Message from the Tournament Organiser Mr Andrew Salton, 5th Dan

Instructor, Horowhenua Taekwon-Do Club

Hi All, Welcome to Levin, the Heart of the Horowhenua, and home of the Horowhenua Taekwon-Do Club. It is our pleasure to bring this National event to you all. After about a year’s planning the day has finally arrived. Congratulations to all you ITFNZ students who have been selected to represent your region at this annual event. It’s time to show off your skills and determination in the best way you know how. This year’s Nationals are the largest in ITFNZ history - with a record 385 plus competitors. It has been quite a challenge for such an event to be hosted in such a small town as Levin and quite a challenging experience trying to fit all events into a small arena in the space of only two days. We (the organizers) never thought that there would be such numbers competing – the preparation pace really picked up when the team lists came through! I would like to wish all competitors the best of luck for their part in the competition. May we all compete in the true spirit of sportsmanship, and may the best athletes prevail. A big thanks go to all those who helped in the preparation for this event. On a final note I wish all the best to the members of the ITFNZ National Team who will compete in Dortmund, Germany next month. I’m sure you have all been training hard and you will do yourself and the country proud. My final words of wisdom: “There is no spirit like a Kiwi Spirit.” Go hard. Andrew Salton Tournament Organiser

Host Club Horowhenua

Horowhenua Club is celebrating thirty years in existence this year. The Club was started by Mister Norman Ng, 4th Dan in 1974-5 as the Levin Branch of Ng’s Academy in Palmerston North (ref YJD Talk profile; see itfnz.org.nz/tkdtalk/profile_nn.html0 ). After about a year, the Club was handed over to one of its senior members, Mr Tony Assema. In 1986 a second club, named the Horowhenua Taekwon-Do Club, was formed by Mr Andrew Salton, 5th Dan. The clubs were then amalgamated under Mr Salton in 1990. The Club has produced nine past New Zealand Team members, including Mr Salton, who is a two times National coach. Horowhenua Taekwon-Do club currently has four 1st Dan and one 2nd Dan training, and three 2nd Gups and six 1st Gups. One 1st Gup will be grading for Black Belt the week before this Tournament. The club has 50 active members training, and for us oldies it is heart warming to see the numbers and the spirit shown by all the young members in our club and across the whole organization. Do come and visit for some great training with Mr Salton. It is a tribute to the spirit of the Horowhenua Club to see how strongly parents and members have got behind Mr Salton and your National Tournament. A big thank you to all the parents and club members for the time and effort you have and will put in to organizing and running this Tournament weekend.

A Tribute to a Legend: Mr Harry Hemana By Andrew Salton One of ITFNZ’s greatest Taekwon-Do practitioners and instructors, Mr Harry Hemana, has recently passed away. I have known Harry for almost all of my Taekwon-Do life, and I got to know him even better when he first joined ITF in early 1988. Mr Hemana was a determined man who set his standards at the highest level, both physical and mental. He believed in the true spirit of Taekwon-Do and this showed in his attitude towards all that he did and all those he knew. He was coach to the New Zealand National Team that went to Indonesia in early 1982. He was also regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest umpires in those early years of competition and was one of the main referees during the 1985 Sharp International Tournament. He led a team of New Zealand competitors to an international event held in Sydney, Australia in May 1989 and promoted many Taekwon-Do fighters in the kick boxing circuit during the early 1990’s. He trained and produced some of New Zealand’s top sparrers in the early years and went on to establish himself as one of the top instructors within New Zealand. In 1987 Mr Hemana left the Master Yun-run New Zealand organisation after falling out with the Master. He then spent years dedicating himself to learning the ITF system. He worked hard to gain the knowledge that would make him a true ITF practitioner under General Choi’s Chang Hon style. He was inducted into the New Zealand Martial Arts Hall of Fame in the year 2000. For ten years I had a close relationship with Mr Hemana as one of his senior studentSInstructors during the “South Pacific” organisation days. I had also been coached by Harry when I was part of the 1982 Nationals Team to Indonesia. He helped me become a better Martial Artist with his teachings and philosophy. He didn’t have too much to say at times but when he wanted to get his point across you certainly knew what he was trying to say or do. He would always be truthful whether you liked it or not. One of the things that I admired most about Harry was his ability to bring out the best in a student, whether by his actions or by his voice. I believe that Mr Hemana influenced many people, especially those in the Wellington region. His attitude and determination made him the man that he was. He was strong willed and he had the courage to speak his mind. All ITFNZ members need to know about this pioneer of New Zealand Taekwon-Do, who helped establish the Art in this country. Harry Hemana was a true Friend, Champion and Teacher. He was respected by all and he will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Thank you Harry, for all you did for Taekwon-Do in New Zealand.
