Adapting Activities

What does it mean?

Adapting activities = Changing activities

Why do we adapt activities?Think of when I have adapted activities

in our SGPE lessons.

Page 4: PE SG Adapting Activities

Why?

We can adapt activities in order to make them EASIER.We may wish to do so when focussing on improving individual skillsIt is also important for beginners and young performers in an activity, that they attempt a simplified version first, and build up to the full activity

Page 5: PE SG Adapting Activities

How can we adapt activities?

Activity : FootballProblem : Group of young players are becoming extremely tired playing on full pitch

Page 6: PE SG Adapting Activities

Solution

Reduce the area on which they are playingThis will be much less demanding on the players fitness

Page 7: PE SG Adapting Activities

More adaptations

Reduce the number of players in the gameE.g. in Hockey, playing small sided games allows for Players to have more time on the ball More space for players to work in More time for the players It also reduces the amount of options a

player has, which in turn will make the decision making process easier, allowing said player to work on the skills of the game

Page 8: PE SG Adapting Activities

From this . . . Lots of bodies; difficult decisions in pressured situations

. . .to this. More Space; More time; Easier decisions

Equipment

Give me and example of when it would be appropriate to adapt equipment within an activity. Tennis/badminton – small rackets allow for more control, especially for younger performers/beginnersFootball – Use smaller balls for young players

Switch the size 5 football for a size 3 or 4 (smaller), to help young players.

Conditioned Games

What are conditioned games? We change the rules to give us a FOCUS to our games i.e. to work on a particular skill. If we want to work on our passing in Basketball, we would ban dribbling. This would force everyone in the group to pass and move, as it would be the only way to progress towards the basket
