PRINCIPAL’S REPORT
Class changes: Letters have been sent to each family at Ranfurly Primary School to let everyone know that, due to increased enrolments, we will be adding a class, and making some adjustments to ensure every student and every teacher has the best possible opportunity to make an impact on teaching and learning. Individual letters will be sent to the relevant families by the end of this week. Thank you for your understanding and patience. Student led conferences: Thank you to the families who attended student led conferences last Tuesday and Thursday. While it is a busy time for teachers, it is also wonderful to see so many families in school, talking with their child and the teacher about the learning they are doing. Somers Camp: Seventeen of our grade 5 and 6 students headed off to Somers on Monday, accompanied by Mrs Hogg, for a wonderful, exciting and challenging week. School Council Elections: Nominations for parent representatives close today. We are seeking 3 parent representatives for a two year period. Nomination forms for parent representatives are included with this
newsletter. More forms are available at the office. Please consider nominating for parent representative. Car parking: Could all families please remember that the side entrance is NOT for student drop off/pickups. This is where our students enter with their bikes or on foot and it is dangerous to have cars in this area. We will be monitoring this area. Hats: Students and families are reminded that only broad brimmed hats may be worn at school/in the yard. This is part of our uniform policy. Peak caps are not acceptable and may not be worn at school at all.
School uniform: I would like to congratulate the vast majority of our students and their families on the effort they have made to wear our school uniform. It has been wonderful walking around the school, and particularly at assembly, to see almost everyone in full school uniform.
Every day counts – school attendance
Learning time at Ranfurly Primary School starts at 8.45, when students are expected to be sitting down in the classroom ready to learn. Classrooms are open at 8.30 and students should be putting away their bags and getting ready to sit down by 8.45. Please make sure your child arrives on time, ready to learn.

SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS Our first School Council: Tuesday February 18th and we will set the date for elections and our AGM. School councils play a key role in Victorian government schools. Participating as a school council member is a rewarding and challenging experience. The school council supports the principal to provide the best possible educational outcomes for students. Do I have what it takes to be on school council? You need to be keen, but you don’t need to be an
expert You need to like people and be able to work in a
team You do need to be prepared to commit the time
needed to ensure the work of council gets done School councils work best when they have people
from a variety of backgrounds and have different experiences
Why would I want to be on school council? It’s a great way to get involved and have a real say
in what your school is doing for its students It’s a very good way to help present and future
students of the school Your children may feel a greater sense of belonging
with the school What is the workload? School council must meet at least 8 times in each year, and at least once per school term Meetings should be restricted to approximately 2.5 hours duration at most Where can I find out more? The principal The school council president Past and present school councilors
SCHOOL COUNCIL ELECTIONS – INFORMATION FOR PARENTS
School Council Elections 2014 What is a school council and what does it do? All government schools in Victoria have a school council. They are legally formed bodies that are given powers to set the key directions of a school within centrally provided guidelines. In doing this, a school council is able to directly influence the quality of education that the school provides for its students. Who is on the school council? There are three possible categories of membership: A mandated elected Parent category. More
than one third of the total members must be from this category. Department of Education and Early Childhood Development (DEECD) employees can be Parent members at their child’s school as long as they are not employed at the school.
A mandated elected DEECD employee category. Members of this category may make up no more than one third of the total membership of school council. The principal of the school is automatically one of these members.
An optional Community member category. Its members are appointed by a decision of the council because of their special skills, interests or
experiences. DEECD employees are not eligible to be Community members.
The term of office for all members is two years. Half the members must retire each year, creating vacancies for the annual school council elections. Why is Parent membership so important? Parents on school councils provide important viewpoints and have valuable skills that can help shape the direction of the school. Those parents who become active on a school council find their involvement satisfying in itself and may also find that their children feel a greater sense of belonging. How can you become involved? The most obvious way is to vote in the elections, which are held in Term 1 each year. However, ballots are only held if more people nominate as candidates than there are positions vacant. In view of this, you might seriously consider standing for election as a member of the school
council encouraging another person to stand for election. Do I need special experience to be on school council? No. What you do need is an interest in your child’s school and the desire to work in partnership with others to help shape the school’s future. Nominations for school council close March 5, 2014.
