Elite High Performance TrainingCoach: Andrew Dabeka, RABC Assistant Pro.

The “Morning Elite Training” group is the pinnacle of the RABC’s high performance program. All of the RA’s best players, between 17 and 25-years-old, participate in this program. The goal of this program is to foster continuing development of our keen, competitive players, as they transition out of the junior age categories. This program is also starting to attract a base of “out-of-towners”, young adults who are studying at both Ottawa U and Carlelton U, who would also like to reach their potential in badminton. There is no doubt that having such a good base of Canada’s best players will start to attract more and more competitive players looking to go to the next level.

Court Usage Guidelines Nametags

Nametags identify the type of membership (Adult, Morning [star], Weekend [red stripes]) for all adult members. If you do not have a nametag (new member or guest), please pencil your name on a blank nametag.

Nametag Guidelines

a) Whenever a program is not running, nametags must be use on the play board

b) If it is your first time placing your nametag on the play board today, you may place it at the top of the on-deck list

c) At the end of your badminton session, please place your nametag to its original location

Play Board

On the right side of the play board, there are blocks from left to right for each of the courts numbered 1 through 6 and several blocks below each of these, indicating 20-minute time slots (clock times are hand-written to the left in 20 minute intervals). An on-deck stack is located to the left of this, holding all of the nametags of players waiting for a game.

Play Board Guidelines

a) Between the hours of OPEN to 9:00 am and 9:00 pm to CLOSE, fewer than FOUR players may be chosen for a court

b) Between the hours of 9:00 am to 9:00 pm, at least FOUR nametags must be chosen for every court, if possible

c) When it is FIVE minutes before the next time slot, nametags can must be RANDOMLY moved below the waitlist tag in the on-deck stack

d) When there are no longer any nametags above the waitlist tag, the waitlist tag moves to the bottom of the on-deck stack

e) Morning Program: continuous changing play board after each doubles game, each person rotates up, top person chooses next players. Singles games available if space permits. When using feather shuttles, each player contributes one at start of play.

Play Board Booking Procedure

The nametag at the top of the on-deck stack will pick a game for the next available time slot. In setting up a game, you place your nametag along with other player(s) of your choice into an empty block on the play board, thus reserving a specific court at a specific time. After your game, your nametag is randomly returned below the waitlist tag on the on-deck stack and the process starts over. To indicate that you do not wish to be picked again after your current game, place your nametag sideways in the reserved block.

Play Board Booking Guidelines

a) If the player at the top of the on-deck stack is nowhere to be found, their name will be removed

b) You may pick your game for a later time slot, if all the other members of your game agreed

c) You must pick from the nametags above the waitlist tag in the on-deck stack for your game

d) You may give up the choice of picking a game, but your nametag will be placed just above the waitlist tag

We would love your feedback at this first revision of the play board. Send your comment(s) to the following email: [email protected]

Court Rules & EtiquetteTo ensure the quiet and safe enjoyment of badminton by all members, Club members are expected to adhere to the RA Code of Ethics and the RA Badminton Club Code of Conduct.

New members may not be aware of the rules or what to expect in the area of court etiquette or conduct. In conjunction with the Code of Conduct, the points listed below are expected to be adhered to:

1. Walking between courts Please be aware of games in progress when you are walking by or between the courts. It’s very distracting to those playing when someone walking by is talking loudly or inadvertently strays onto the court. It can also be dangerous if the player does not see someone walk across the corner of the court and backs up to take a shot. Please wait until the rally is finished before you go between and around the courts.

2. Calling lines Calling lines is often a controversial issue. However, if you’re in doubt as to whether the bird is in, on the line, or out, you should call it in favour of your opponent. Be courteous and accept line calls in the spirit that most players offer them.

3. Sport Clothing A traditional white clothing rule in badminton is not observed. Coloured clothing is acceptible. The Club wishes to ensure a standard of dress on the court. Ripped t-shirts or cut-off shorts are not acceptable.

4. Non-marking court shoes Our hardwood floors are very susceptible to marking from black-soled shoes or scratches from grit-carrying outdoor shoes. Floor re-finishing is very expensive. The use of court shoes is enforced and players not using them may be requested to leave the courts.

5. Cell phones Please turn off your cell phones while on the courts. Please check for messages between games in the badminton lounge.

6. Courtesy Always be considerate to your fellow players. Most players like to challenge stronger players, so please accept games with players somewhat below your own level on an occasional basis so they learn to improve. If someone looks lost, offer to help them. Often, new members simply don’t understand the rules and need information. Don’t be afraid to ask someone you don’t know to play with you. Enjoy your game!

7. Members only Non-members may enter the badminton court or lounge areas ONLY as guests of a member as detailed under Guests overleaf.

8. Food and Drink Please refrain from bringing food or drink onto the courts other than normal sports snacks and drinks in non-spill containers.

9. Enjoy your game!

Protective EyewearThe existing Ontario Badminton Association (OBA) policy on eye protection is that all Junior players in Ontario must wear protective eyewear meeting the ASTM F803 Standard where there are more than two players on the same court at all OBA, District or affiliated club activities.

The ODBA has adopted the policy that normal prescription eyewear may be used in District and Club activities and in non-OBA-sanctioned tournaments, even though such eyewear does not meet the ASTM F803 standard, on the condition that parents are made aware of the risks involved, AND that parents accept all liability for injuries their children may sustain as a result of not using eyewear that meets the standard.

The RA Badminton Club and the RA Centre strongly urge parents to consider the potential for eye injuries and to encourage their children to wear protective eyewear. In allowing their children to NOT wear this equipment, parents are assumed to have accepted any liability for injury.

Nevertheless, all Junior participants in any tournament or event sanctioned by the OBA or the ODBA, MUST wear the protective eyewear in accordance with the policies, or they will NOT be allowed to participate.

Safeguarding Your ValuablesThe RA encourages members to take precautions with their valuables while at the RA. If you choose to leave your valuables in your car, ensure they are out of sight. You should also make sure your car is locked at all times. There are day-use lockers in all locker rooms and wallet lockers in LifeFIT Centre, the East and West lobbies at the RA Centre as well as the lobby of the Rideau Tennis Club. These wallet lockers are available for your use free of charge (see staff for a token). The Association is not responsible for lost, stolen or damaged items.

Get together after your game!

Available in the Fieldhouse Bar & Grill.
