Description

The PDMS Chip Interface (Part No. 3200232) allows users to create fast and reliable fluidic connections to PDMS-on-glass devices. The interface is designed to be used with a PDMS device (fabricated by the user) mounted to a PDMS Chip Slide with pre-drilled holes for fluidic connection (2 sizes available). Designing a PDMS device to fit the Dolomite format is quick and easy when following the design guidelines. Fabrication can be carried out using existing methods and equipment. The PDMS Chip Interface is compatible with the Multiflux® Linear Connector 4-way (Part No. 3000024) to provide 4 or 8 fluidic connections from 1/16” OD tubing to the PDMS chip.

Design Guidelines

In order to design a compatible PDMS device for use with the PDMS Chip Interface, it is necessary to follow 5 simple steps:

1. Decide if you require 4 fluidic connections or 8 fluidic connections.

a. 4 connections can be made with one PDMS Chip Interface and one Linear Connector 4-way. Two chips can be mounted to each slide.

b. 8 connections can be made with two PDMS Chip Interfaces and two Linear Connectors 4-way. One chip can be mounted to each slide.

2. Decide if your device length fits onto the standard 50 x 25 mm slide or if you require the longer 75 x 25 mm slide.

3. Design pad features in PDMS (recommended Ø1 mm) at a pitch of 3 mm to align with Ø0.5 holes in glass slide. These are the inlet and outlet ports.

4. Design outer dimensions of PDMS device ensuring that the boundaries are within the maximum width and length specified.

a. Maximum width is 15 mm. The maximum distance from outside port to PDMS side edges is 3 mm.

b. Maximum length depends on the number of fluidic connections (step 1) and the slide size selected (step 2). The maximum distance from inlet and outlet ports to PDMS back edge is 3 mm.

5. Design channel features in PDMS ensuring that all features to be viewed are positioned at least 3 mm from the inlet and outlet ports. Visible features should be outside of the red box in the diagram below.

Fabrication Guidelines

Fabrication of the PDMS device can be carried out using existing soft lithographic methods and equipment:

1. Fabricate a photoresist master (spin coat photoresist onto a silicon wafer, expose and develop).

2. Degas the PDMS mixture. Then cast the PDMS onto the master, cure and peel the wafer of PDMS replicas from the photoresist master. The PDMS height should be no greater than 6 mm.

3. Dice the wafer of PDMS replicas into individual chips ensuring that outer dimensions are within the allowed size.

4. Ensure that bonding surfaces of the glass and PDMS are clean then expose both surfaces to O2 plasma.

5. Align PDMS pad features to holes in the glass slide by eye or using low magnification eyepiece or viewer. Apply light pressure to create bond.

6. The completed PDMS chip can then be used with the PDMS Chip Interface.

Described above is a typical soft lithography process, but alternative methods may be used for the creation of channel features in the PDMS.
