Start the New Year Right!
2008
Dear Colleague,
The New Year signifies a beginning for most people. New Year’s resolutions are made (and often broken). Piano teachers and piano students are no different. The first lesson of the New Year offers a chance to revitalize lessons, choose new repertoire or start projects that will motivate students in their piano study. We hope the ideas and music featured in this brochure will simplify your planning for 2008.
Start an AAA ClubIn her book, Practical Piano Pedagogy, Martha Baker-Jordan suggests that teachers form an AAA Club. AAA stands for music a student can play Anytime, Anywhere, for Anybody. The objective is to have pieces ready to play at all times for parents, friends, guests in the home, school events or religious services. The procedures of the club are simple, but the rewards are great. Baker-Jordan describes this club and other studio ideas in Chapter 19, M. O. (Method of Operation) for Motivation.
Use Duets to Capture InterestIn our studio, my wife and I always reserved our performance class at the end of February for piano duets. At the first lesson of the New Year, students received their duet and began working on it in both private and group lessons. The duet performance class proved to be extremely popular with parents. Whether you are looking for duets of popular music (see pages 18 and 19), or original duets by such composers as Melody Bober, Robert D. Vandall, Catherine Rollin, Joyce Grill and others (see pages 16 and 17), you will find the right piece for students at all levels in this brochure.
Plan Ahead for the Spring RecitalNow is the ideal time to find the perfect piece that will let each student “shine” on your spring recital. You can play samples of Alfred’s newest recital selections of solos and suites on pages 10–15. The right solo will provide enough artistic challenges and emotional satisfaction to sustain the student’s interest, while encouraging musical growth during the weeks prior to the recital. More experienced students may thrive on the additional concentration and practice needed to perform a multi-movement Recital Suite. And, to help you choose just the right level for each student, an Alfred leveling chart is provided on page 4.
2
Bring Classics Alive for StudentsWe all want our students to know the music of masterwork composers. Jane Magrath has chosen original music by the most outstanding composers at each level in her graded Classics Alive! series (see page 6). Students who like a more contemporary flavor will savor the classical melodies that Martha Mier has arranged in her latest series, Classical Jazz, Rags & Blues (see page 5).
Introduce Students to Scales and Multiple Keys in a New WayYou will find that your students really enjoy playing scales when performing the music in Not Just Another Scale Book (See page 9). Why not have your students perform two pieces on a recital from this book—a piece in a major key and a corresponding piece in its relative minor? The short pieces in Piano Miniatures will have them playing in all keys with ease (see page 8). Because the pieces in this book are in a variety of styles, you may want to group three or four of them together to form a set on the recital.
Choose the Right Music at the Right PriceI have placed “star comments” on the following pages to help in choosing just the right music for every student. The introductory discounts on Value Pack materials are among the best that Alfred has ever offered. These materials can also be found at the finest music stores and I encourage you to visit and purchase from your local music retailer whenever possible.
All good wishes,
E. L. LancasterVice President/Keyboard Editor-in-ChiefAlfred Publishing Co., Inc.

Dazzling LightsThe Aurora Borealis, also referred to as the “Northern Lights,” is a dazzling display of multi-colored lights rippling across the sky.
It occurs when the electrical energy from the sun is carried to the Earth by the solar wind. When the energy collides with gas particles in the upper atmosphere close to the North Pole, the beautiful lights peel across the sky! These random displays can be seen
with the naked eye only at night and are often seen in the Alaskan skies.

Prairie MorningIllinois has more people than any other Midwestern state in the United States. Most of the state’s population is found in and around Chicago; however, millions live in the smaller cities around the state and on farms that are scattered across the rolling
plains. The Illinois plains were once grassland called “prairies.” These plains cover most of Illinois, thus earning it another nickname, the Prairie State.

AmericaVirginia was the first and largest of the colonies in America. Four of the first five presidents of the United States—
George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe—called Virginia home. Three other presidents (William Henry Harrison, John Tyler and Zachary Taylor) were also from Virginia.
More major Civil War battles took place in Virginia than in any other state. Since that time, Virginia has been the proud home of all branches of the military service as well as Arlington National Cemetery, the most famous national cemetery in the United States. The cemetery surrounds Arlington House, which was the home of General Robert E. Lee who commanded the
Confederate Army in the Civil War.

This outstanding video-lecture by Dr. Stewart Gordon is ideal for those who have trouble memorizing music or fear memory loss in performance. Five memorization processes are outlined, followed by exercises that will aid in typical memorization problems. Suggestions for incorporating these ideas into the teaching process are also provided.
With the timeless appeal of Beethoven’s 2 piano sonatas, you likely already have other editions in your music library. However, you will be surprised by these newly released editions of five of Beethoven’s most popular sonatas. Thorough research of Beethoven’s life and times has enabled Dr. Stewart Gordon to produce the most accurate reflection of the composer’s intent and to provide the key to a stylistic performance. Based on the earliest available sources, each sonata contains helpful fingering suggestions and performance recommendations.
