and by what’s available to you. So whether you’re a member of the Royal Artillery, other Service personnel or the wider Defence community, take a look at the opportunities available and if you’re not sure what course is right for you, then just give a member of our team a call on 01980 845 789.

VLE

We’ve now launched our new look VLE. This online learning resource means you can learn anywhere, anytime and on any platform. Not all of our courses are online courses but with new legislation around course delivery and the growing commitments of our learners, it’s something we’re working into all our programmes. Through our VLE you can complete your portfolio, take a quiz, access resources and keep up-to-date with all your course dates through the personalised course list and calendar. There’s a link to it through our main website or go straight to www.racpdvle.org.uk.

military Learning CreditsUSE IT OR LOSE IT Learning Credits are a financial contribution by MOD towards studies/courses taken by Service personnel. There are two main types; Standard Learning Credits (SLC) and Enhanced Learning Credits (ELC). You don’t have to use them just in resettlement, there are courses that might be useful for your current role as well. You can use them whilst you’re serving or ELC can be used after leaving, but you may find it harder to do this once you’re in a civilian job. That’s why it’s important to know what you’re entitled to and how you can go about using it - because you don’t want to miss out or leave it until it’s too late.

ABOUT STANDARD LEARNING CREDITS (SLC) SLC is a refund scheme. Payments are made after the completion of learning; and you must provide proof of learning. With SLC you can claim 80% of your fees and/or up to a maximum of £175 each year, towards certain personal development courses, exams and support. There is an annual allowance which runs from 1 April to 31 March. The allowance can’t be carried forward nor used for courses taken in the previous year so it’s important you don’t let them go to waste. To apply to use your SLC, you must complete an application form (MOD Form 1950) before starting a course. This form must be signed by your line manager and education staff.

ABOUT ENHANCED LEARNING CREDITS (ELC) The ELC scheme offers you funding for longer or higher level learning courses. ELC awards are available in two ‘tiers’: the ‘lower tier’ level of up to £1000 per annum if you have four or more years’ eligible service and the ‘upper tier’ level of up to £2000 if you have eight or more years’ eligible service. Providing you meet all the criteria, you can claim 3 times (as long as they are in separate financial years.) You can use ELC for up to 10 years from your last day of service. You can use one claim for multiple courses, as long as they are linked by a single career goal or industry, and are with the same provider.

All of our course information will tell you the initial cost of the course, eligibility and the reduced cost should you use your Learning Credits. It can make a big difference so don’t let your Learning Credits go to waste!

For more information visit our website or contact your local Military Education/Learning Centre. You can also visit www.enhancedlearningcredits.com for information on ELC.

Interested in a civilian qualification which recognises the management

and leadership skills you have gained over your military career?

For bookings and enquiries call Kerri Doherty on 01980 845942/94322 5942 or speak to your local RACPD PD Advisor (details on our website)

Our Leadership & Management qualifications do just that. They endorse the extensive skills you have gained and they also cover topics such as budgets, finance and marketing, all of which are highly regarded, if not essential in a civilian job role. We currently run two courses:

BTEC Diploma Level 5 in Management and Leadership• Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership•

Both are eligible for Standard Learning Credits.

Compliance Training Instructor (CTI)It looks great on the CV, licenses you to teach 15 qualifications and enables you to set up your own company or teach on behalf of a training organisation, but what is CTI all about and what difference can it make to you? Jason Janes from 47 Regt RA, tells us his story.

WhY DID YOU ChOOSE ThE CTI COURSE?

I was really interested in the teaching element of the course and the fact that it qualifies you as an instructor. I’d already completed a teaching course with RACPD and it was definitely something I wanted to pursue. I was also interested in the topics it qualifies you to teach. I’d come across such things as Health & Safety before through my military role and even if I didn’t go on to use them in a specific CTI job, I’d knew they’d be a good bolt on for other careers, and something that would be very attractive to future employers.

WhAT WAS ThE COURSE LIKE?

The course was what I expected and a definite bonus was that our tutor was ex-military. The tutor was able to connect with the class and had a better understanding of the jobs we do now. There was a range of ranks in the class but everyone was in civilian clothing and it was all very relaxed.

I used my ELC to help cover the cost of the course, and included with the course was an instructor’s pack with all the lessons and an electronic tablet. Each disc with the lessons on is worth £170, so it was well worth me doing it this way.

hOW USEFUL hAS ThE QUALIFICATION BEEN?

Since doing the course I’ve started the process of setting myself up as an independent Learning Centre, delivering the Compliance Training, and I’m just waiting to hear back now. I’m still in the military so it’s not something I’m going to use tomorrow, but it’s good to know I’m ready when the time comes to leave and that I’ve got these 15 qualifications, that are useful now and in the future.

WhAT WOULD YOU SAY TO ANYONE WhO’S INTERESTED IN TAKING ThE COURSE?

It’s a really useful qualification with a lot of opportunities. You can go on to become a freelance CTI or work for a training provider. If like me you’re still serving, you’ll also find it beneficial to your current role. My biggest tip would be to make sure you use your learning credits and do these courses whilst you’re still in the military. Don’t leave it until after.
