History & Introduction The lulu (locally qamashah), or pearl oyster was a source of

wealth in the Emirates long before the discovery of oil.

Pearl oysters occur naturally on relatively shallow banks (fasht) in the Gulf.

‘Sambuks’ is the name of the boat used for Pearl Diving

Steps of a Pearl Journey Boarding a traditional pearling dhow

Join the crew singing traditional Arabic songs of the sea

Fitted out with traditional diving attire including a muslin cotton bodysuit, a rope tied around the waist and a peg for your nose

Arrival at the pearl beds

Under the careful supervision of safety divers, try to dive for yourself

Collect oysters

Return to the dhow and open your collected oysters and collect pearls
