WHILE the Municipality is stillengaging with the representa-tivesof strikingworkersof thelibrary and traffic administra-tion departments, scholars,

especially matrics, are facing the possibilitythat they will not have access to libraries forstudying during the holidays next week.

The municipal management have this weekagainexpressed their commitment to continueengaging with the workers and also to empha-sise the importance of going back to work asthe strikes are illegal andmight have negativeimplications on all parties involved.“Unfortunately the situation has led to a to-

tal shut down of our libraries - a situation thatis regrettable indeed, taking into considera-tion the time of the year,” said MunicipalSpokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki.Mniki said there have been no resolutions

taken by council because of the unavailabilityof councillors from some opposition partieswithin council. “A full council has not sat forthe last scheduleddays due to theunavailabili-ty of councillors from opposition parties,” hesaid.The DA said in a statement, however, that

theywouldnot bebullied into taking illegal de-cisions by the ANC or its affiliates.DA Councillor, Leon De Villiers, said two

weeks ago municipal staff attempted to holdCouncil hostage to their demands at a SpecialCouncil meeting that was to be convened todeal with, among other items, the election ofward committees and the salary increases forlibrary and traffic staff.De Villiers said, “These critical items re-

quire robust debate in Council; however, dueto the threat of yet another invasion of Councilbyunionmembersand the inevitable financialimplications of passing some items, the meet-ing was postponed by the chief Whip of Coun-cil.“The salary increases for traffic wardens

and library staff have not been evaluated inline with the TASK job evaluation tool that

seeks to normalize pay grades throughout theinstitution,” said De Villiers.He said the DA had been calling for the im-

plementation of the TASK system for yearsand noted with concern that Nelson MandelaBaywas theonlyMetro in thecountry thatwas

not using this system.“Should the positions not be graded using

the TASK system and the employees giventheir increases, this will set a precedent andsee a flood of increased wage demands and awave of labour unrest from other municipal

staff.Ourposition is clear: implement theTaskSystem so we can budget accordingly and payour staff what they deserve,” he added.De Villiers said there would be another

council meeting tomorrow (Thursday) but thestrike would not be tabled on the agenda.

TWOyoung ballroomdancers fromMother-well LuthandoMatole (16) and OthandwayoGqamane (13) have been invited to repre-sent the country at the Times Cup Interna-tional dance competition to be held in Tai-wan in September next year.

They were selected after they won firstplace in the ballroom category at the re-cent National Dance Arts Festival in CapeTown. Making this achievement evengreater is that Othandwayo only startedballroom dancing in February this year.

Othandwayo, a grade 8 pupil at Ithembe-lihle High School,was the youngest dancerat the event. “It was my debut at a dancecompetition as I started dancing in Febru-ary this year. Music makes dancing enjoy-able for me. They played my favouritesongs. I was just enjoying the music andstayed focused and calm,” she said.

Her dancing partner. Luthando, is agrade 10 pupil at Douglas Mbopa HighSchool.

“It was extremely cold in Cape Town, butwe did it. What motivated me was the mu-sic they played. They played songs that Iused to listen to during my debut dancepractice way back in 2011. So the music re-minded me of where I was coming from,and where I was now dancing at,” he said.

Their coach, Thembinkosi Ndoni (38),founder of the Ndoni Dance Art Academy,is also the director of Eastern Cape Crea-tive Art.

“I always dreamed of competing at inter-national level. But since I didn’t make it,I vowed that one day I would train kids to

make my dream a reality!”“In May this year, two dancers from my

stable also competed in England. In Decem-ber last year, two of my students danced atthe World Dance Council in France. Over-seas dancers beat us with speed. The spiritof dance overseas is very high. But we arenearly getting there.”

After becoming the only Idols contestant inthe top-16 from the Metro, Williams said shewas looking forward tomakingher cityproud.“I still can’t believe that I am part of SA’s

coolest and biggest TV show. Being here hastaught me so much about the industry, andabout music in general,” said Williams.Williams, who matriculated from Linkside

High School in 2010, said she was currentlyworkingwith talented artists such as R.J Ben-jamin.“It’s even more amazing being around such

humble fellow contestantswhoare so passion-ate about music, just as I am,” she said.Williams said she started singing at the age

of 11, and participated in many competitions.She recentlywent to her old high school and

performed for the students during her time in

PE, before continuing with the competition.“I love being able to make a difference in peo-ple’s lives. I grew up surrounded by a familyof musicians, so music was just all I knew,”she added.“I feel like I’m so close tomydream, so close

to the top, that I just can’t fall out now. I’vegot to give it my all. You never know whereIdols can take you, orwhowill notice you, butyou can bet, someone will. No matter the out-come, I will keep on climbing until I reachmydream.”Williams thanked PE residents for their

jog, walkers walk and cyclists cycle. We havegrown into a safe neighbourhoodwherewe can

rely on the responseof ourpatrol officer andve-hicle in under one-and-a-half minutes. We canrequest that he accompany us home and seethat all iswellwhen returninghomeafter dark.The patrol officer will even shadow a tripthrough the area on request.”Krige added that another benefit of the CSS

was the email database through which resi-dents could communicate with each other on arangeof topics or issues affecting the communi-ty,including events, lost pets and employmentopportunities.“We also have regular meetings with ADT

THEODOR Herzl High School has won the regional roundof the Eastern Cape Department of Economic Development,Environmental Affairs and Tourism (DEDEAT) Environ-mental Awards 2013.

The Port Elizabeth school won R20 000 to put towards anenvironmental initiative, and will represent Cacadu at theProvincial finals on 17 September, where schools will be vy-ing for the top prize of R100 000.

The annual DEDEAT Environmental competition isaimed at encouraging schools to improve the state of the en-vironment by using resources sustainably. It also giveslearners an opportunity to participate actively in resolvingenvironmental issues.

Ten schools from the CACADU region presented their re-search and portfolio of work to judges at the KwamagxakiCommunity Hall, including representatives from the DE-DEAT, Bayworld, the Born Free Foundation and WESSA(Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa).

“This is the first time that Theodor Herzl’s Eco Club hastaken part in this competition, so we were really excited to

win!” said Thabang Mabula, Grade 10.The competition’s key topic for high schools this year is

“Renewable Energy options a solution to Eastern Cape pov-erty”. Participants were assessed according to criteriawhich included subject knowledge, originality, presenta-tion, relevance and creativity.

“Our presentation included our club’s three themes for2013 – resource use, nature and biodiversity, and heritageand culture. We explored both the problems and the solu-tions involved in each of the different power types used inthe Eastern Cape at the moment, from Eskom to windfarms,” Thabang said.

“Wealsopresentedthe judgeswithoneofourexcitingnewprojects this year: the life-saving warmth that can be gener-ated by blankets made from recycled, silver foil chip pack-ets,” Thabang added

Theodor Herzl has achieved international status as an en-vironmentally aware ‘Green Flag’ school. Its projects in-cludewaste collections for recycling, planting of sustainableindigenous plants like spekboom to reduce its carbon foot-print, beachcleanups, andcreative ‘upcycling’ projects suchas turning empty tin cans into neck bells for lambs to wardoff predators.

NELSON Mandela Metropolitan Universi-ty has been selected to host the three-dayopening leg of the inaugural Varsity Net-ball series, which starts in Port Elizabeththis Saturday (September 21).

The action-packed series, which drawsits inspiration from the popular VarsityCup rugby, will see eight tertiary institu-tions competing in a fast-paced, made-for-television format.NMMU journalism student Dumisane

Chauke will captain the SPAR-Madibazside as they take on the University of Jo-hannesburg, University of Cape Town andStellenbosch University in the initialround-robin competition.Chauke, who was named goal shooter of

the tournament at the SouthAfrican seniorchampionships last month, will lead astrong attack alongside former Protea cen-tre Mampho Tsotetsi.The home team will also present a solid

defence, spearheaded by masters studentand goalkeeper Zanele Vimbela. Vimbelawas part of the national squad that took sil-ver in the World University Netball Cham-pionships in Cape Town last year.According toSPAR-Madibaznetballman-

ager Theresa le Roux, spectators could look

forward to high quality netball, as the uni-versities’ senior national players would beavailable for most of the six-week series.She said the home team expected strong

competition from the likes of UJ and Mat-ies on the opening weekend.Le Roux said one of the highlights would

be the introduction of the two-minute pow-er play. “Each team gets a chance to calla random power play and any goals scoredduring that time will count two points in-stead of one.”Aside from some exciting netball, she

said audiences could also look forward toa festive atmosphere, with lots of crowdparticipation and sponsored giveawaysduring the breaks.Le Roux said the action would take place

at theMissionvale campus on the Saturdayand Sunday, with matches starting at 2pmand 3.30pm.The teams then move to the university’s

South Campus for the live TV broadcast onthe Monday night, where UJ will take onMaties in the first game at 6pm andNMMUwill face off against UCT at 7.30pm.Le Roux said her institution would also

host two televised play-offs on September30 and October 14.Tickets are free of charge and available

Sy en haar spanmaat, Zoe Kruger vanGauteng-Noord, het uitstekend gevaar om’n algehele derde plek in die toernooi te be-haal.Topspelers van verskeie lande het meege-

ding in die toernooi. Dit was die eerste keerdat Suid-Afrikaanse tennisspelers genooi isom aan die Coupe Le Blanc deel te neem.Trevor van Onselen, Carli se pa, het gesê

hierdie prestasie is uitsonderlik,want ditwasCarli se eerste toernooi wat sy op kleibanegespeel het.Volgens Carli was die toernooi ’n wonder-

like ervaring en sy het gesê dat dit ’n voorregwas om erkenning te geniet as een van diewêreld se beste junior tennisspelers.“Dit was goed om te ervaar wat die stan-

daard van die wêreld se beste o.12-spelers isen om hulle op ’n persoonlike vlak te kon leerken. Die Kanadese leefstyl is wonderlik!” hetsy vertel.Carli het as driejarige tennis begin speel.

Sedert haar gr. 1-jaar by die Laerskool Sun-ridge was sy in die eerste tennisspan inge-sluit.In 2008 het sy saam met die eerste span na

Paarl getoer om deel te neem aan die Na-sionale Gerrie Berner-tennistoernooi. Hierwas sy die jongste tennisspeler ooit wat aandie toernooi deelgeneem het. Sy het ook dieprys ontvang vir die mees belowende ten-nisspeler.Vanaf vyfjarige ouderdom het sy begin

deelneem aan SATA-tennistoernooie.

In Desember 2012 het sy die kwart-eindronde in twee afsonderlike internasionaletoernooie, wat in Maleisië aangebied is, ge-haal. Sy het ook SA-skole tenniskleure ver-werf in 2012 en 2013.Carli het gesê sy kry baie ondersteuning

van haar ouers, Trevor en Hantie. Sy speelgraag tennis saam met haar pa, maar wordprofessioneel afgerig deur Pieter-UysBarnard.Haar droom is om eendag die wêreld se

nommer 1-vrouetennisspeler te wees en omGrand Slam-titels te wen.Alhoewel sy daagliks tennis-afrigting kry,

maak sy ook tyd vir netbal en drama. Boonopis Carli nie net blitsig op die tennisbaan nie,maar ook op die atletiekbaan waar sy ’nprovinsiale naelloper is.

the term “robbed” is often used. There’s no such inten-tion here. The All Blacks, under normal circumstances,were probably just fractionally the better side.So what are we talking about here? Look back, if you

will, to the openingparagraphand theword“crazy”.Whywas it used?The reason is that rugby, at this critical stageof its age-old development, should consider taking a leafout of Test cricket’s book and extend its use of the TMOreferral system.Why not allow opposing captains the right of three ap-

peals during the course of an international? Then theTMO, the referee, who might have been unsighted any-way, and the captain appealing against the decision,would get the opportunity of reaching an equitable valua-tion of the contentious moment.In the case if the Eden Park fiasco it has to be said the

French official lost his head. His yellow card for rampantSpringbok hooker, Bismarck du Plessis, for a textbookshoulder-high tackle on flyhalf Dan Carter, clearlyshowed the tackle was not high or late. But it earned a

yellow card and 10 minutes in the sin-bin. This occurredroughly halfway through the first half. Returning, DuPlessis soon scored the Boks’ first try.But less than two minutes after the break, Du Plessis

was again yellow carded – the two yellows becoming ared, and banishment to the sidelines for the rest of thegame, which reduced his 80 minutes on the pitch to lessthan half-an-hour. Watched closely in slow motion thehandoff by thehooker in the second incident on loose-for-ward Liam Meesom was certainly not “dirty”.Because of the speed at which the All Black came at

him, Du Plessis had no time to straighten his arm for afull hand-off, with the result that his forearm (perhaps)came in contact with theNewZealander’s throat. Nowaycould it have been intentional. Indeed, so quickly did theAll Black recover, it looked suspiciously like the playertrying to “milk” a penalty.It should be noted here that through referee Poite’s

meddling and two more yellow cards, this time to AllBlacks (was he trying to even things out?) reduced thegame as a 15-a-side contest to less than half-an-hour.Former Springbok coach, NickMallett, now a TV com-

mentator, blew his top, calling the decisions on Du Ples-sis “an absolute disgrace” and “ridiculous”. Test refereeJonathan Kaplan, known for his quiet, considered opin-ions, said simply: “Farcical”. Welsh flyhalf JonathonDavies tweeted: “What a disgraceful yellow card. Greattackle!”So, yes, why doesn’t rugby take a leaf out of cricket’s

referral procedures? Anyway, no need to panic, there’splenty of rugby to play and Boks can still pull off a Super-Rugby triumph!

THE Formula 1 paddock has departed fromthe European continent for the final time inthe 2013 season. Now the final pushes towardschampionship glory, towards a race seat fornext year, or towards a few extra points’ be-gin. The final stretch of the calendar beginswith Singapore’s Marina Bay circuit, roundthirteen of the championship.

The initial announcement of Formula 1 un-der floodlights, which was met with scepti-cism and questions about a spectacle of suchproportions, was nevertheless within therealms of possibility.

It became a reality in 2008 as Formula 1 setoff for Singapore and its floodlit city streets.Images of gleaming bodywork, glowing ex-hausts and city skylines quickly became aspectacle worthy of the greatest motorsportseries in the world.

Singapore still feels relatively new to theFormula 1 calendar but in reality has been apart of the yearly roundabout since 2008 andhas already had its fair share of controversy.

The inaugural race, won by Renault’s Fern-ando Alonso, was plunged into a controversywhich was dubbed Crashgate - as team princi-pal of Renault Flavio Briatore ordered Brazil-ian driver Nelson Piquet Jr. to deliberatelycrash and force the deployment of the safetycar.

The intentional crash was arranged in or-der to provide Fernando Alonso with an ad-vantage by making an early pitstop.

Since then it has been thankfully contro-versy-free and filled with memorable racevictories.

It comes as no surprise that Red Bull andSebastian Vettel seem to excel on the Singa-pore streets. The German has taken the lasttwo victories and shares the distinction oftwo race wins around these parts with Fern-ando Alonso.

Lewis Hamilton won the 2009 edition of therace and could be a favourite to repeat the featthis weekend.

As street circuits tend to go they share somesimilarities amongst each other; it’s no differ-ent for Monaco and Singapore. Although thestreets of Monte Carlo are not quite as in-tensely laid out as the Marina Bay circuit itcan be considered an indicator. It is in thisset of circumstances that Mercedes foundthemselves leading the pack. If it is to be asimilar case this weekend, there, hopefully,will be no sign of a procession.

The bumpy Marina Bay circuit requires areturn to the high downforce set up and anextreme level of concentration through itscomplex twenty-three corner layout.

Pirelli has made the soft and supersoft com-

pound tyres available for use this weekend;and given the offset previously seen betweenthese two tyres, strategy will play a part thisweekend.

However, the perfect strategy will mean lit-tle if the race is ruined by being stuck in traf-fic. Overtaking on street tracks is always ata premium and Singapore is no exception. Agood slot on the grid will be vital to a goodposition come race day.

The question of how the track remains com-pletely illuminated is answered by using, intotal, 1500 lighting projectors to light the driv-ers’ way throughout the 61 lap race. Thatleaves only the question of who will top thepodium come Sunday.

Raikkonen Resplendent in Red once more

Ferrari has announced that Kimi Raikko-nen will return to the team for the 2014 sea-son.

Raikkonen, who will partner FernandoAlonso, is said to have agreed to a two-yeardeal. It is believed that Shell will be footingthe bill for Raikkonen to join the team. TheFinn will reportedly earn 20 million Euro perseason.

Another alleged condition of Raikkonen’scontract includes his current race engineer,Mark Slade, making the move to Ferrari aswell.

Raikkonen’s return to Ferrari comes on theheels of months of speculation about fragilenegotiations with the Lotus team. Raikkonenwas believed to have asked for a closer work-ing relationship between Lotus and the Re-nault factory. Reports had also been makingthe rounds about Lotus’s inability to payRaikkonen’s wages.

The end of the first relationship betweenRaikkonen and Ferrari at the end of 2009could have been handled better but Ferraripresident Luca di Montezemolo has alreadybeen smoothing the waters.

Asked about the events surrounding theend of the 2009 season and what happenedwith Raikkonen, Montezemolo said, “Whathappened with Kimi? We won a world cham-pionship with him.”

Attention will now turn to the relationshipbetween Raikkonen and Fernando Alonso asthey become the first Ferrari championshippairing since 1954.

On a personal level Raikkonen couldn’tcare less about who his teammate is. On a pro-fessional level buckle up race fans becausethis is going to be some ride.
