ATTRACTIONSA 7 D CORSAIR FIGHTERArthur N. Neu Airport, four miles east, one mile south of CarrollThe A 7 D Corsair Fighter was one of the main fighters used in the Vietnam War. This plane was donated by the Iowa National Guard and dedicated to the Carroll County men and women who served or died in the Vietnam War. The plane was built for land and aircraft carrier use with maximum speed of 698 mph.

ARTS AND ANTIQUITIES TOUR – MANNINGTour is a self-guided tour of nineteen locations in Manning that offer a small glimpse into arts, culture, and antiques in Manning. Drive, walk, or bike to the different stops. Route lengths range from half a mile to nearly six miles. www.manningia.com

BREDA MEMORIAL PARK (BASEBALL STADIUM)The wonderful former home stadium of the Breda Eagles, semi-pro team of the 1940’s and the 1975 St. Bernard High School State Baseball Champions, features one of the few remaining wooden covered grandstands in the Midwest. Built in 1947 (totally restored in 2001) for $15,000, it was described as “one of the best baseball parks in the state “with grandstand seating 600 and “lighting facilities equal to any in Iowa.” Stop anytime for a step back in time. CARROLL COUNTY FREEDOM ROCKLocated at Willow Creek Campsite along Hwy 141 East of Manning. Ray “Bubba” Sorensen painted the Carroll County Freedom Rock in June, 2014 as part of his 99-county Iowa Freedom Rock Tour. The rock features the Milwaukee railroad trestle, noting that during World War II, troop trains used these tracks.

CARROLL COUNTY HISTORICAL MUSEUMHwy 30 & Court St, CarrollThe museum is housed in the former Carnegie Library building. Artifacts represent Carroll County History from the late 1800s to the present. Other attractions include a schoolhouse and log cabin located in Graham Park, the Farmstead Barn located at Swan Lake State Park and the 1915 Model C Heider Tractor. CARROLLTON HERITAGE PARKThe former site of the Carrollton Store is now a serene roadside park with a picnic table and benches. It has a map of Carrollton the way the town appeared at different dates of history by color coding. Big and Little Blue Stem native grasses and Burr Oak trees that were native to Iowa are in the park. Other areas of interest include the Carrollton Cemetery which was the first cemetery of the county. It was established in 1854. Many pioneer families and Civil War Veterans are buried here. A memorial information sign helps with geneology searches. It is located approximately 2½ miles south of the Park. The former Carrollton School site is under construction for a bell tower. It is located a quarter mile east of the Park. County signs mark the areas.

CHICAGO & NORTHWESTERN RAILROAD DEPOT & PARK407 W 5th St, CarrollThe unique 1896 Chicago & Northwestern Railroad depot and American Express & baggage buildings designed by Charles Sumner Frost in his classic, Victorian Romanesque style have been totally renovated. The depot buildings and adjacent, historic, railroad park have returned to their place as a community green space and meeting area. It now houses the Carroll Chamber of Commerce.

CNWRR DEPOTBredaThe Chicago Northwestern Railroad Depot was built in 1905. The building has been restored to its original condition and has been furnished with some of the original furnishings along with memorabilia of the CNWRR.

FORGOTTEN CORNER MUSEUMOne half mile south of Manning school, east edge of ManningMuseum contains numerous antique household, farming & miscellaneous items. Also included in the museum are a 1963 fire truck and a large toy display with hundreds of tractors and farm machinery. Call for appointment (712) 653-3029.

GERMAN HAUSBARN / HERITAGE PARK / TRINITY CHURCHHwy 141, ½ mile east of ManningTravel through time to experience Manning’s authentic German Hausbarn, built in 1660 in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany and reconstructed in 1999. View museum-quality architecture and displays of the thatched-roof barn where farm animals shared living quarters with the family. Also experience the 1915 era Leet-Hassler Farmstead, restored to its original state with all the furnishings of the period. The 92-year-old Trinity Lutheran Church was originally located nine miles southeast of Manning in Lincoln Township. The congregation was organized in 1881 by immigrants from northern Germany. When the church closed in 2006, the structure was transported to the Hausbarn-Heritage Park where it is being preserved. The historic church is available for non-denominational Christian events and open to the public for touring. The Heritage Park is open May 1 - October 31, Mon. - Sat. 10 am - 4 pm and Sun. 1 - 4 pm. LAKERS BASKETBALL COURT AND HISTORICAL MARKERVeterans Memorial Park – Corner of Forest & 22nd St, CarrollA January blizzard in 1960 resulted in an emergency DC-3 airplane landing of the professional basketball team, Minneapolis Lakers (today’s LA Lakers), including NBA great, Elgin Baylor. A former Marine pilot successfully landed the converted World War II cargo airplane in a frozen cornfield just a few yards from the marker sign in the park and next to today’s Laker Court, a basketball court in Lakers colors built in 2010 and donated by the Los Angeles Lakers franchise. The marker contains a photo and description of the event. A bronze plaque is located next to Laker Court and thanks the Lakers for sponsoring the court on the historic event’s 50th anniversary.

LINCOLN HIGHWAY MILE MARKERSIn 1928 the Lincoln Highway Association with the help of Boy Scouts across the U.S. placed concrete markers approximately every mile along the Lincoln Highway. As you drive through Carroll County, there are several spots with the original Lincoln Highway Mile Markers. Locations

are: Carroll County Historical Museum, and a farm east of Glidden. Lincoln Highway route through Carroll is marked with LH street markers.

MANNING RAILROAD TRESTLENorth of ManningRailroad trestle bridge built in 1913-14 by the Chicago Milwaukee Railroad and is still in use today. Originally double-tracked, it crossed over the Nishnabotna River and two other railroad lines.

MERCHANTS PARK (CARROLL BASEBALL STADIUM)T h e h i s t o r i c 1 9 4 9 Merchants Park built for Carroll’s semi-pro team (Merchants) is a unique site for some of the finest high school, college & semi pro baseball in Iowa. MERLE HAY GRAVE AND MEMORIALMerle Hay Memorial Cemetery, ½ mile west of GliddenThis historical site is a memorial to Merle Hay. He was the first Iowan, and one of the first U.S. soldiers, killed in World War I. The memorial is an open roadside memorial on US Hwy 30. Merle Hay is buried at the Merle Hay Memorial cemetery.

MERLYN IRLBECK ANNUAL CHRISTMAS LIGHT DISPLAY ½ mile south of the German Hausbarn, Manning

This popular attraction is located at the Forgotten Corners Museum on the east edge of Manning. This is also Merlyn’s residence. The display has over 40,000 lights with many different lighted items including a train that is over 200 feet long. The display is lit weekends in December and the last week of December through New Year’s Day. (712) 653-3029

MISSOURI-MISSISSIPPI DRAINAGE DIVIDEHwy 30, one mile east of ArcadiaRoadside attraction. From this point east all water runs to the Mississippi River and from this point west all water runs to the Missouri River. Elevation 1,429 feet.

RIVERSIDE PARKNortheast corner of Coon Rapids144 acre park with camping, hiking and wildlife viewing. Riverside Campground is a small camping area located on the east edge of Coon Rapids on Walnut Avenue. Twelve electric sites are available for RV camping. There is room for tent camping as well as a new shower house available for campers to use. A 2.5-mile paved hiking/biking trail adjacent to the Middle Raccoon River features a 100 ft. suspension bridge and is easily accessible from the campground. SAUK RAIL TRAILThe Sauk Rail Trail is a 33 mile long multi-use recreational trail. From Swan Lake State Park to Black Hawk State Park. Both state parks have lakes and camping facilities. There are several rest stops along the way, benches, shelters, bars, and restaurants. The trail surface is concrete from Lake View to Maple River and asphalt from Maple River to Swan Lake in Carroll. It is an excellent place for biking, walking, jogging and in-line skating and is open for snowmobiling and cross-county skiing during the winter, and portions of the trail are open for hunting during the appropriate seasons. User fees are required for those ages 18 and up, $2.00/day or $15.00/year; trail passes can be found at the Carroll County Conservation Board, Sac County Conservation Board and trailheads, there are several of those along the way which have a yellow post with a yellow box on top for trail passes. SAVING OUR AVIAN RESOURCESSOAR is a wildlife rehabilitation and education organization based in Carroll County. SOAR’s patients are mostly raptors (hawks, owls, eagles, falcons, and vultures). Two non-releasable bald eagles reside at Swan Lake State Park in an eagle enclosure and can be viewed during park open hours. WAR MEMORIAL MONUMENTSEast First Street South of Grant Road, CarrollThe War Memorial Monuments in Carroll’s Cemetery are a memorial to all soldiers. There is a monument for each war beginning with the Civil War and the latest monument for Desert Storm. It is one of the few monuments for Desert Storm in the state of Iowa.

WARREN PONY BRIDGE VETERANS MEMORIAL PARKCorner of Forest & 22nd St, CarrollThe 90 year old Warren pony or low-truss bridge is listed in the National Register of Historic Places. The bridge was adopted by the Iowa State Highway Commission (later IDOT) as a prototype for similar bridges in all of Iowa’s 99 counties. The bridge was moved to the park by the County from its original location south of the Carroll Airport.

Carroll County, located in west-central Iowa, is working hard to diversify, strengthen and develop its economy. Carroll County ranks among the highest livestock producing counties in Iowa and the nation. Manufacturing employment totals over 2,000.

Carroll is the regional business center for west-central Iowa. It is located at the junction of U.S. Highways 30 and 71 and is served by the Union Pacific Railroad. Des Moines Area Community College has a campus located in Carroll which plays an important part in economic development efforts. St. Anthony Regional Hospital’s continued expanded services highlight Carroll’s position as a regional medical center.
