Superintendent’s Message

Have Your Say on the Divisional School Calendar This month, we will invite members of our school communities to review and provide input on the proposed 2019-2020 Divisional School Calendar for Peace River School Division. We welcome and encourage input from our families, staff and community members in order

to help us develop our divisional school calendar reflecting the needs of our school communities.

All input received regarding the proposed 2019-2020 Calendar will be reviewed by the PRSD Calendar Committee that consists of a parent, teacher, principals, management and representatives from neighbouring school boards. Input from our school communities will be reviewed and considered as the committee collaboratively develops a calendar for the PRSD Board of Trustees’ consideration. The Board of Trustees will review the calendar and input as collected and the calendar will be presented to the board for their approval at the March 2019 board meeting. Please watch for more information on how to share your input on the school calendar in the upcoming weeks. We will share more details through newsletters, websites, email and social media. This is a great opportunity for our families and school communities to be involved in decision making on a school and divisional level, and we thank you in advance for your input. As the holiday season approaches, so too do the demands on our families, ourselves and on our time. It is a

busy time of year that can sometimes be overwhelming and we need to do our best to maintain balance in our

lives and consider safety factors. Both adults and children can feel stress during the holiday season. Keep in

mind what is important during this time of year – the enjoyment of fellowship and celebrating with family and

friends.

Remember to take time to reflect and rest. Holiday preparations often involve much lifting, moving and

organizing. It is important that everyone be mindful of proper lifting techniques and be aware of surface

hazards when bustling about. Ensure that electrical outlets are not overloaded and extension cords are in

good condition and position. Ladder safety should be practiced when hanging decorations and walkways and

driveways kept clear for winter visitors. Alberta Health Services has prepared an all season injury prevention

and safety suggestion guide for families.

Many great tips can be found at This Link. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Safety Advisory Committee

School Council

Our last school council meeting on Monday, November 19, we reviewed

the Annual Three Year Education plan for Peace River High. This important

document that highlights our Accountability Survey results, comments and

strategies will be posted on our website, and for any questions or concerns

please contact the school. Our next School Council meeting will be on

Monday, January 14 at 6:30 pm at Peace High where we will be discussing

and answering any questions surrounding the end of semester one, exams,

and the start of semester two. We would love to hear from you, and input

from our school community is what helps to continue to improve the

education offered at Peace River High School.

Graduation 2019

Grad 2019 is quickly approaching and that means that grad prep has already started! We have decided on our

grad theme which will be A Starry Night. The media committee is preparing the slide show and is asking that

Grads get 1 baby photo and 1 candid photo to head of the committee Cassidy Macintyre before Christmas

break. Song suggestions can also be directed to the media committee. Grad sweaters are now available for

purchase through the Entripy Shops link on the Peace High website. For those that have not already done so,

please make sure to get your height to Paulina as soon as possible so they can begin ordering grad gowns.

Parents, please note that we will be having a parent meeting on Wednesday, December 12th at 6:00 here at

the high school.

Watch our school website and Facebook pages for

information!

FNMI (First Nation, Metis and Inuit)

News

A dedicated group of students from our Aboriginal

Studies 30 class facilitated our regional Blanket

Exercise at a meeting for principals, vice-principals

and central office staff for all of the schools in Peace

River School Division #10. Students involved

received a Nomad award at our Celebration of

Success assembly to acknowledge the contribution

they made to the professional development of our

school division administrators. This November,

Aboriginal Studies 30 students also supported a

project to raise awareness about homelessness in

our region.

On Nov 8th, a group of interested students from

Peace High had the opportunity to attend the

Aboriginal Youth Career Workshop. In addition to listening

to inspirational speakers and musicians, they also were able

to meet in small groups with people actually working in

careers that they were interested in learning more about. A

diverse selection of careers from lawyers, to truck drivers to

tattoo artists were represented.

A final highlight to mention is that our whole school

acknowledged the contribution of our Metis veterans as a

part of our Remembrance Day Ceremony.

Project PEACE is one of 37 projects in a province-wide Mental Health Capacity Buildings in Schools Intiative. The

Initiative is funded by AHS - Addiction and Mental Health, in partnership with Alberta Education and other

Move.. Play..Laugh.

This is the time of year that it is an extra challenge to stay active. A very

important part of maintaining healthy mental health is to keep your body

moving. Research has proving that physical activity can reduce the

symptoms of depression and overall sadness.

According to the Canadian Physical Activity Guidelines, children require 60 minutes of moderate to

vigorous-intensity activity every day. Adults need to accumulate 150 minutes of moderate to

vigorous activity per week (that is like 22 minutes a day.)

This all means you need to SWEAT to stay healthy!

Be an Active Family

Over the Christmas break challenge your family to do a physical activity everyday together. For 60

minutes put down the hand held devices, turn off the game console and the television. It is time for

some action and family fun! Here are some easy activities to do:

• Shovelling snow at your residence; for more of a workout, shovel your neighbour’s snow

• Build snow sculptures, a snow slide, or a fort

• Tobogganing

• Snowshoeing

• Downhill or cross-country skiing

• Indoor swimming

• Family Dance Party

• Play Tag

• Ice Skating

The Project PEACE team would like to wish you

a healthy, happy and safe holiday season!

The LOLs have been working with Mr. Lawrence on raising funds for a new refugee family by hosting a dinner on

December 1st and an overnight movie marathon at the school on December 7/8th. The dinner was a fundraising project

to support the efforts of #Peace River Welcomes Refugees to bring the Mahangel family from Sudan where they are

currently living as refugees from Eritrea. The family includes the parents, three daughters and a nephew of the father.

They are registered with the UNHCR. The father is the brother of Michael Mahangel who lives in Peace River. They are

being sponsored by the Peace River Alliance Church and the steering committee includes people who were involved in

the resettlement of two refugee families from Syria.

The dinner was supported and sponsored by the Peace High LOL (League of Leadership) and it was supported by

donations of ham and turkey from Johnny Sausage, Freson Brothers, and Karl's No Frills. Entertainment was provided by

a choir under the direction of Donna Burnham and meal was prepared by Crystal Owens with help from the LOL's who

also set up the tables. Sharon Krushel donated the proceeds form the sale of her cards for the project as well. Towards

the latter part of the evening we auctioned off pies that had been donated. Between the ticket sales, card sales,

donations and the pie auction we brought in about $3600 towards our goal of bringing the Mahangel family to Peace

River.

Volleyball

This season PRHS hosted 5 volleyball tournaments. This would not be possible without our school community coming

together. A huge thank you to parents and community members who ran concessions, coaches rooms and who helped

set up and clean up at various gyms around Peace River. Thank you so much to all of the PRHS staff who helped

supervise, score keep, clean up and do anything else that was needed. It would be impossible to run these events

without their support. And lastly, but certainly not least, to the student volunteers who helped score keep, officiate,

clean, set up, tear down and everything else that they did, including bring some tired staff members tea: Thank you for

your help, your enthusiasm and your hard work. It truly was appreciated.
