4.1.8 Bachelor ofScience (DoubleMajors)

Restoration of the language that requires that astudent be in honours standing in at least one of thetwo subjects, and obtains the permission of bothProgram Chairs in order to undertake a doublemajor. A student who fails to maintain an 8.0average in at least one area will still be granted thedouble major, provided all other requirements aremet, but will not receive the degree with honours.

2B

Biological Sciences Language included to distinguish the criteria forreceiving a B.Sc. Honours Biological Sciences, anda B.Sc. Honours Biological Sciences, with thesis.

2B

Biological Sciences Minor changes to the list of required courses in thepsychology portion of the double major inBiological Sciences and Psychology

2B

Earth Sciencesinserted beforeEconomics; reflectsmerger of PhysicalGeography andGeology

Geography (Physical) and Geology are nowmerged as Earth Sciences. Curricular changes forEarth Sciences have been submitted separately asa Form 1 (Major Program Changes), andconsidered by PDC elsewhere. These includemerger of faculty listings from both areas andchanges to program requirements to accommodateprofessional accreditation in EnvironmentalGeoscience and Geology.

Rationale:

// Degree Requirements: Name of Degree: B.Sc. General Science, Science, technology andSocietyDescribe Changes:

1) A third stream (Mathematics) has been explicitly added to the two (Life Sciences, Physical Sciences)that existed before. This has allowed simplification of the calendar entry and degree requirements.2) Information about standing for continuation was deleted as it repeats criteria stated elsewhere.3) Recommended course sequences were deleted as they are handled through academic counselling. Rationale: Makes explicit the possibility of taking mathematics as a “first teachable” (for students who planto go on to the faculty of Education). It was available before as a variant on the “Physical Sciences” option, but this clarifies the opportunity.

NEW: ________________________________________________ New Certificate (give details):

Rationale:

// Degree Requirements: Name of Degree: Concurrent B.Sc. General Science degree/ MedicalLaboratory Science Diploma

Describe Changes: 1) Discussion with the representatives of the St. Clair College Diploma Program has clarified the fact that wecan allow more choices for students in the B.Sc. portion of their course selection. Asterisks have beenadded to the list of recommended courses to indicate where substitutions can be made (14 out of 26),provided the substitutes fit the category for a regular general science degree audit.

2) Delete “and one other University Science Option” because these students will have already fulfilled therequirement to have 4 science credits at the 300 level or above.

Rationale: Students in the concurrent B.Sc. MLS program were unnecessarily fettered in their courseselection, this was both limiting their educational experience, and was making it difficult for them tocomplete program requirements on time.

NEW: ________________________________________________ New Certificate (give details):

Rationale:

// Degree Requirements: Name of Degree: 4.1.8 Bachelor of Science (Double Majors)

Describe Changes: Insert language that states:To register for a double major, a student must have an average of 8.0 or higher in one of the two areas. Theagreement of the Heads or Program Chairs of both areas is required for admission. If a student fails tomaintain a GPA of 8.0 or above in one or both areas, he or she will be awarded the double major, but withouthonours.

Rationale: In previous calendars there was explicit language that limited double majors to students whowere in honours standing. With recent confusion over the honours issue, the registrar was not using thatfilter in approving admission to double majors. However admission to required honours thesis courses waslimited to students who had a GPA of 8.0, so the restriction was, in fact, still there. The faculty of Sciencewishes to be clear on the guideline of limiting double majors to students who are in honours standing in atleast one of the areas (i.e. GPA of 8.0 or above). Students who are admitted to a double major but fail tomaintain the required GPA in at least one area would be given the double degree, but without honours (forexample, B.Sc. Biology and Psychology). The intent is to ensure students who are admitted are capable ofsustaining the extra demands placed on a double major; students who are less able would be counselled totake a single major, with a minor in the second area.

Program: BIOLOGICAL SCIENCES

Corrected Calendar proofs must accompany program changes.

Please check (TT) where appropriate.

Proposed action: restoration and clarification of “honours language”

// Degree Requirements: Name of Degree: Biological Sciences Honours ProgramDescribe Changes:

The following wording has been added to indicate the criteria for receiving an honours degree:

Honours Biological SciencesStudents graduating in the 40 credit program with a major GPA of 8.0 or above will receive a B.Sc. HonoursBiological Sciences. Students whose major GPA is below 8.0 will receive a B.Sc. Biological Sciences.

Honours Biological Sciences with thesisStudents graduating in the 40 credit program with a major GPA of 8.0 who also complete an honours thesiswill receive a B.Sc. Honours Biological Sciences with thesis. Ordinarily, students must be in honoursstanding (GPA of 8.0 or above) in order to undertake an honours thesis (55-420). Students in double majorsmay carry out their thesis in either area. The area in which the thesis is completed will be listed first in thediploma.

Rationale: Following the Senate vote to restore the Honours degrees, all 40 credit degrees in science arehonours programs; students who earn honours through having a major GPA of 8.0 or above will receive anhonours degree; those who do not achieve the necessary 8.0 average will receive a major degree withouthonours. When an honours thesis is completed this will be indicated by the addition of “with thesis” to thediploma.

FORM 2 B (pg1) MINOR PROGRAM CHANGES

FORM 2 B(PDC Submission Deadline: December 1)

FACULTY: SCIENCE AAU: Computer Science

Program: Bachelor of Computer Science

Corrected Calendar proofs must accompany program changes.

Please check (TT) where appropriate.

Proposed action: New Minor in “Applied Information Technology”.

Six courses chosen from: 60-100, 60-104, 60-140, 60-205, 60-206, 60-275 (or 60-270), & 60-375 (or60-302).

The School of Computer Science currently offers a Minor in Computer Science (minor in CS) consisting of 6 CS courses. There are three problems with this Minor resulting from the fact that 4 or the courses are core CS courses:

1. A large number of students from across campus take one or more of the CS courses which can be used towardsthe Minor in CS. Many of these students hope to be able to complete the minor but cannot enrol in all requiredcourses owing to lack of spaces.

2. “Sharing” core CS courses with non-CS students trying to complete a Minor in CS creates huge difficulties intrying to predict and satisfy student demand.

3. The four core CS courses which are included in the Minor in CS are primarily concerned with programming and arereally not well suited to the needs of most students taking the Minor.

In order to solve this problem, the School has recommended that a new Minor be created which better suites the needs ofthe majority of students wanting to obtain a formal qualification in computing. This minor consists of 6 courses, only two of which are core CS courses. The Minor in CS will continue to be offered for those students who want aMinor which is primarily related to programming. The new proposed minor is more concerned with applications ofcomputers.

All of the courses in the Minor in Applied IT, except 60-100 and 60-140, are taught by sessional instructors. As morecourses are identified to be included, the two core CS courses 60-140 and 60-100 will be phased out.

Resource Implications: The changes require no new resources/budgets

or T The changes have the following resource/budget implications (attach budget and narrative):

A Service Course Co-ordinator has already been hired to manage the existing Minor in CS which has approximately 4,000SEUs per year. This coordinator will also manage the new Minor in Applied Information Technology.

Course places will be determined by resources that are made available by the administration. There will be nocommitment to provide the courses unless the administration decides to do so, perhaps as a means of attracting studentsto the university.
