Pearland JH West Band
2020 – 2021 Placement Auditions
The 2020-2021 band placement auditions for the Pearland JH West Band will take place as video recording submissions
through www.Flipgrid.com. These submissions will be due by 4:00 pm on Friday, May 8th.
This packet contains all the audition materials. Work out this material to the best of your ability. We will be listening for
good fundamental tone production, correct notes and rhythms, technical ability, and musicianship.
You will perform the following:
1. 2 Major scales (see next page): must be performed with a metronome (met = 80 - 120), tongued up and
slurred down. Please choose the option of the scale that best fits your ability level.
2. 1 Bonus scale: you must play one additional major scale, but it may be of your choosing.
3. Chromatic scale: must be performed with a metronome (met = 60 – 110), all slurred (except for trombones).
Please choose the option of the scale that best fits your ability level.
4. 1 Prepared music selection: no metronome used for recording. Incoming 8th graders will play the 8th grade
selection. Incoming 7th graders may choose either the 7th grade selection or 8th grade selection. (7th graders
may submit all of the 7th grade selection and some of the 8th grade selection.)
If you are unable to submit the audition video because they do not have an instrument or technology, please contact
Ms. Bishop to schedule an in-person audition once the we return to school. This audition process is very important to
ensure you are placed in the appropriate band class. Please read all the directions carefully and practice regularly! We
are offering weekly help sessions through video conferencing.
Please email Ms. Bishop at [email protected] for audition information or assistance.
Good Luck!
Directions for setting up your video recording device:
1) Setup your recording device so that your embouchure and fingers are visible in the video. We must be able to
see your embouchure and fingers, or you will lose points. Setting your device up at an angle to you
(approximately 45 degrees to your left or right, not directly in front of you) is our recommendation.
2) In order to achieve the best audio quality, you need to record yourself with your device at different distances
from you, then listen to the recordings to see which one sounds the best.
3) If you have multiple devices capable of recording, test all of them to determine which one has the best audio
recording quality.
