This Athletic Handbook was written to familiarize student athletesand their parents with the policies and procedures in the AthleticDepartment. This handbook is written within the guidelines of thepolicies and procedures of Calhoun Community College on pageeight of the College Catalog and in no way supersedes any policy ofthe College. It is merely an explanation of the policies and proce-dures that apply to the Athletic Department. All student athletesand members of the Athletic Department are expected to abide bythe procedures in this handbook and exemplify model citizenshipat the college and in the community.

Athletic competition is an integral part of the overall educationalprogram at Calhoun Community College. Academic success will bethe primary goal of each and every student athlete and member ofthe Athletic Department staff.

Athletics contributes to education. Success, failure, social contri-butions, respect for authority, competition, physical growth, men-tal health, leadership, quick thinking, sacrifice, and self-disciplineonly scratch the surface of the areas in which athletics contribute.Calhoun’s Athletic Department believe the playing area acts as alaboratory of life and encourages participation for the fullest devel-opment of each individual’s maximum potential.

Education is an investment for tomorrow as well as a requirementof our democratic way of life. Education will be kept in its properperspective as our foremost goal.

This handbook is updated annually and contains material that iscurrent and correct. All questions or concerns not answered by thishandbook should be directed to the Athletic Director and/or Deanof Student Affairs.

Absences arecounted beginning with the first class meeting after the stu-dent registers; however, students are responsible for allcoursework and assignments made or due from the first day ofclass. In general, students should have no more than 4absences for a 15-week term, no more than 3 absences for a10-week term, no more than 2 absences for an 8-week term,and no more than 1 absence for a 5-week term. Each coursesyllabus will clearly state the number of absences consideredas the acceptable maximum for the class as well as how latearrivals and early departures will be handled. Each coursesyllabus will also state policies regarding make-up work, ifallowed. The policies stated in the course syllabus for a stu-dent’s specific class will be the policies for which the studentwill be held accountable. Communication with the instructorconcerning absences is essential. If a student has excessiveabsences, he/she must consult with the instructor.Instructors will not withdraw students for any reason. Failureto officially withdraw from the course could result in a gradeof F and adversely impact financial aid. Withdrawing from acourse is the responsibility of the student. Therefore, a gradeof F will not be changed without written approval from theVice President of Instruction and Student Services. Militarypersonnel who are involuntarily called to active duty forunscheduled and/or emergency situations and those individu-als called for jury duty will be excused with official documen-tation. College related events (athletic competition) which thestudent is required to attend by the club sponsor and whichhave been approved by the appropriate Dean, will also beexcused. Official documentation will be required. Make-upwork will be accepted under these excused circumstances as

outlined in the individual course syllabus. It is the studentathlete’s responsibility to contact the instructor to requestarrangements with the instructor to make up assignments/testswithin seven (7) days.

FOR DISTANCE EDUCATION/HYBRID CLASSES:Attendance in a Distance Education or Hybrid course will berecorded within the FIRST WEEK of the course by one or moreof the following:• Student contact with the instructor through attendance at

an onsite orientation session;• Student participation in an online orientation session that

is tracked through Blackboard’s “Student Tracking” feature,or through “Tegrity Reports”, or similar features in othercourse management systems;

• Student sending an e-mail to the instructor’s Calhounaddress or Blackboard e-mail;

• Student making phone call to the instructor’s Calhounoffice or an in-person visit to the instructor; and/or

• Student submission (online or in-person) of completed assess-ments, assignments, essays, or other course related work.

After the first week, the student’s “attendance record” will bebased on the student’s meeting course requirements such as sub-mitting assignments or communicating with the instructor asoutlined in the course syllabus. It is expected that a student willreceive a weekly attendance record based on requirements statedin the course syllabus. If a student does not meet attendancerequirements as stated in the course syllabus, the student isencouraged to officially withdraw from the course. Failure toofficially withdraw from the course could result in a grade of Fand adversely impact financial aid.

Appeals of involuntary withdrawals are made at the divisionallevel to the division chairperson.

Military personnel who are involuntarily called to active dutyfor unscheduled and or emergency situations and those individ-uals called for jury duty will be excused. Official documenta-tion will be required. College related events such as fieldtrips, athletic competitions, and drama productions, whichare documented by the college, will also be excused. Officialdocumentation will be required.

A student-athlete’s eligibility may be jeopardized if a studentreceives a withdrawal (W) in a course. It is imperative that allstudent-athletes complete all assignments/tests missed in atimely manner.
