Chichen Itza is one of the most famous Mayan ruins in the Yucatan peninsula. The Temple of Kukulkan was named one of the new Seven Wonders of the World, so visiting Chichen Itza is on top of everybody’s list. There are many tour companies that offer day trips to Chichen Itza, but I chose this tour because it guaranteed a small group (max of 25 people) and offered additional perks like a private entrance to the ruins at Chichen Itza along with being able to use the facilities at Mayaland resort and an optional “Be Maya” planetarium show. The guide picked us up from Cancun in a MercedesBenz van with plush reclining seats, although more legroom would have been great since it was a long drive from Cancun to Chichen Itza. We were a total of 17 people including our guide Carlos. Once we settled into our seats, Carlos gave us an excellent overview of Mayan history and culture. He explained the Mayan calendar system and their hieroglyphics, providing details about the ruins and facilities at the resort. We stopped enroute for a quick break to stretch our legs and the rest of the drive to Chichen Itza was uneventful. Most of us fell asleep and woke up a couple hours later to find ourselves at our destination. We headed into Mayaland resort to refresh ourselves as Carlos headed to the ticket office to get our tickets. Some of us had opted for the additional Planetarium show. In retrospect I’m glad we took that option. After getting our tickets, Carlos gave us an idea about what the rest of the day would look like: a twohour guided tour of the ruins, Share

Chichen  Itza!

Chichen  Itza  is  one  of  the  most  famous  Mayan  ruins  in  the  Yucatan  peninsula.  The  Temple  of  Kukulkan  was  named  one  of  the  new  Seven  Wonders  of  the  World,  so  visitingChichen  Itza  is  on  top  of  everybody’s  list.  There  are  many  tour  companies  that  offer  day  trips  to  Chichen  Itza,  but  I  chose  this  tour  because  it  guaranteed  a  small  group  (maxof  25  people)  and  offered  additional  perks  like  a  private  entrance  to  the  ruins  at  Chichen  Itza  along  with  being  able  to  use  the  facilities  at  Mayaland  resort  and  an  optional“Be  Maya”  planetarium  show.

The  guide  picked  us  up  from  Cancun  in  a  Mercedes-Benz  van  with  plush  reclining  seats,  although  more  legroom  would  have  been  great  since  it  was  a  long  drive  fromCancun  to  Chichen  Itza.  We  were  a  total  of  17  people  including  our  guide  Carlos.  Once  we  settled  into  our  seats,  Carlos  gave  us  an  excellent  overview  of  Mayan  history  andculture.  He  explained  the  Mayan  calendar  system  and  their  hieroglyphics,  providing  details  about  the  ruins  and  facilities  at  the  resort.  We  stopped  enroute  for  a  quick  breakto  stretch  our  legs  and  the  rest  of  the  drive  to  Chichen  Itza  was  uneventful.

Inretrospect  I’m  glad  we  took  that  option.  After  getting  our  tickets,  Carlos  gave  us  an  idea  about  what  the  rest  of  the  day  would  look  like:  a  two-hour  guided  tour  of  the  ruins,

followed  by  a  buffet  lunch  at  Mayaland.  Those  who  wanted  to  see  the  planetarium  show  would  do  so  after  lunch  while  the  rest  could  use  the  resort  facilities  to  swim  or  relax.

Carlos  was  a  phenomenal  guide.  He  had  so  much  knowledge  about  the  Mayan  ruins  and  their  history  and  narrated  such  interesting  &  fascinating  stories  that  we  were  quiteimpressed.  He  gave  us  a  guided  tour  of  the  entire  site  of  Chichen  Itza.  Where  we  learned  about  the  Temple  of  Kukulkan,  the  famous  Ball  Court,  the  Temple  of  Warriors  andthe  Astronomy  laboratory.  We  heard  the  quetzal’s  birdcall  through  echoes  of  our  own  clapping  hands  and  saw  photos  of  the  “slithering  serpent  effect”  on  the  Temple  ofKukulkan  (also  known  as  El  Castillo)  that  happens  during  spring  equinox  every  year.  Carlos  was  thoughtful  and  made  sure  to  stop  under  the  shade  so  that  everybody  couldgather  around  him  as  he  talked  about  the  ruins.

After  a  fantastic  two-hour  guided  tour,  we  were  all  hungry  for  lunch.  We  headed  to  Mayaland  Resort  (adjacent  to  Chichen  Itza  ruins)  by  1:30pm  and  lined  up  at  their  buffetlunch,  which  offered  a  variety  of  cuisines  like  International,  Mexican  and  Vegetarian.  We  did  not  have  much  time  after  lunch  to  go  back  to  see  the  ruins  at  leisure  because  theplanetarium  show  started  at  2:30pm,    lasted  45  mins  and  was  a  fantastic  introduction  to  Mayan  legends  and  history  and  their  accomplishments  in  the  fields  of  astronomy  andmath.

Getting  to  spend  the  entire  morning  and  afternoon  exploring  Chichen  Itza  ruins  was  a  great  experience.  We  enjoyed  the  lunch  at  Mayaland  resort  and  the  planetariumexperience  rounded  off  a  wonderful  day.  I  would  definitely  recommend  Viator’s  Chichen  Itza  Small  Group  Tour  with  Private  Entrance  for  anybody  looking  to  get  an  in-depthexperience  of  Mexico’s  most  famous  Mayan  ruins.
