    WAR of words has erupted

    after DA shadow Minister

    of Health, Dr Wilmot

    James, accused the Pro-

    vincial HealthDepartment

    of gross mismanagement and found

that there was a dangerous medicine

    shortage at PEs Livingstone Hospital.

Dr James has been accused by the De-

    partment ofHealths Provincial spokes-

person, Sizwe Kupelo, of lying and or-

chestrating a plot to embarrass the rul-

ing party. Dr James compiled a report

after an oversight visit to the hospital

    last week.

Dr James said he found critical prob-

lem areas which needed immediate at-

tention by the health ministry, includ-

    ing the following:

The shortage of medicine for chron-

    ic diseases such as TB and HIV;

    The Department of Health bungled

    a tender for medicine distribution,

    making a late tender announcement;

    The late distribution of medication

to the hospital by the provincial depart-

    ment.

    The R15 million world-class Ebola

isolation ward which has remained a

white elephant since being installed in

    2010;

    Contamination of critical medica-

    tion;

    Oldmedicine lines are being phased

out and new ones phased in, with no

training provided to the health profes-

    sionals charged with administrating

and dispensing the medication to pa-

    tients.

    Kupelo, however, denied these

    claims saying the DAs allegations

against the hospital are false. He added

that the allegationswere a part of a ploy

    to discredit the ANC.

Allegations by the DA are untrue.

We can confirm the visit by Democratic

    Alliance members to Livingstone Hos-

pital; however, the allegations that the

hospital is experiencing a stock short-

age are mischievous and are designed

to embarrass the ruling party, as politi-

    cal parties are contesting by-elections

in the Metro. It is unfortunate that the

hospital is targeted and that the DA has

chosen to spread lies about health serv-

    ices in this area.

    Kupelo said the hospital currently

has 98% of its critical chronic medica-

tion, saying that a medical depot was

    available in the Metro.

We need to emphasize the fact that

there is no shortage ofmedicines at Liv-

ingstone hospital or in our main pro-

    vincial medical depot.

We have stock of all the items listed

by the DA in its media statement except

    furosemide injectable. Furosemide tab-

lets are available and other alterna-

tives which would depend on a doctors

assessment of the condition of the pa-

    tient.

    This furosemide injectable is not

available due to a manufacturers prob-

lem nationally and is not only affecting

    the Eastern Cape province.

We wish to congratulate the Demo-

cratic Alliance for wittingly or unwit-

    tingly embarrassing themselves in

their desperate attempt to fault the peo-

    ples government.

We further challenge them to sub-

stantiate their claim or shut up, said

    Kupelo.

Dr James said he had spoken to the Medical Control

Council (MCC) - a statutory body that oversees the regu-

lation ofmedicines in SouthAfrica - as well as theHospi-

tals senior leadership, who both agreed with his find-

    ings.

The statement made by the Department of Health

Provincial spokesperson I reject with the contempt it de-

serves. I will not stoop to his level and will let only the

facts speak for themselves. I have spoken to the MCC

and the senior management at the hospital who concur

with my findings. It is quite clear there is poor manage-

ment of medication in the province and nationally and

the Minister of Health needs to be thorough and ensure

that this problem is solved, said Dr James.

Some of themedication Dr James claims are in short

    fall include:

    ACE Inhibitors needed to treat hypertension;

    Furosemide for treatingwater retention linkedusual-

    ly to heart failure and liver disease;

    Asthma pumps;

    Syringes;

    Multi-drug resistance TB drugs;

    Oral hypoglycemic drugs.

In a media statement Dr James said that the Minister

of Health, Dr Aaron Motsoaledi, immediately responded

by arranging ameeting on his (Jamess) request to imme-

diately intervene at the hospital to ensure that it is

stockedwith thenecessarymedicines to treat its patients.

Dr James added, Running out of medicine could be

life threatening. If government fails to stock our hospi-

tals, it is literally putting peoples lives at risk. It cannot

be ignored. I will, together with other DA colleagues be

conducting a national stock-in campaign, to systemati-

cally conduct oversight of health facilities in every prov-

ince over the next three weeks. We will try to assist all

health facilities that are struggling to get the medicines

    they need.

In August this year the PE Express reported shocking

allegations by a local Reverend and several former Liv-

ingstone hospital patients who took to social media in

an attempt to expose the alleged horrific conditions at

    the hospital.

Rev. Michael Hutchinson created the Facebook page

    STOPLivingstoneHospitalMedicalNegligencewhich

has received over 2 300 followers after the death of his

uncle due towhatHutchinson claimedwas the hospitals

    negligence.

On this Facebook page many others have lambasted

the hospital claiming that patients are turned away at

will, exposed to used needles and bloodied medication

lying around, incompetent staff and shortages in medi-

    cal supplies.

MCC Director, Estelle Taute said that she was not

aware of any shortfall inmedication at the hospital, say-

ing, We regulate medicine and we have nothing to do

with the distribution or tender process. I have no idea

about any issues pertaining to the hospital.

NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality say they are cur-

rently implementing refurbishments and upgrades at

five water treatment works which aim to ultimately

upgrade all eight facilities providing drinking water

to the tune of more than a billion rands.

In a media statement Mayoral spokesperson, Kupi-

do Baron, said this follows the demand for potable wa-

ter from the population of 1,1 million residents who

consistently increased at approximately 6% over the

    last couple of years.

    Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Ener-

gy Standing Committee Chairperson, Andile Mfunda,

said the consistent growth in demand is a good reason

for the refurbishment and upgrading of all municipal

Water Treatment Works in order to continue with the

supply of good quality drinkable water to all consum-

ers in the near and long term future.

The upgrades will accommodate the exceptional

growth in the housing delivery programme of the mu-

nicipality and provide adequate supply for the indus-

trial and economic growth of the Coega Industrial De-

velopment Zone, further enhancing investor security

    and sustainable job creation.

We are estimating the cost of the refurbishments

and upgrades at our eight water treatment works to

be approximately R1,3 billion and it will be imple-

mented in a phased approach over the next five years

due to funding allocations on our capital budget.

The water treatment works in question are the

Loerie Water Treatment Works, Churchill, Eland-

sjagt, Nooitgedagt, Linton, Groendal, Springs and the

    Rocklands Water Treatment Works.

This augurs well for our continued provision of

clean and safe drinking water and the augmentation

    of water supply.

The excellent work over a number of years follows

after the Mayoral Committee approved and accepted

theWater Master Plan which forms part of the Water

Services Development Plan and ultimately the munic-

ipalitys Integrated Development Plan in August

    2007, Mfunda said.

THE call from the Greenbushes community for a cem-

etery closer to home received a major boost when the

Mayoral Committee, chaired by Mayor Benson Fihla,

approved a recommendation that vacant landmust be

identified for burials, according to the municipality.

This decision followed after complaints that burial

lots are too far from them since Walmer, Motherwell

and Bethelsdorp are the only current options availa-

    ble to bury loved ones.

    LindilePetuna,ExecutiveDirector ofHumanSettle-

ments, was tasked at the committeemeeting last week

to identify the vacant land within the proximity of the

Greenbushes community and to start with the rezon-

ing process so that the land can be used for burial pur-

    poses.

    A recommendation that theActingExecutiveDirec-

    proved.

    ODETTE KEMP

n BAAIENAAR is die afgelope naweek as

    se toekenningsaand in Centurion oorhan-

    dig.

Die Baai se Baywest-lugskou het ook by

    di geleentheid die African Pilot-toeken-

ning verower, toe dit as die naasbeste lug-

    skou in Afrika aangewys is.

Die eerste plek het aan die Durban-land-

    en-see-skouspel gegaan.

Die Baai het geskitter by die toeken-

nings veral as jy in ag neem dat die Dur-

ban-skou byna R45 miljoen in borgskap ont-

vang het, het dr. Crystal Watson, sameroe-

    Suid-Afrikaanse lugmagmuseum, wat by

die lugskou betrokke is, was in sy noppies

met die toekenning. Ek is baie opgewonde

    s.

Ek reken as ons die lugskou by die see

kon hou soos hulle by die skou in Durban

maak sal ons teen lugskoue wreldwyd

    kan meeding.

Sodra di toestel n spersein be-

    HEILIE COMBRINCK

SO, jy dink jywt hoe n verkeersirkelwerk?

    Is jy seker,wantdiemeestemotorbestuurders

in die Nelson Mandela Metropool is salig on-

reg ry. En die sondebokke dink hulle is reg!

    s polisiewoordvoerder kapt. Johan Rheeder.

Hy het n byna onaangename onderonsie

ervaar by n enkelbaan-sirkel in HF Ver-

    woerd-rylaan op Despatch. n Vrouebestuur-

der het hom geskel omdat hy volgens haar

nie weet hoe n sirkel werk nie. Sy was

aangery kom.

    groter dubbelbaan-sirkels.Meeste van die sir-

kels in Port Elizabeth in enkelbaan-sirkels.

So, eerste daar kan eerste

ry. By dubbelbaan-sirkels geld die rel dat

aankomende voertuie van die regterkant af,

    moet ryvoorgang geniet.

    Enkelbaansirkels/Minisirkels:

    kalmeer

Dit is uitkenbaarmet die omgekeerde rooi

    en wit toegee-padteken waarop aangedui

    word dat verkeer kloksgewys beweeg

    Aankomende motoriste moet spoed ver-

    of regs kom)

    Dubbelbaansirkels:

Di sirkels kom gewoonlik in stede voor

    of by besige vierrigting-aansluitings

Aankomende verkeer moet stadiger ry en

ryvoorgang gee aan voertuie wat van die

    regterkant af die sirkel inry

Indien van bane binne die sirkel verwissel

word, moet flikkerligte te alle tye gebruik

    word

    Vir maklik onthou:

Enkelbaan-sirkels: eerste daar - eerste ry

Dubbelbaan-sirkels: regs ry - links bly

    Verkeersirkels jaagmotoriste sebloeddrukop

    ; Enkelbaanverkeersirkels werk soos n

vierrigtingstop, die motor wat eerste die sirkel

inry geniet ryvoorgang.

verkeer van regs af voorkeur geniet geld nie by

    enkelbaansirkels nie. FOTO: VERSKAF

The Zone 6 competition includes annual games

in the gymnastic disciplines of aerobics, mens

and nwomens artistic, rhythmic, and trampo-

line. Gymnasts from across the continent will

compete from Sunday, December 7 until Satur-

    day, December 13.

Dyna is elated about her inclusion in the SA

team after she competed against 43 other girls

at the SA National Championships in Cape

    Town in October.

The Charlo Primary school athlete received

her colours after coming in 7th for Free dance,

9th for Hoop, 6th for Ball, 4th for Rope and 4th

in the overall games with only 0.5 between the

first and the fourth overall points.

I am very excited to be competing in the

games. Its been a lot of hard work and I am

proud of where I am today with the help of my

    coach, said Dyna.

    Hercoach,ShantellDidloff,who trains 80 stu-

Dyna to be recognised in the competition. Dy-

na is a very dedicated athlete and this is a dem-

onstration of her work. She started her rhyth-

mic gymnastics three years ago and has been

a very good student ever since, said Didloff.

ITS exciting times for an Arcadia family as

their child was chosen to attend the Oprah

Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls on a

    full scholarship.

Abigail Jacobs is floating on cloud nine (as

she puts it) at the prospect that she will be at-

tending one of themost prestigious schools in

the country, funded by international icon Op-

    rah Winfrey.

Jacobs, who is currently a Grade 5 pupil at

Triomf Primary School, will be leaving for

    Henley-on-Klip,southofJohannesburg,where

the school is located, in January next year.

I couldnt believe it when my mother re-

ceived a letter of acceptance. It is an amazing

opportunity for me. I have always wanted to

attend a Model C school and I am happy that

Iwill be able to exploremy full potential at the

    school.

Jacobs first learnt about the scholarship

    fromherauntwhohadvisited theschool earli-

er this year and informed her mother.

My aunt said she knew that this would be

an amazing opportunity forme and she insist-

    ed that I apply.

Jacobsmother, Griselle, said her childs ac-

    ceptance to theschool cameata timewhenshe

    hadbeenretrenchedfromher job,andwithon-

ly one income from her husband David, it

would have been a struggle to enrol their

    daughter into a multiracial school.

This not only means my child will receive

the best education in the country and open

doors for her in the future but its also a huge

weight lifted from our shoulders. Because her

school life will be fully paid for, we now can

concentrate on saving for her university fees

    andthiswillbeagreathelpforusasthefamily,

    said Griselle.

    Jacobs,whohasreceivedanumberofawards

while attending Triomf, said she owed her ac-

    complishments to her teachers.

My school has been amazing. The teachers

are dedicated and because of the workwe do at

my school, I was able to pass all the admission

tests with no challenge, she added.

    CURRO Westbrook school participated in

their first major charity event on October 25

at the Big Walk for Cancer, which took place

    at The Boardwalk.

The school was eager to celebrate the Na-

tional Cupcake day for Cancer which was

held on September 27; however theywere un-

able to do so as the event fell within the

    school holidays.

Cupcakes were sold at the Big Walk for

Cancer at R5 each and all the profits were do-

nated to the Igazi Foundation for Cancer. All

the Curro learners were enthusiastic and ea-

ger to sell their cupcakes and many walkers

    found thebeautifully decorated standand the

lure of a breakfast treat too good to resist.

Walkerswere rewardedwith a little extra en-

ergy to complete the 5km course.

It iswith great pleasure and an openheart

that we hand over the money we raised

(R1271) to the Igazi Foundation, said Grade

R Educator at CurroWestbrook, Melissa Vil-

    joen.

The school would like to thank everybody

    who supported the cupcake stall.

Curro Westbrook is very privileged and

honoured to be associated with this wonder-

ful charity event and we hope that we can be-

come more involved in the future.

    OPENON SUNDAYS!

    REPORTER

AFTER a year of fundraising, Varsity Col-

lege Port Elizabeth will open a mobile li-

brary and media centre at Heatherbank Pri-

    mary School tomorrow, November 13.

The school, which is an NPO for under-

    privileged children from the Walmer

Township, will receive the library as part

of Varsity Colleges 2014 Corporate Social

    Initiative.

    Heatherbank Primary School currently

educates, feeds and transports 48 children

    daily.

    VicePrincipal of Student Support atVar-

    sity College Port Elizabeth, Catherine

Louw, said, An exciting year of fundrais-

ing in collaboration with the Masixhasane

Literacy Project has enabled us to provide

Heatherbank Primary School with a mo-

    bile library unit. Fundraising initiatives

both on and off the Varsity College campus

were held in order to provide the school

with the library unit which contains five

    hundred books, a flat screenTV,DVDplay-

er and twenty five educational videos.

    The learners at Heatherbank Primary

range between the ages of three and six and

all of the resources mentioned above will

be age appropriate. Varsity College, in

    collaboration with the Masixhasane Liter-

acy Project, is committed to eradicating il-

literacies within SA as we strongly believe

    that through education communities can

be uplifted with one child at a time. This has

been a fulfilling adventure which needed the

support and commitment of many people in

order to be a success, said Louw.

Varsity College said the highlight of their

    fundraising initiativeswas a successful com-

edy show, Whole Lotta Laughs which was

presented by Centrestage and featured the

popular comedian Gino Fabbri with his side

kick Alida Senekal. All who supported this

event contributed to raising funds to provide

Heatherbank with the mobile library unit.
