Vivanta by Taj – Coral Reef, Maldives in collaboration with the Blue in Maldives Diving & Sailing in supervision of Mr. Markus Casutt has started a second Coral Rehabilitation Project to support, monitor and sustain the preservation of Maldivian coral reefs as we believe we owe this to the beauty that Maldivian ecosystem is giving to us!

The project promotes coral fragment settlement and growth by applying asexual propagation methods which are cost effective to a degraded reef by impacts due to human interactions.

The program kick started on 23 September 2011 in the spirit of celebrating the World Tourism Day (27 September 2011). A week long trips to the Indian Ocean selected sites will initiate the progress of the project.

Benefits of participating in such a project are:

• Essential for tourism and fisheries • Providing sea defenses for low-laying islands and beach erosion • Preserving coral reefs for future generations • Creating awareness among local communities and visiting guests • Active involvement is educational and fun • Showing corporate responsibility concern towards the marine environment • Creating attraction for the clientele of the resort • Reducing carbon footprint emissions

Plan of Action – Phase Wise Implementation

To start this new Coral Rehabilitation Project we created 6 coral tables made of reinforced steel bars, in house with our team of skilled engineers.

The previous coral project was very costly and needed a lot of manpower with extensive procedures of preparation and executions. Hence we adopted a different procedure to cut on the cost and length of the procedures and executions. Instead of gluing the coral fragments to a concrete plug, we attach the coral fragments with cable ties directly to the coral tables, which is considered as Phase I. It will take approximately 10 to 14 days for the coral fragments to attach themselves to the coral tables. Once they are attached they will start growing.

Phase - I

Plan of Action – Phase Wise Implementation

Phase - II

We are going to locate 2 coral tables in front of the swimming pool at a depth of 1.2 to 1.5 meters, since there are no corals at this stage. The area is well protected and provides water movement and sufficient nutrients for the growing corals.

A further two tables between Lagoon Villa 101 and 105 where the same conditions apply as stated for the area in front of the swimming pool. Another two tables would be placed in front of the Beach Villas 110 to 115 depending on the stability of the ground (the exact area will have to be checked and then agreed upon). This area will be deeper than the previous four tables, most likely between 5 to 8 meters. The corals fragments in this region will grow slower than the ones which are located in a shallower depth. Once the corals are attached to the coral table will be measured in order to have an indication of the growing process, this is considered Phase II.

Plan of Action – Phase Wise Implementation

The tables will be monitored once a week and re-measured after 3 months, which will be Phase III.

To conclude the project with Phase IV we will measure the corals for a final time after 6 months since commencing the project.

Phase – III & IV

For each phase will create a web report and a monitoring data which will state how many corals are on each of the different tables and their measurements, along with some photographic evidence.

If the results are satisfying we can apply the same from phase one to four at different locations around the resort.

This project would be a valuable advertising point for creating awareness, since we show proof of being actively involved in taking care of our marine environment.

To enhance this effect we have systematic plans and promotions to invite the guests to make a donation to “adopt a coral” and provide an underwater view of the adopted coral through the Web. The guests can then watch from home how their coral is growing. We are certain that the guests will be happy to participate in this endeavor. The project initiated by Vivanta by Taj – Coral Reef, Maldives and Blue In with the supervision of Mr. Markus Casutt is a sincere attempt to ensure a sustainable tourism at the resort.

Steps of Rehabilitation

It will take approximately 10 to 14 days for the coral fragments to attach themselves to the coral tables. Once they are attached they will start growing.

The coral species we will deal with are mainly Acropora, Pocillopora Damicornis, Heliopora, Porites but we will also use other species. The Acropora are fragile coral species but a fast growing one.
