FEATURES
Piezo-MEMS vibration energy harvester or MPG patented technology (patents issued and pending) o Green renewable energy product o Waste Electronic and Electrical Equipment (WEEE) compliant; CMOS compatible o European Union's (EU) Restrictions on Hazardous Substances (RoHS) compliant
MPG and Power Cell operational frequencies targeted for fixed-frequency industrial, building and commercial applications o Single vibrational axis with 50 Hz (EU/Asia) and 60 Hz (US/Canada) harmonics ranging from 100 to 1500 Hz o Voltage and power depend upon configuration (see tables and data-sheets).
Micro-Power Product Line for Industrial & Building Wireless Sensor Applications MicroGen Systems' BOLT family of products includes both micro-power generators (MPG) and micro-power energy harvesting conversion modules or Power Cells.
MPGs are fabricated using proprietary piezoelectric MicroElectroMechanical Systems (piezo-MEMS) platform technology. MicroGen's MPG devices convert mechanical vibration to electrical energy.
MicroGen's Power Cells are drop-in conventional battery replacement power sources. Power Cells contain MPGs, electronics for rectification, impedance matching and voltage regulation, and a small capacitor for energy storage.
For increased energy storage, plug-in energy storage modules are available. These include either an ultra-capacitor or rechargeable battery, and a battery management chip.
Let MicroGen provide the energy harvesting ‘building blocks’ for powering your autonomous electronics, wireless sensor, and rechargeable battery application.

Micro-power generators
In Figure 1(a) a Piezoelectric MicroElectroMechanical Systems (piezo-MEMS) vibration energy
harvester or micro-power generator (MPG) is shown without packaging. The green-silver trapezoidal area
is a 25-100 m thick cantilever with several thin-film layers, including at least one piezoelectirc layer.
This cantilever region acts like a spring with spring-constant kc. Attached to the cantilver is a relatively
large silicon end-mass M (grey rectangle). This is a fixed-frequency device, where the resonant frequency
R=(1/2)(kc/M)1/2
. In Figure 1(b) a graph of alternating current (AC) peak loaded power versus external
vibration frequency for a BOLT-R0600 is displayed. This is an MPG with Pload = Pmax = ~900 Watts AC
at R = 600 Hz.
See video showing how this device works at video.
Table 1 shows MPGs that will be avaliable as pre-production engineering samples for evaluation in

becomes available.

In Figure 2(a) a 3.3 Volt DC BOLT™ PowerCell showing an internal MPG, AC-DC conversion
electronics (using Linear Technology’s LTC-3588 Piezoelectric Energy Harvesting converter) including
flashing LED circuitry, LED, 300 Farad capacitive energy storage, and voltage regulation. Operational
frequencies range from 100 to 1500 Hz depending upon MPG design. Output power ranges from 25 to
500 Watts DC depending upon frequency and configuation. In Figure 2(b) a Power Cell is shown with a
Texas Instruments eZ430 wireless sensor mote (see demonstration video of a PowerCell powering the TI
mote demo). In Figure 2(c) a Power Cell is shown connected to a Linear Technology/Dust Networks’
