PEAK Week 2018 In the Student Planner, you will see the explanation of the acronym “PEAK Week” – “an opportunity that takes place outside the walls of the classroom” the week before Spring Break. Different grade groups have different purposefully designed activities. This is a program Carver has continued to provide because of the unique opportunities for learning and community building.

PEAK week: leads students into new experiences, to see new facets of society, culture, people and themselves. holds immense capacity to help shape values in fresh, interesting and unexpected ways. helps students to stretch internally, to take initiative, be courageous, trust more and try new things. takes student into experiences that call for critical thinking skills, self-management, empathy and tolerance. provides physically-oriented activities for Junior students that are socially engaging and generally lots of fun. involves Career Explorations for grade 10 students and can confirm or eliminate a path for their future. takes grade 11s into a cross-cultural immersion, with all sorts of unfamiliar and unique encounters. gives a special relational opportunity to soon-to-be graduates, one many alumni said was a highlight. empowers authentic leadership in the context of a faith and learning community.

Classrooms have natural physical boundaries; forests and beaches and cities around the world do not. That is part of the power of PEAK Week, education beyond the walls. Our staff will give a great deal of themselves in these out and about environments, especially those involved with the international trips. Please pray for God’s purposes in the days ahead.

Grade 7 Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Chinese Classical Garden Field Trip on February 23

We walked through Chinatown learning about the Chinese who came here in 1885 with their fascinating history. The garden was built in 1986 by Chinese immigrants, made to replicate a home of an ancient scholar of China.

Osanna Wong We learned a lot about Chinese culture and historical events that gave Vancouver a revolutionary change. There were many amazing facts that we learned about the life of a scholar from the Ming Dynasty. Many immigrant families had to work hard to get enough money to provide for their families.

Amos Lin The trip around Chinatown showed that the city expanded in one direction. Because of this, the dates that the companies started increased as we walked down the street.

Working on Work

All Carver grade 10 students came together today to hear from a special speaker, Jason, from the BC Federation of Labour to talk about Health and Safety. He advised them of a number of key things they will benefit from knowing, most especially, the four basic health and safety rights all Canadians have:

1. The right to know about hazards in the workplace. 2. The right to participate in Occupational Health and Safety activities through the Joint Health and Safety Committee. 3. The right to refuse unsafe work. 4. The right to no retaliation (eg: discipline or loss of job for raising OH&S concerns.)

Why is this a valuable use of class time? This is important educationally because ignorance of these rights can put someone in danger unknowingly. Your children, our students, are just years away from entering the work force in a variety of ways. In fact, some of these grade 10s have already begun with part time jobs, making for some questions out of their personal experiences. And it is practical now; knowing these rights will be helpful for the grade 10s in their work experience next week. We encourage all our families to discuss these four basic rights with your teenagers, to help them think through what work will be like and how they can bring values like respect, honesty and integrity wherever they end up.

Carver Cancer Awareness Club

The Carver Cancer Awareness Club was founded by Ian Ching, Kaylan Mah and Caleb Lee last year, when they were in grade 10. Started with a purpose to volunteer and to educate others about cancer, the club has cooperated with the Canadian Cancer Society in multiple events. Members of this club have held bake sales and volunteered in the Daffodil Dash and Relay for Life events held by the Canadian Cancer society. They have also helped to organize the 2017 Terry Fox run at Carver. The club plans to invite speakers to chapels and advisories to fulfill their goal of providing education regarding cancer and health.
