ith as many as 4 000 fewer
teachers in front of the black-
board in Eastern Cape
schools in 2016, the teaching
prospects for the province
seem bleak, according to experts and unions.
Principals in Port Elizabeth received let-
ters last week in which notice was given that
they would have to cope with asmany as nine
teachers less at their schools.
TheEasternCapeDepartment of Education
(EDoE) cut teaching posts with 1049 of 55 796
to 54 747 in September.
The EDoE pre-final list of how these posi-
tions will be used in schools next year, shows
that only about 50 000 teachers will be placed
in front of the blackboard.
The other 4 747 positions are allegedly
saved for possible needs that might emerge
at schools.
According to the EDoE, this decision does
not form part of its job cuts, but simply be-
cause schools, according to principals infor-
mation, are not in need of these posts.
These lists are not final, saidMaliMtima,
provincial spokesperson. If principals are
dissatisfiedwith thedistribution theycandis-
cuss it with us.

SOWAT 180 Oos-Kaapse raadslede en ge-
meenskapsleiers sal hulle opnuut met vaar-
dighede toerus om die Oos-Kaap se menslike
nedersettingsake te hanteer.
Helen Sauls-August, hoof van di departe-
ment in die Oos-Kaap, het Sondag kortter-
myn-leerprogramme in menslike nederset-
ting by die Nelson Mandela Metropolitaanse
Universiteit (NMMU) bekend gestel.
Die eerste klomp raadslid-studente het
Maandag hier hul eerste les in volhoubare
nedersettingsbestuur, boubestuur, grondbe-
leid,wetgewing enprojekbestuurvir openba-
re amptenare bygewoon.
Sauls-August meen di loodsprogram is
Di leerprogram is n ingeperkteweergawe
vandieNMMUseBA-graadkursus inmensli-
ke nedersetting wat verlede jaar ingelyf is.
Sauls-August hoop om di graadkursus
ook by ander universiteite in die provinsie
in te stel.
Die Fort Hare-Universiteit begin reeds
volgende jaar hiermee. Die idee is om kundi-
ges in di rigting op te lei.
Die departement van menslike nederset-
ting is n noodsaaklikheid in enige regering
en dis tyd dat ons wegspringmet programme
wat ons n voorsprong b ander sal gee, het
sy ges.

Edmund van Vuuren, DA spokesperson
on education, said the EDoE had over-
played its hand this time.
I am very concerned about the effect
that this latest decision will have on the
morale of our teachers. I can foresee that
staff tearooms and principals offices will
become battle groundswith teachers fight-
ing to retain their jobs. I would recom-
mend that principals write to the MEC to
give reasons why their numbers should
not be cut. We were hoping that the in-
crease in the education budget of R1-bil-
lion, from R20, 6-billion in 2015/16 to R21,
6-billion in 2016/17 would have allowed for
the appointment of more teachers, he
said.
The learner-enrolment in the province
increased from 1,8 million in 2014 to 1,89
million in 2015. Learner enrolment is ex-
pected to increase further in 2016.
Tradeunionsareparticularlyconcerned
about the number of pupils that increase
annually and what the increase will mean
for teachers in the classroom.
The distribution list is set according to
the so-called Morkel model. The Depart-
ment of Education collects schools infor-
mation through the year, including the
number of teachers, students and subjects.
These figures decide howmany teachers a
school needs.
The model usually works very well,
said Jan Stroebel, principal of Framesby
High School and chairman of the SouthAf-
rican Teachers Union (SATU) in the East-
ern Cape.
The problem is that the weights of
teachers, pupils and subjects this year
were shared by fewer teachers. What will
happen now is that schools teacher-to-pu-
pil ratio will be higher - whichwill dish up
its own problems.
Sindisile Zamisa, South African Demo-
cratic Teachers Union spokesperson, sup-
ports Stroebels concerns.
By reducing the number of posts, it is
doubtful that we will have a teacher in ev-
ery classroom, he said. It seems as if the
education officials want our teachers to
fail. Many schools are already battling
with over crowded classrooms. I dont see
how having fewer teachers at schools will
help education in our cities.

THEre-introductionofweldingasasubject from
next year has received a major boost with fund-
ing, equipment and training fromAfrox,merSE-
TA andNMMUat four technical high schools in
Nelson Mandela Bay.
NMMU,Afrox andmerSETA agreed to jointly
improve welding at the four technical high
schools in the Nelson Mandela metropolitan ar-
ea.
The primary objective of this project is to as-
sist the Eastern Capes Department of Educa-
tion, NMMU and the merSETA to re-capitalise
current technical schools in support of the re-in-
troductionofweldingasasubject fromnextyear.
The programme was launched at Westview
High School recently and the occasion was at-
tended by various dignitaries from Afrox,
NMMU, merSETA and the four schools.
The schools that benefit from the agreement
are Westview, Kwezi Lomzo Comprehensive,
Gelvandale and McCarthy Street Secondary in
Uitenhage.
Approximately R1,2-million was made availa-
ble by Afrox Pty Ltd for the four schools, which
included the supply ofAfroxwelding equipment
and products.
The welding equipment included Mig and
MMAweldingmachines, gaswelders and Porta-
Paks. In addition to the supply of hardware, the
merSETA chair in engineering development at
NMMU provided funding for accredited Afrox
training for two teachers per school as well as
a department representative.
Welding is a specialised field under the sub-
ject of mechanical technology in technical high
schools and re-capitalising them will go a long
way in preparing pupils for careers in weld-
ing,saidChristoBasson,merSETAseniorman-
ager ETQA and partnerships.
Eachof the schoolswasassistedby themerSE-
TA, Afrox and NMMU to ensure that their labo-
ratory facilities were adequately prepared in or-
der to meet industry safety requirements. Ap-
propriate storage facilities, fume extraction,
power supplies, welding bays and eye protection
amenitieswere fittedat theschools thatrequired
them.
Safety is an important aspect of welding and
all teachers must attend the Afrox safety train-
ing before using the equipment.
Pupil training will be provided by educators
whohavebeentrainedandcertifiedas trainers,
said Johan Pieterse, business manager, Manu-
facturing Industries MPG.
Education in engineering is an expensive ex-
cercise, but this collaboration has provided the
four schoolswith equipment that canyield skills
to prepare pupils for tertiary studies, said Karl
du Preez, merSETA chair in engineering devel-
opment at NMMU. REPORTER

I would like to thank healer Diba for solving my
financial, marriage, work, business and family
problems that I suffered for over 5years. I had
bad financial record and struggling to pay my
and other accounts. Putting food on the table
was also problem sometimes if I get my salary. It
went through my hands and then I sit with
nothing. My marriage was also falling apart. We
used to shout at each other at home. My elder
son was on drugs. I was totally confused and
stressed, luckily one day my friend at work told
me about the powerful man (Dr Diba) the next
day I phoned him for help and advice. Diba took
my name, age and gave me supper magic flower

SLAGGATE wat motorbande
vreet is nie n vreemde
prentjie in die Baai nie, maar
inwoners wil weet waarvoor
betaal hulle belasting as hulle
die geld kon gebruik om nuwe
motorbande te koop.
Dit is nou al bykans ses
maande dat ons vir diemunisi-
paliteit wag om n donga in
Morningside reg te maak. Ons
meld dit aan, maar die een de-
partement n die ander was sy
hande in onskuld, en die slag-
gat bly oop, het Shirley Sauls,
raadslid vir wyk 12, ges.
Volgens Mthubanzi Mniki,
munisipale woordvoerder,
word slaggate gewoonlik tus-
sen 24 uur en vier werksdae n
aanmelding herstel.
Die besiger paaie word ge-
woonlik binne 24 uur n aan-
melding herstel, terwyl die
minder besige paaie binne
twee of vier werksdae herstel
word, het Mniki ges.
Maar die donga in Groendal-
rylaan wat volgens Sauls ge-
grawe is om nwaterpyp te her-
stel l steeds soos n slagyster
en wag vir motorbande.
Waarvoor betaal ons belas-
ting as die paaie nie herstel
word nie? wou Sauls weet.
Ook Johan Coetzer, n sake-
man inMarkman, s hulle wag
reeds vierweke vir diemunisi-
paliteit om n slaggat wat min-
stens 30 cm diep is te herstel.
Di slaggat in Buickstraat was
glo eers twee aparte gate, maar
het onlangs as een groot gat
saamgesmelt.
Die motors moet op die sy-
paadjies ry om nie n band af
te skryf nie, het Coetzer ges.
Mniki het in reaksie ges dat
meer slaggatewel nou tewagte
is weens die afgelope tyd se
ren en die ouderdom van se-
kere paaie.
Hy het ook ges die munisi-
paliteit het geen kontrak in
plek omdie slaggate te laat reg-
maak nie, en dat munisipale
werkers self vir die herstel van
slaggate uitgestuur word.
Motoriste wat wel skade
weens n slaggat opdoen, kan
hul eise volgens Mniki by die
munisipaliteit se regsdirekto-
raat indien.

CHRIS Bester received his 275th blood dona-
tionmilestoneawardduringthePortElizabeth
donoraward function thatwasheldonNovem-
ber 4.
He worked as a volunteer at Baragwanath
Hospital in Soweto around the early 1950s.
Duringhis timeat this
hospital, he expe-
rienced horrific
trauma scenes
and the chal-
lenge of not
having
access to suf-
ficient blood,
and the loss of
lifeasaresult.
These scenes made a lasting impression on
Chris and it highlighted the importance of
blood donation.
A couple of years later, he finally signed up
as a blood donor in Pretoria, with a friend. As
a blood donor, he knew that his blood group
was O positive, compatible with all other rhe-
sus positive blood groups.
Chris worked in Malawi for two years
around 1969 and 1970 at Telkom on a contract.
During his stay he visited a hospital in the
north, in a small village called Livingstonia.
He is not quite sure why he ended up at this
hospital, but looking back, he believes that he
was meant to be there. There was quite a bit
of commotionin thehospitalandChrisbecame
aware that there was a patient in labour who
needed ablood transfusion.He approached the
Irish doctor, whoworked there as a volunteer,
and agreed to be a blood donor for this patient
since he knew he is O positive.
The doctor then arranged for a direct trans-
fusion and the patient and her baby survived.
This gave him a great sense of relief and
pride that he was able to make a difference. It
stood out as his fondest memory with regard
to blood donation.
I never realized that I would be able to do-
nate so many units of blood as it was never
about themilestones. Forme it is about being
privileged enough to be healthy in order to
make a difference, Bester said.
Headded thatblooddonationallowsone the
opportunity to be involved with the people
around you and that it saves lives.
Although you will never meet the patient
who used your blood, the sense of knowing
that youaremakingadifference, is a precious
thought and feeling whichmakes blood dona-
tion so rewarding.

Its really a mission trip,
Brookes said.
We travel the world to pre-
ach the Gospel to old and yo-
ung, but at the end we are the
people who learn from this les-
son. In the Bay we learned: Home-
less share their little food with each
other; the blind laugh as if they can see
the world perfectly, and children show
love for stranger and friend shamelessly.
According to Brookes, they have merged
with a charity organisation in every country
and so carried out their mission work.
For their month-long pitstop in Port Elizabeth,
they work under the auspices of Love Story, a non-
profit organization caring for children and the home-
less.
The group visited the Green Apple daycare centre
in KwaZakhele on Thursday.
Here the kids showed the travellers how to wiggle
their bottoms to the beat of African music and how one
should perform the Bible story of Daniel in the lions den.
This daycare centre, where 160 children learn, eat and play
daily, is managed by Jesse Nkohla from her home.
I think its good that the team popped in by us so that the chil-
dren can learn that there is more to the world than the township.
Imyselfwould notmove away fromhere becausemyheart lieswith
thechildrenofKwaZakhele, buthopefully thereare seedsplanted that
will help broaden their horizons, she said.

ODETTE KEMP
INTERNATIONALLY, Africa is known as a
continent of corruption and poverty, but a
woman from Port Elizabeth plans to replace
this perspective with a message of hope.
Nozibele Qamngana, communications
manager of the Ubuntu Education Fund in
Zwide, has been selected to debate African
stereotypes at the Africa in Norway confer-
ence, to be held in Oslo later this month. The
conference is aimed at changing perspectives
of countries in the south.
Qamngana, who will be the only speaker
from Africa, is already bursting to speak at
the conference.
Such opportunities are always chances for
us at Ubuntu to be an example of hope and
to spread the idea that impossible is indeed
amyth, she said. Our work is about impact
rather than numbers, and we appreciate the
chance to tell our countrys success stories.
Qamngana already has a few lessons to
their independence three decades ago to
those who have worked on their economies
for hundreds of years.
She would rather focus on the continents
positive stories. People think our women
are oppressed, but it has been noted that
Rwanda has the highest number of female
parliamentarians in the world, while all over
the continent women sit in positions of high
power.
There are toomanynegative stories about
Africa. We want to spread the message of
ubuntu, because we can only change lives if
we work together.

On the day they played against

dampen the boys spirit and they
were victorious with a score of 6-2.
Other matches include three
against the university students at
Meliksah University and the final
scores were 3-0; 5-0 and 12-11, all in
favour of Nizamiye Al-Azhar Insti-
tute.
The team also played against
South African counterparts - Star
College, a sister school from Cape
Town - who were also in Instanbul.
Nizamiye beat them 6-2.
The boys had a tremendous time
in Turkey and the tour built up
their team morale. After this tour,
they feel like they could beat any
team.
We are very proud of these
boys, said principal Huseyn
Gencel, who accompanied them on
the tour.

THE newly renovated Opera
House is set to kick off its summer
programme with a bang - hosting
two of the worlds biggest tribute
shows in its first weekend re-
opened to the public.
The Greatest Love of All The
Whitney Houston Show andQueen
Its a Kinda Magic, will jet into
the metro for what will be the
formers only South African
dates for the next 12 months.
With very limited seasons in
the Bay there will only be three
performances for each show. For
Queen Its a Kinda Magic -
theres a little PE history to back
up these claims. The last time the
show visited the metro its entire
season was sold out in presale.
Both these shows are huge at
the moment. Whitney is booked
out internationally for the next
three years and Queen is very
close to the same, so there wont
be another chance to see them in
the Bay for awhile, said Director
Johnny Van Grinsven.
While there are obvious differ-
ences in the repertoires for each
show, Van Grinsven assures the
production values are the same.
Both shows are a real spectacle
with all the lighting and effects
and grandeur of a real Whitney or
Queen concert so were looking
forward to bringing all of that to
the refreshed Opera House.
The Greatest Love of All The
Whitney Houston Show will
take place on November 27-29
and Queen Its a Kinda Magic
will take place onNovember 30-
December 2.
Tickets for all performances
are now available from Com-
puticket.
WIN! WIN! WIN!
Two PE Express readers can each win
a double ticket to the performances on
November 27 and November 30. To en-
ter, go the PE Express Newspaper face-

THE Eastern Province Bonsai Societys an-
nual Bonsai Showwill take place at the Sher-
wood Garden Centre, Walker Drive, on No-
vember 21 and 22.
This society is celebrating its 47th year of
existence and is the second-oldest in the
country.
Love, thats what makes a bonsai. Our
love of bonsai has seen the club grow through
the years, said JennyShute of theEPBonsai
Society. A bonsai was not just a pretty little
pot plant. It had taken years of love and care
to grow, she said.
She also said the care of and attention to
the treeswere to be compared to having a pet.
Daily checks for bugs, water and problems
that could occur overnightwerepart andpar-
cel of their lives.
In todays world with many having to
downsize gardens, bonsai was an ideal way
to keep nature within reach.
She said that we in South Africa were the
envy of the world with the wide variety of
trees and shrubs that with skill and know-
howwere turned into wonderful Bonsai. The
wild olives, some 100s of years old according
to the rings on their branches, boerboom,
acacia, wild peach, fire thorn, the mighty
boabab and the spekboom were but a few of
the trees that were used in the Eastern Cape
for the creation of a bonsai.
Growing bonsai is suitable for all ages. The
club is proud of its young members, who are
called acorns. They love to share their hobby
with their friends at school.
At this years show therewill bemore than
100 trees on display and when one considers
that each one is different, they are worth
viewing. There will also be the normal sales
tableswith trees, pots, wire, stands, tools, etc.
Advicewill be given by senior growers. De-
mos on Saturday will be at 11.30am and
2.30pm and Sundays demo will be at 1.30pm.
Doors open from9am to 5pmonSaturday and
9am to 4pm on Sunday. You could be the
lucky raffle ticketwinner of a bonsai tree and
repotting service for a fee. Entrance fee isR20
for adults and R10 for learners. Children un-
der 12 can attend for free.

WITH less than a month to go, the
countdown to Port Elizabeths big-
gest annual Christmasmarket has
begun.
More than 180 exhibitors are
gearing up for Christmas in the
Home, which is expected to draw
around 15 000 visitors over four
days from November 26.
The seasonal gift and craft fair
will once again turn the exhibi-
tion level of The Boardwalk Hotel
into a veritable Santas workshop
filled with present ideas ranging
from speciality foods and deli
treats to home dcor, toys, bou-
tique-style clothing and accesso-
ries.
Coordinator Elsje Smuts of
Trueblue Communication and
Events said her organising team
was looking forward to presenting
the 14th edition of what has be-
come a PE institution.
The challenge for us is always
to maintain the quality and origi-
nality that has become the hall-
mark of Christmas in the Home,
said Smuts.
And our stallholders have once
again delivered some wonderful
treasures that you simply wont
find in a shop. Marketgoers are in
for a treat!
With giving at the heart of the
festivities, she said no one exem-
plified this better than 11-year-old
stallholder Rebecca Roche.
The Clarendon Park Primary
School pupil and budding author
will be selling copies of her book,
Pango Finds His True Family, in
aid of the Animal Welfare Society.
The beautifully illustrated
book, which is aimed at 4 to 12-
year-olds, tells the story of a stray
puppy who finds a home and hap-
piness. All proceeds from the sale
of the book will be given to AWS.
What Rebecca has done is so
special that we decided to sponsor
her a stall so that more pets will
benefit from her generosity, said
Smuts.
The Ubuntu Education Fund,
which assists orphaned and vul-
nerable children, will be another
beneficiary stallholder.
Smuts saidMakro had also come
on board by contributing recycled
shopping bags, which would be
available at the entrance at a cost
of R10 each, with all monies donat-
ed to charity.
The paypoint this year will be
manned by the Lions Club and we
will be making a donation to their
community work after the event,
she added.
The market will offer extended
trading hours of 9am to 8pm from
the Thursday to Saturday, and
draws to a close at 4pm on the Sun-
day. Entrance costs R20 per per-
son.

cebook. Alternatively, phone Els-
je on 082 873 7663 or email els-

IT was like going back in time.
Back to a timewhenwewere told
to be in bed at eight oclock or he
wouldnt come because he sees
you when youre sleeping, he
knows when youre awake so be
good for goodness sake!
Shrouded in a cloud ofmystery
with papers covering the win-
dows to keep peeping toms out,
they (the Christmas elves) were
hard at work unpacking the lat-
est in Christmas decor and this
seasons must-have trees.
I for one couldnt wait to see
what all the fuss had been about;
what was so special about this
Christmas Shop that had popped
up in Port Elizabeth for approxi-
mately three months every year
for the past 17 years.
They had been everywhere in
Port Elizabeth, from Walker
Drive Shopping Centre to Moffet
on Main, and this year they are
poppingupatWalmerPark shop-
ping centre (just follow the drop-
dead gorgeous Christmas trees
inside the shopping centre and
you will find this magical little
shop, next to NuMetro).
Yeah, so this shop this year
might not be as big as we all
know it to be, but believe youme,
when I say that no expense has
been spared, no bauble left un-
wrappedandno treenot properly
fluffed to make your insides go
warm and fuzzy.
And then still it will take you
back to the days when you as a
kid left the cookies and milk out
for Santa even though your
house didnt have a chimney.
When you went to bed at 8pm so
that Santa couldmagically climb
down the chimney that you for-
got you didnt have.
To Evy, Maria, Mark, Audette,
Michelle, Vusi, Derek and Cap-
tain and everybody else involved
in bringing the Christmas magic
to Port Elizabeth on a yearly ba-
sis, thank you and may you al-
ways spread Christmas cheer
and fun in everything you do!
