On Saturday, August 1, the Ice Rink at Bay-west Mall began its eight-week training acad-emy aimed at helping skating novices – chil-dren or adults – get to gripswith the ice, whileat the same time scouting for skating talentin the region.“Many skaters haven’t been on the ice for

long, so the academy is going to help themwith their confidence on the ice,” said The IceRink at Baywest manager, Siya Ntsele. TheIce Rink manages the majority of South Afri-ca’s ice rinks, and has successfully initiatedskating academies at their operations inGauteng and KwaZulu-Natal.“The academies have been very popular,

both for parents and for kids. The academyalso gives skaters the platform to choosewhich avenue to pursue – be it ice hockey, orfigure skating.”According to former figure skater Melinda

Lightley, manager and one of the coaches atthe Baywest ice rink academy, the new rinkwas perfect for new skaters to learn the ropes.“Everybody whowants to skate should join

the academy, to learn the basics of skating,as well as how to be safe on the ice,” said

first task was to get participants to enjoyskating as a team, at a social level, beforegetting competitive. The last time the Eastern Cape boasted a

provincial ice hockey team was in the mid-1990s, of which Dodd was a member.“I want ice hockey to start anew and to be

fun. Our main focus is on kids, aged six-years-old and up, as they are the future ofthis wonderful sport. We have 13 kids so far, almost 40 women and about 100 men.”Practice sessions are due to run on Tues-

days, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Sundaymornings, although the times could change, said Dodd.“By the end of this year I would like our

teams to be fully kitted, playing socialgames. Next year we’ll look at separating

R 500 000 to support further students for theduration of their degrees or diplomas; andhas already passed the R 750 000 mark.Prof Swartz leaves for Japan on Sunday

PRE-TEEN Miss PE, Nicole Riek-ert (11), is doing her part for chari-ty, despite her young age.

This grade 6 learner at NewtonPark Primary school wascrowned Pre-Teen Miss PE onMay 2, and has been taking partin this competition since the age

of 4.Talita Riekert, Nicole’s mother,

said Nicole refused to give up, andfinally won the title this year.

“She uses her title as a platformto show all kids that life is aboutgiving, not receiving, and thatkids can make a difference nomatter what their age,” said Tali-ta.

Once a month Nicole lends a

helping hand to the Imfundo Edu-care Project, which is situated inMalabar Extension 6 and was es-tablished by Juanita and AlwynSmith from Rolemodels.

On Mandela Day Nicole took allher savings to buy food and some-thing sweet for the children ofthat area. She plans on reachingout to homes for the elderly in thenear future.

WHATstartedas adiscussionaround the fami-ly dinner table, has nowbecome a realitymadepossible by a young man from Parkside.

Zane Lagerdien (24), decided to start an initi-ative to aid schools in theNorthern areas, afterhis aunt mentioned in passing that the schoolbuilding she teaches at was deteriorating. Thus, the initiative ‘Beautify My School’ wasset into motion and will see primary schoolsin theNorthernsuburbsgettingamuchneededfacelift. Although the project is still in itsground phase, Lagerdien has big plans for afamily fun day where everyone in the commu-nitycancometogetherand lendahand inbeau-tifying Gelvandale Primary School.

According to Lagerdien, Gelvandale Prima-ry was his first choice because it was the firstprimary school to bebuilt in thearea.Original-ly built as a temporary structure in 1954, theschool is still standing, but does need a lot of

TLC. According to the school’s caretaker,James, it has been an “uphill battle and head-ache” to maintain the school grounds andbuilding.

“The plumbing especially is a problem, butwealsoexperienceproblemswith leakagesandit makes the ceilings damp and we constantlyhave to replace the ceilings,” said the con-cerned caretaker. Also of concern are some ofthe facilities of the school as there aren’t manysafety structures in place to prevent learnersfrom slipping and falling. In fact, the caretakerbelieves the cement, which is very slipperywhenwet, is thereason formanyscrapedkneesand elbows. With minimal assistance from thegovernment, schools like Gelvandale Primaryhave to place maintenance last on their list ofpriorities, as it is so time consuming and pri-cey. However, with the assistance that theBeautify My School project will provide, someof the concerns will be addressed.

According to Lagerdien, he decided to aimthis project at primary schools and offer up his

timeandassist by “painting thewalls in differ-ent (bright) colours or making use of a profes-sional to do a paint-by-numbers mural, whichthe children could colour in. These are smallchildren, who are at school most of their dayand we just want them to feel excited aboutcoming to school and being involved at thesame time.”

Lagerdien, who studied Marketing in theUK, has been hard at work to see this dreambecome a reality and has already secured asponsor, in the form of TitaniumMan- a start-up cosmetics company in Cape Town- to pro-vide t-shirts for all thosewho contribute to thebeautifying of Gelvandale Primary. Alumni ofthe school have also been called upon to en-sure that the project is a success. To thosewhowish to be of assistance, contributions can bemade in the form of hardwarematerials, mon-ey or even time.

target club, Jimmy Prideaux, expects bigthings of Tagliaferri.“We are very proud of Giuseppe’s achieve-

ment by earning recognition among SouthAfrica’s best but I know he will surprise hisinternational peers with great scores and flythe South African flag high.’’Clay target shooting requires an exception-

ally high level of concentration, hand-eye co-ordination and composure under extremecompetitive pressure as the moving targetsfly in different directions, once released bya voice-activated speaker system.Tagilaferri believes the skills developed in

Lear over 20 years, from when he joined asan engineer, will assist.“Whereas 70% of a shooter’s success is

based on pure shootingmechanics, I stronglybelieve 25% comes throughmental focus anda further 5% from selfmanagement,’’ he said.Tagliaferri is responsible forLear’s seating

Buying a bed is a long-term investment onlywhen one buys a bed of quality.

Here are 12 tips on buying the best bed:1. First do some online research before go-

ing to a store and picking the first bed yousee.2. Consult your doctor if you have a health

condition. Speaking to a doctor or a physicaltherapist and getting their recommendationis always good, although they are not mat-tress specialists.3. Always bear in mind that firmmattress-

es are not always so good for your back. Re-search has shown that medium-firm mat-tresses are best for lower back pains.4. Pillow tops are not suitable or comforta-

ble for everyone. Lightweight people don’tneed a big pillow, as they don’t have enoughweight to compress the foam inside the pil-low. Heavier people, however, feelmore com-fortable with a bigger pillow.5. Adjustable beds are a great investment.

If you are comfortable sitting in a recliner, adjustable beds are for you. This type of bedslighty relieves pressure on the lower back.

6.Alwaysask theconsultantsor themanag-er about money-back guarantees. You don’twant to be stuck with the wrong bed just be-cause you did not find out about the moneyguarantees attached to buying the bed.7. It’s important to always ask about com-

fort guarantees before you buy a bed. Be sureto understand all the details such as shippingfees and money-back guarantees.8. Always remember to check thewarranty

connected to thebed. Agood-qualitymattresswill normally have a minimum of 10 years’warranty.

9.Toprotectyourbed, getawaterproofmat-tress protector, since stains can void yourwarranty.10. When shopping for a mattress, take it

fora test drive. Lieon themattress forat least10 to 15 minutes to get the real feel of the bed.11. Make sure that you check out all the op-

tions and variations there are.12. It’s always better to shop at a store

which specialises in mattresses only. Thesales people at mattress stores are bettertrained and informed about beds.– SOURCE: WWW.SPINE-HEALTH.COM

ONLY three matches took place inthe PEFA SCORE Energy PremierLeague last weekend.

Last Friday night at The ValleyHearts got the better of NMB Mu-nicipality by 3 goals to nil. Heartswere 2-0 up at half time against amuch improved Municipality side.

Bob Yuill helped himself to 2 goals. The first Yuill goal was a header froma Mikey Spittal cross in the 20th min-ute. His second goal came early in the

second half, after he brought a longwelldirectedpass into theMunicipla-ity anger area under control with awell cushioned first touch followedby a powerfully struck shot to the farpost.

Kalume Patience convertedHearts’ second goal with a good oneon one finish in the 40th minute of thegame. Municipality pressed extreme-ly hard and created numerous chan-ces but the Hearts defence was solid, whilst goal keeper Mike Collier had

a stormer of a game.On the same night, out at Londt

Park in Sunridge Park, Callies gotback to winning ways with a solid 6-1win over Kwadwesi Allstars. Far-ouk Abrahams, for Callies, after ascramble in Kwadwesi’s penalty ar-ea, scored his and Callies’ first goalof the game. Kurt Petersen then putCallies further ahead in the 20th min-ute of the first half from a well con-structed midfield pass.

With about 4 minutes remaining in

KwaDwesi fought hard after playresumed and were awarded for theirefforts when Kholekile Bacela pulleda goal back for them. Halfwaythrough the second half Kurt Peters-

THEY ruled the fictional roost quite some timeago, admittedly – but what Springbok rugbyneeds right now is the problem-solving brain ofaSlimCallaghanoraLemmyCaution.Whoarethese fellows? The first was an English private detective

withaweaknessforIrishwhiskey,50plainciga-rettes a day and strongly attracted to beautifulwomen, preferably blondes. The second, anAmerican former secret service agent, with allthe above weaknesses, preferred brunettes, ifmemory serves correctly.TheywerecreatedbynovelistPeterCheyney,

and at posh boys’ boarding schools, the novelshadtobehiddenunder themattressofyourdor-mitory bed or the house-master, discoveringthem, would confiscate these most readablenovels and feed on them himself. All of this – would you believe? – is apropos

of a somewhat tricky problem facing nationalcoach, Heyneke Meyer, as the Rugby World

Cup, starting in England in September, drawsnear. There are two schools of thought, the firstbelonging to those who refuse, at any price, torelinquish the talents of Jean deVilliers orVic-tor Matfield. They aver that without these twostalwarts the Boks can kiss goodbye the dreamof winning a third World Cup.The pro-Matfield/De Villiers’ school of

thought –bothhavecaptained theBoks let’snotforget – cite the pair’s vast experience: the wilyways and lineout skills of bigVictor and the all-round ability of centre Jean andhis calming in-fluence on players around him.Firstly, what else doesMatfield do other than

excel at the lineout these days? Let’s not forget, too, he’s now in his late 30s. Let’s therefore an-swer that question more directly. Are his line-out skills, these days, any better than those ofEben Etzebeth, Lood de Jager and Pieter-Stephdu Toit?We will know more about De Villiers’ readi-

ness forareturnto thebig-time,after thisSatur-day’s FourNationsRugbyChampionship clashwith Argentina in Durban. By all means let’sseewhatDeVilliers canproduce atKingsPark.Butwhy, justwhenit’s starting toblossom, whydisturb the exciting emergence of the newyouthful centre paring of Damian de Allendeand Jesse Kriel? The two have shown in theiroutings together the emergence of a pairing ofthe class of John Gainsford and MannetjiesRoux.Givenmoretimetogetherthesetwocouldbe every bit as good.So here’s a start towards a solution: include

Jean de Villiers as your 31st player, also back-line manager-coach. Include Matfield as a non-playing forwards’ adviser to head-coach, Mey-er. QED!HEmay have hadmany faults – don’t we all?

Hemay not have seen the wood for the trees asregards SA cricket’s transformation. But CliveRice, who died lastweek of cancer, aged 66, willbe remembered as one of South African crick-et’s greatest talents. Paying tribute last weekformer SA cricket captain, Ali Bacher, said ofRice’s immense talent: “Clive was the fiercestcompetitor I knew.Hewouldhaveheldhis ownin any era, such was his strength of mind. De-feat never entered it. Go well, old friend.”
