January 3, 1876 Dear Diary, I am hiding many things from George. He has sent for a doctor to see me. He says that I am an anxious woman and by this time I should be preparing our home for a child. Perhaps that is what I need. George raises his voice in the night and I become hysterical when the servants have gone.

June 4, 1876 Dear Diary, Rejoice! I am pregnant. There will soon be a baby. The baby will settle things with Mr. Scarborough. I won’t need to be afraid. I will have a son that he will cherish.

January 28th, 1877   Dear Diary,   I am alone with our daughter during the days. HE doesn’t touch her and I am meant to. She screams and I find myself agitated and unwell. The maids have been instructed to keep the door locked. I day dream on the floor to keep my own mind.

February 19th, 1877   Dear Diary,   There is silence again. The maids whisper about what I have done. Mothers stop their children from crying. She clung to my fingers as I rocked her until it stopped. They took her away. I am afraid of the things they will whisper to Mr. Scarborough when he arrives.

June 21st, 1877   Dear Diary,   They won’t find me where I have gone. I have buried myself deep into the wall. The yellow surrounds me and I am free. I am at home in my own mind.

March 7, 1877 Dear Diary, They tell me I have to stay and be locked in this room with this wallpaper that was for our daughter. But it is for me now. The yellow is soothing. I am safe, here with the bars on the windows.
