Having recently celebrated our 10th anniversary and the success of the Falany Performing Arts Center, we are delighted to begin a new concert season. As we strive to provide quality programming at reasonable prices, we are excited to bring some of the world’s greatest artists to the Reinhardt family and the local

community. This year, we will again open our season with a concert by the Grammy Award-winning Atlanta Symphony Orchestra (August 3, 2012).

Last season, The Vienna Boys Choir graced our stage as our first special Patron Concert. We are thrilled to announce that the 2012–2013 season will have two special Patron Concerts: the Preservation Hall Jazz Band (Oct. 13, 2012) and Celtic Crossroads (Feb. 20, 2013). Tickets to these two concerts will be available to Patrons only until 45 days prior to the concert. Because of our Patrons’ generosity and continued support, we are able to bring such distinguished artists to our venue.

Our 2012–2013 concert season features several concerts by the Reinhardt University School of Music, with the University’s Christmas Concert being one of our most popular events of the season. This year we will also play host to the Golden Dragon Acrobats (October 28, 2012). This world renowned group is the only Chinese acrobatic company currently touring the U.S. We believe that this concert season provides a variety of options that appeal to all ages.

We are thankful to all of you who purchase tickets and attend our programs, to our Patrons and to those who support the mission of the Falany Performing Arts Center. We are especially grateful for the support from our Founders Club (listed below) who helped bring our total endowment fund to almost $100,000 last year.

We are delighted to have you as our guest at the Falany Performing Arts Center and look forward to seeing you!

Jessica AkersOperations Coordinator of the Falany Performing Arts Center

The Atlanta Symphony Orchestra is known for the excellence of its live performances and presentations, renowned choruses, and impressive list of Grammy® Award-winning recordings. José Franch-BallesterA native of Moncofa (Valencia, Spain) José Franch-Ballester is one of the most promising clarinetists of his generation. In 2008, he received the highly coveted Avery Fisher Career Grant, and in 2007, he was one of a handful of participants selected for a Carnegie Hall Professional Training Workshop with Emmanuel Ax and Richard Stoltzman. He was also selected as one of the year’s “most prominent emerging soloists,” by the American Symphony League Magazine.

As the first prize winner in both the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions in New York and the Astral Artists 2004 National Audition in Philadelphia, he has joined the roster of both organizations and performed countless concerts throughout the U.S., Europe, Asia and South America. The New York Times describes him – “He is a natural onstage... played with technical wizardry and tireless enthusiasm.”Tuesday, February 5, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.Adults – $30; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $25

Puccini’s “Madame Butterfly”presented by the Peach State OperaThe heart-wrenching story of Puccini’s beautiful geisha girl and her American naval lieutenant never grows old. The unwavering love of the young Japanese bride as she waits for the return of her husband, the clash of cultures and faiths, and the ultimate betrayal and tragic ending inspires some of opera’s most powerful and beautiful music.Sunday, February 10, 2013 at 3 p.m.Adults – $35; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $30

Peter KolkayCalled a “star ascendant” by San Francisco’s Classical Voice and “stunningly virtuosic” by The New York Times, bassoonist Peter Kolkay claimed First Prize at the 2002 Concert Artists Guild International Competition, the prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant in 2004 and the 2006 Carlos Surinach Prize from BMI in recognition of “outstanding service to American music.” His vibrant career encompasses solo and collaborative performances, premiering new works, engaging with the standard repertoire and frequent recording projects.

Kolkay recently performed the world premiere of Full Faith and Credit (a concerto for two bassoons and strings) by composer Harold Meltzer (2004–05 Rome Prize) with the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra, SFCO, which led The Classical Voice to comment: “His reputation is blossoming at a remarkable rate, perhaps not so surprisingly considering his many virtues. It wasn't merely technical control, but expressive depth that impressed.” The work was commissioned by the Concert Artist Guild and supported by a joint partnership between the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music, the Westchester Philharmonic and the SFCO.

The New York premiere with the Chamber Orchestra Kremlin was presented by the Brooklyn Friends of Chamber Music, followed by performances with the Westchester Philharmonic. He has since performed the piece with members of the Utah Symphony in a special performance in July 2008 for the annual conference of the International Double Reed Society.Tuesday, March 19, 2013 at 7:30 p.m.Adults – $25; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $20

Calmus The Calmus ensemble was formed in 1999, when five former members of the St. Thomas Boys’ Choir in Leipzig, Germany, became a vocal quintet right after graduating. They soon had successful concert performances all over Germany. When they decided to become more flexible in their choice of repertoire, the female touch in the upper register was missing. They searched and soon found Anja Lipfert. Since 2001, she has crowned the Ensemble’s sound with her bright soprano voice cultivated in her years in the MDR Kinderchor (Children’s Choir of the Middle German State Radio Network) and which continues to be developed at the Leipzig Conservatory.

As they expanded their range, Calmus’ repertoire also expanded, and its stylistic variety is almost unlimited. Whether it is music of the Gregorian period, of Machaut, Palestrina, Bach, Verdi or contemporary sacred music, or the great variety of profane music extending from madrigals to folksongs or rock – these singers from Leipzig are at home in all styles, but they also add their own personal touch. Not limiting themselves to traditional repertoire, they have a series of their own arrangements, as well as commissioned works, in their repertoire. Apart from a cappella music, they take active interest in breaking down barriers in the periods from the Baroque to experimental Jazz.Thursday, April 4, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Adults – $35; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $30

Hotlanta Dixieland Jazz BandReturning to the Falany Performing Arts Center by popular de-mand, this exciting band sets your feet firmly on Bourbon Street in Old New Orleans. You’ll experience every bit of the joy, energy and humor of that early American Jazz called Dixieland. Songs from Fats Waller, Hoagy Carmichael, Louie Armstrong, Jelly Roll Mor-ton, plus many old favorites like “Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Royal Garden Blues,” “South,” “Hard Hearted Hannah,” and “When The Saints Go Marchin’ In” are all part of Hotlanta’s musical treat.

Based in Atlanta, the group has performed extensively in the South since its founding by Don Erdman in 1990 with appearances at “The Famous Door” on Bourbon Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, the Brevard College Jazz Festival in North Carolina, and the Piccolo Spoleto Festival in Charleston, to name a few. Beyond the South, Hotlanta's music has been enjoyed around the globe at clubs and jazz festivals in Spain, Germany, Japan, France, Belgium, Finland, Denmark, Poland, Belarus, Saudi Arabia and Singapore.

Hotlanta concerts aim to entertain. Audiences become part of the concert by making requests. From a list in their program, the audience are invited to write down their requests during intermis-sion. These requests are performed during the second half of the concert. Audiences always have a great time with this popular Hot-lanta feature. Mary Louise KnutsonMinneapolis-based jazz pianist and composer Mary Louise Knut-son has been called “one of the most exciting and innovative artists to happen to jazz piano in quite some time.” Her warm, inviting tone, broad range of emotional expression, and distinctive com-positions have brought her much recognition on the national mu-sic scene. Her debut jazz trio CD, Call Me When You Get There, charted in the Top 50 in the United States and Canada for eight consecutive weeks and earned Knutson the award for Top New Jazz Instrumentalist of the Year from KWJL Radio, Calif., in 2001. Featured tracks include her award-winning compositions and sig-nature arrangements of such jazz classics as “Tangerine,” “Green Dolphin Street (mp3),” and “Gone With the Wind,” and range from the joyful lyricism of “Call Me When You Get There” to the impassioned blaze of “Meridian.”

Knutson has performed with such jazz greats as Dizzy Gillespie, Bobby McFerrin, Dianne Reeves, Kevin Mahogany, Nicholas Payton, Bobby Shew and Doc Severinsen. As a show player, she has performed with such artists as Jor-din Sparks, Michael Bolton, Trisha Year-wood, Sam Moore, Donny Osmond, Smoky Robinson, the Osmond Brothers, and comedians Phyllis Diller, Jack Carter, Rob Schneider, Kevin Nealan, Judy Te-nuta and more.Tuesday, January 15, 2013 at 7:30 p.m. Adults – $25; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $20

Preservation Hall Jazz Band*The Preservation Hall Jazz Band derives its name from Preserva-tion Hall, the venerable music venue located in the heart of New Orleans’ French Quarter, founded in 1961 by Allan and Sandra Jaffe. The band has traveled worldwide spreading their mission to nurture and perpetuate the art form of New Orleans Jazz. Wheth-er performing at Carnegie Hall or The Lincoln Center, for Brit-ish Royalty or the King of Thailand, this music embodies a joyful, timeless spirit. Under the auspices of current director Ben Jaffe, the son of founders Allan and Sandra, Preservation Hall continues with a deep reverence and consciousness of its greatest attributes in the modern day as a venue, band and record label.

The building that houses Preservation Hall has contained many businesses over the years including a tavern during the War of 1812, a photo studio and an art gallery. It was during the years of the art gallery that then owner, Larry Borenstein, began holding informal jam sessions for his close friends. Out of these sessions grew the concept of Preservation Hall. The intimate venue, whose weathered exterior has been untouched over its history, is a living embodiment of its original vision. To this day, Preservation Hall has no drinks, air conditioning, or other typical accoutrements. It is strictly welcoming to people of all ages who are interested in having one of the last pure music experiences left on the earth.

The Preservation Hall Jazz Band began touring in 1963, and for many years several bands successfully toured under the name Preservation Hall. Many of the band’s charter members performed with the pioneers who invented jazz in the early Twentieth Cen-tury including Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton, Louis Armstrong and Bunk Johnson. Band leaders over the band’s history include the brothers Willie and Percy Humphrey, husband and wife Bil-lie and De De Pierce, famed pianist Sweet Emma Barrett and, in the modern day,Wendall and John Brunious. These founding art-ists, and dozens of others, passed on the lessons of their music to a younger generation who now follow in their footsteps like the current lineup.Saturday, October 13, 2012 at 7:30 p.m.Adults – $35–$50; Seniors (55+) and Students – $30–45Children (12 and younger) – $20–$35*Patron Concert: Public may purchase tickets 45 days prior to this event.

Branson Country ChristmasPresented by Ozark JublieeHeadlining the Ozark Jubilee is Branson’s funniest comedian and champion fiddler player – Doofus Doolittle. Branson Coun-try Christmas is a blend between country music and traditional Christmas selections. Doofus Doolittle is not only a superb co-median, but performs some of “the best fiddle music anywhere!” After doing sev-eral shows with Porter Wagoner, Wagoner invited Doofus to be a special guest of his on the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, Tenn. After an overwhelming response, Wagoner brought Doofus back to the stage to close his portion of the Opry with a fiddle tune.

Randy Newman, whose alter ego is Doo-fus Doolittle, surrounds himself with the best musicians in the business! Steve Ritchey is in his second year with the Ozark Jubilee and is tops in his field. He has worked with several shows in Branson, as well as several Nashville artists. Also starting his second year with the group is Tyler Hall on steel guitar. The youngest member of the Ozark Jubilee, he is a phenomenal talent. Doug Driesel on the bass guitar is brand new this year. He has worked with a number of art-ists from Silver Dollar City to Jim Stafford, George Jones and many others. His talent shines not only as a bass player but also as a tremendous vocalist. Musical director Jory Clayton has been with the Ozark Jubilee more than 10 years! Clayton plays piano, keyboards and synthesizer and arranges the music for the band. Having worked with numerous Nashville artists, Clayton’s talents as a musician and musical director produce a quality of music second to none. The Ozark Jubilee are sporting new vocal-ists. Richard Ebert from Nashville, Tenn., is the male vocalist. He is extremely talented and covers a wide range of music styles. The female vocalist is filled by a newcomer to the Branson area, Rachelle Lamb. Join us as we celebrate Christmas the Branson way!Sunday, December 9, 2012 at 3 p.m. Adults – $35; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $30

This will mark the 6th performance by the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra at the Falany Performing Arts Center. Atlanta Mandolin was established in 1994, and is made up of mandolinists, guitarists, and bassists whom have joined together to form the performing unit of the Atlanta Mandolin Society. Un-der the direction of conductor Robb Smith, music selections range from turn of the cen-tury rags and marches, classical, Latin, Irish, jazz, Brazilian, and ethnic compositions to seasonal works. This season the Atlanta Mandolin Orchestra’s performance will be followed Dr. Matthew Anderson, a distin-guished classical guitarist.

Anderson has distinguished himself in the musical world in a number of ways. He is a founding member of the acclaimed and internationally managed chamber group the Athens Guitar Trio and as a soloist, has found demand as a concert artist and stu-dio musician. He has performed throughout the United States for such distinguished in-dividuals as former president Jimmy Carter, former Atlanta mayor Shirley Franklin, award-winning composer Simone Fontanel-li of the Mozarteum University, and world-renowned guitarist Christopher Parkening. Anderson was the featured guitarist on the 2005 documentary film, “Alvar Sunol: His Vision and His Art”; and, he was the clas-sical guitarist on Sam Hagan’s album His Eye is on the Sparrow. He has also given the

Georgia premier of several works, including Chiel Meijering’s “Autobahnkrieg,” Yamil Berguener's “Ranvicnaxanaxac Lsoxoic,” and Federico Ghedini’s “Studio da Concer-to.” As a competitor, he won first prize and convention recitalist in the 2003 Georgia Music Teachers Association Spring Com-petition and was a semi-finalist in the 2007 Columbus State University Guitar Sympo-sium International Competition. He also often performs solo and chamber music on a rare eleven-string guitar built for him by Kenny Hill. He has helped to expand the solo repertoire for this new instrument and create a new chamber repertoire by arrang-ing and commissioning pieces for this spe-cial instrument.

Anderson was a Presidential Scholar at Georgia State University, where he studied under John Sutherland. Matthew chose to continue his studies with John Sutherland at The University of Georgia, and had a presti-gious university-wide teaching assistantship in the areas of guitar and music theory, go-ing on to receive both his master’s and doc-toral degrees in performance.

He is currently on the music faculty at Reinhardt University in Waleska, Ga. Sunday, January 13, 2013 at 3 p.m.Adults – $20; Seniors (55+) and Children (12 and younger) – $15
