Twenty years of missing memorabilia seemed to be a bit of a mystery. In preparing for the 50th anniversary celebration, the last piece of information that I found was a collage of photos from our

1990’s:A Changing Societyby Bob Gonia, 50th Anniversary Coordinator

associations’ 30th birthday party. I turned to Frank Proulx, former PDCCA Association Manager, to help solve the mystery of what went on in our community during the past twenty years.

The 1990’s were trying times. While inflation was a national concern, housing prices continued to increase and stay-at-home moms were a thing of the past. A large number of original homeowners in our com-munity either passed on or were moving elsewhere. Since most of our community’s clubs and activities centered on a retirement lifestyle and met during the day, most clubs ceased to exist by 1995, leaving the whole north wing of our association hall vacant.

1995 proved to be a very busy year. One of the most pressing issues the PDCCA Board of Directors faced was leasing out the empty wing of the association hall. The Montessori School rented the building, left in 2003, returned in 2005 and has been a stable tenant since. Joe Mann, former PDDCA Board President, led the campaign to have our community annexed from Riverside County into the city, which became finalized in 1994. With the recent annexation, the 1995 association board faced a challenge with street resurfacing. Apparently there was great dis-cussion as to whether the county or city was responsible for this project.

The entrance to our community on Avenue of the States originally boasted a rock wall entrance with a water fountain, while flags of each state lined the street. The fountain fell into disrepair, and thanks to Joe Mann and ‘area 26’ funds (traffic control assessment funds), the fountain was torn down in 1995 and replaced with the obelisk as described in my October 2010 newsletter article.

Also in 1995, the once popular blue indoor/outdoor carpet on the pool deck became a thing of the past and was removed. Crown Castle ap-proached the association about renting land for their cell tower. Crown Castle approached the association again in 2010 in order to upgrade their equipment.

Marilynn Hamlet was our association’s board president from 1996-2002. Sometime around early 1999 the city approached Marilynn about renting land for a park. Board of Director Charlie Ash promoted naming the park after Joe Mann. PDCCA owns the Rose Garden and park land while the city leases and maintains the grounds. Marilynn also lobbied for changing the traffic pattern on Kansas Street. The bandstand on our hall patio was removed and replaced with the current seating area in her honor.

At least two major improvements have been made as a result of Project Area 4. Tamarisk trees were removed along Hovley Lane and replaced with the block wall that lines the back of the apartments in 2001. The block wall on Fred Waring Dr. was built in 2007.

With all of these changes, our community still had a lot of fun. 1990 be-gan with a fun-filled New Year’s Eve party. The Garden Club was active until sometime in the 1990’s. In 1992, the Women’s Club held craft fairs, had a fashion show with 192 ladies in attendance, had luncheons and even managed to raise $4,000 for nursing scholarships. The Boy Scouts built the small retaining wall by the north driveway of the association hall in 2003. The scouts continue to assist with our events whenever needed. The Bridge Club was one of the first clubs in the community and contin-ues to meet to this day, which means they have been meeting now for 2,600 weeks straight!

Even though we had twenty years of missing memorabilia, our community was in an era of change. Our association and Board of Directors worked hard at making the many improvements that we would not otherwise be en-joying today while we as a community continued our legacy of having fun.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my stories over the past year reliving our com-munity’s early years. I’ve enjoyed talking to each of you and hearing your stories. I’ve touched on only a few of the many stories that have made our community what it is today... ‘a desert paradise, an oasis by itself’.

Next month’s newsletter will be our commemorative 50th anniversary cel-ebration edition which will feature a look back at the history of our commu-nity. Please plan on joining us on February 26th from 10am-2pm in Alice Marble Hall as we celebrate our community’s 50th anniversary!

It’s all about “time”. Tempus fugit (time flies); time: is money; will tell; works wonders; is a great healer; and tide wait for no man; no time like the present; do not squander time for that is the stuff life is made of; and that lovely song, “As Time Goes By”.

All this mention of time is just a gentle reminder of the 50th Anniversary celebration of Palm Desert Country Club Association on February 26. If you haven’t made your reservation, THE TIME IS NOW! Many people have been working hard to bring this about and it promises to be a really fun time.

Do you remember the Saturday Night Dance Club? One Saturday a month a group of us gathered at the association to dance to the tunes of a live band. Remember Bill Veazie with his slide trombone? And al-most every time someone would request a song by Eve Kane, who had sung professionally many years ago. We had a committee to handle the acquisition of the bands if the regular one wasn’t available, and couples took turns hosting, providing appetizers and ice for those of us who b.y.o.b.(brought our own bottles). What a great time we all had.

No matter where they had been, Ky and Eve Kane attended every ses-sion, Eve continuing on her own after Ky’s demise. She was awarded a life-time membership by the group after Ky’s death.

While shopping at Albertson’s one day I ran into Chuck DeWilde. We had a nice chat until the chicken I had purchased leaked its juices all over the floor. It’s always good news to hear when two people who have been left alone by the death of their spouses find comfort and company in each other. So it is with him and Joyce Oldenburg. Be happy, you two.

Alice Hurd, who has been having heart problems of late, has decided to make a move to San Diego to live in an assisted living place near where her children live. She’s saying this is a temporary move - if she doesn’t like it, back she’ll come.

Alice Norman was having difficulty breathing so spent a few days in Eisenhower Hospital and has been transferred to Morningstar Nursing Home, which is near the hospital. This is a private place with only a few patients in it. Their sons have been here to give them both a little support.

It’s sad to hear that Dick Landis lost his son, Howard Landis, on Dec. 3, 2010, having fought the battle with cancer for about two years. Howard was retired from Sierra Pacific Power in Carson City. He is survived by two sons and one granddaughter, with another on the way. (That makes Dick a Great grandfather - he says he and Betty have 13 or 14 great grandchildren between them.) Condolences to Dick and his family.

FROM THE EDITOR’S LAPTOPHappy Anniversary Palm Desert Country Club Association !!! When Bob Gonia, our Board Director and 50th Anniversary coordinator began his planning 18 months ago, this February 26, 2011 date seemed a remote time frame. Now here we are, anxiously awaiting our special Open House celebra-tion. Bob has done an outstanding job, coordinating food, music, memory album, speeches and an absolutely fabulous historical video presentation, which will be viewable throughout the event. Our list

of speakers is growing, so check the website (www.pdcca.com) later in February to see the list and times that speakers will be present. We are blessed that many of the people from the City and County, who were a part of our 50 year growth, will be here to speak about their connection to our Association. Sherman’s Deli is preparing a bountiful spread, so be sure to bring your appetites with you. And there are wonderful take-away gifts that every celebration attendee will receive; there is a hint about one of the gifts-historical is the word. All of the PDCCA Board of Directors and staff look forward to seeing you on Saturday, February 26th, 10am to 2 pm.

Be sure to watch for our March newsletter, it will be a commemorative edition of our 50th Anniversary. Extra copies will be available at the office, so you can share them with your family and friends.

Lastly, when we goof, we do it big time. Front page-January edition-February was misspelled. The old expression holds true—haste makes waste. Thanks for your understanding.

Thanks for supporting our advertisers. See you next month.

Life Is To Be Played!-Fred Stock

Recent medical events have brought us to the point of facing the realities of “getting old”, as they say. As we consider our own lifetime, and those of the folks around us, we naturally come to the fact that there are periods of our lives, perhaps great percentages thereof, where there was little or no fun in an average day. “They say” that no one in their last moments can be heard saying, “I wish I had spent more time at work, away from home, further from my family.” We realize that play time is exceptionally important in our long range pic-ture. For the record, the old-guy says “Life is indeed to be played.”

Consider the people who actually go from rags to riches in our world. It is those who play… for a living, usually! They are football players, baseball players, tennis players, golfers. They are the folks who play the markets, literally. They are also musicians and performers who play the entertainment gigs we pay hard-earned money to watch. They play guitars and keyboards. They play parts in Broadway Plays or motion picture productions. They are those who analysts describe as “players” in whatever field they are observing. They play their parts in anything they are doing… choirs or orchestras, business hierarchies, family softball games. They excel because they actually enjoy the playing of the game, however defined.

It is always simple to dive into the day’s work at a job or task. It means our focus can become intense to the point of distraction. We certainly have memories of occasions we have come home frustrated, tired, instead of satisfied that we had done a good job. It transmutes into snarling at the spouse and the kids, growling at the neighbor’s dog, collapsing into the chair – itself meant for relaxation – and withdraw-ing into a snoring mass of gripes and grumbles! (ah… except you and me, right?)

Finally, after seven decades of chaos, it has come to our attention that life is to be played. We laugh and tease with our customers both in person and on the telephone. The internet dot-com doesn’t leave as much space for “silly” as does the in-person dealings, but there are places to interject humor and grins, if we decide to see them when they pop up. We put a little sign up over our desk which car-

ries the key phrase. We have it in our wallet and in our brain, finally! Life IS to be played. It is not only to be striven, efforted, worked or drudged. Yes, there are proper places for each of these, but certainly, they can be interleaved with fun, contests with ourselves, the lighter side of every task. When we are most exhausted, worn out, sick and tired, there is almost NEVER an occasion where in playing has been involved. Look back, you’ll see it! No one works harder than a profes-sional football player. He practices things with his body that would do in a lesser man, but he continues with the team because, come game time, he can play. He plays as well as he works, as hard as he works, and as a result he is likely compensated well. True in many if not all walks of life. The players at their trade have made it big, or could have if they had focused more intently. Walt Disney, John F. Kennedy, Yogi Berra, we could list dozens. They knew the value of playing as well as hard work. They knew “Life Is To Be Played.”

“Hey, old guy, why don’t you just say what you mean?” OK! Life IS to be Played. “Oh, good, I wondered when you’d get to the point.” Yah, me too! -fhs

WORLD CRUISE

2010 (Continued)

After safely sailing the Indian Ocean the Amsterdam docked in Mumbai, India, where the damaged exclusive hotel from the terrorist attack had been repaired and operational again. Further south along the Indian coast was the port city of Goa. A bus provided transportation to the city. I took a tour of the basilicas and saw the preserved body of St. Francis Xavier. Dating from the 1500’s, much gold was used and frescos were covered with white paint to preserve them from the extreme heat and humidity. At the bustling market place women sat on piles of fresh vegetables, fruits and spices for sale. This was water buffalo and tiger country. Armed guards boarded our bus to check our passports enroute back to the ship. Koala, Lumpur, Malaysia, is a third world country that aspires through edu-cation to be a first world country by 2020. Interestingly, all who are born in Malaysia are automatically Muslim.

I was in the Crow’s Nest at 6 AM when we arrived in Singapore in order to enjoy Merlion rolls as advertised in the daily bulletin. At the harbor entrance is a sculpture of the head of a lion and a body of a fish - thus the special rolls which are a sweet dough with a half apricot baked inside. Alongside the ship was the largest, most elaborate, expensive shopping center I have ever seen. The only rainy day in a port for the entire cruise, this ultra modern city still was immaculately clean and beautiful. Sihanoukville, Cambodia, is a cargo port. Our tour began with a trip to the poorest fishing village. Piles of unrefrigerated fish were for sale alongside heavily dust covered items hanging from makeshift shade tents which were located by the narrow dirt road. In sharp contrast was the Buddhist monas-tery housing massive amounts of gold statues and other magnificent works of art. The guide expressed the opinion that many of the monks chose this way of life to avoid the extreme poverty that is prevalent throughout most of the region. The country is 95% Buddhist.

Halong Bay, Vietnam, is a UNESCO site where we toured aboard carved wooden junks upon which the owners lived and made a living. As we slowly floated around some of the largest and most unusual seastacks imaginable, a family with a baby and a toddler (none wearing life jackets) would come alongside selling fresh fruits and vegetables. The toddler walked all over the vessel with what appeared to be no one having any concern for her falling in the water. Hong Kong - The smog was so thick early in the morning that the city was not visible even after the ship docked. We travelers found no bargains here. All passengers were screened for SARS - even the bodies in the morgue aboard ship were checked.

Shanghai was preparing to make an impression with the World Expo at this time and the beautiful city was breathtaking with its formal gardens and modern accomodations.

Xingang, China - here the authorities had us wait in a cold barnlike structure for an inordinate amount of time, standing, until everyone cleared the ship. (This was also about the time President Obama was negotiating with China regarding the value of the Yuen.) Some folks arrived in shorts straight from the gym expecting a five minute procedure as usual. Finally, the captain interceded and we were allowed into an area with chairs to continue waiting. The authorities who were processing us seemed unfamiliar with the use of the computer. “All’s well that ends well” - the Captain ordered champagne for all at dinner that evening.

Cheju City, South Korea - In this city we were greeted by some high school girls in uniform who wanted to practice their English with us. They willingly answered all questions we had. Japan - Kagoshima, Kobe, Yokohama, Hakodate. Every place was super clean, bus seats and toilet seats were heated and bathrooms looked like space ships with so many buttons to push. It was the beginning of cherry blossom time although we had spells of snow and rain. Everything was expensive. Pre school children wore uniforms. Amazingly, the authorities could check health as well as every thing else needed to go ashore while we walked through the door. This was in sharp contrast to our Chinese experience. Next will be the final days aboard the Amsterdam.
