Online Writing Filed Test

• Mandatory for ALL Writing test grade levels:• Grades 5, 8, and EOC

• Will be conducted AFTER regularly scheduled paper writing test in spring 2012• March 5th–March 9th paper writing test window

• Does NOT count toward Accreditation/AYP• VDOE window: February 13th to April 8th

TestNavTM 7 Practice Items/Tools &

Guides


Online Practice Tools vs ePATs• An online practice tools mirrors the new TestNav 7 online

interface for online writing and non-writing tests• Does not use SOL release tests• Limited number of sample questions/item types• Can be accessed via the Training Site test sessions OR from

specified VDOE links• Electronic Practice Assessment Tools (ePAT)

• Older version of online practice tool (TestNav 6.9)• Does not have look and feel of TestNav version 7• Used in conjunction with state SOL release tests• ePAT client software & release tests must be downloaded to

machine• Have been modified to provide examples of TEI’s

TestNav 7 – Practice Items and Guides• The practice items provide examples of the new content and

increased rigor represented by the revised Standards of Learning as well as illustrate the new Technology Enhanced Item (TEI) types.

• The guides provide step-by-step guidance for the teacher and students.

• Reading Practice Items and Guides

Practice Items and Guides for Grades 3-8 and EOC Reading will be available by February 2012.

• Grade 8 and EOC Reading Demonstration Items

This tool provides students with direct exposure to the format of the Reading and Writing passages within TestNav 7.

• Mathematics Practice Items and Guides for TEI’s

• A TestNav 7 version of these TEI practice items and guides along with items and guides for grades 3, 4, and 5 Mathematics will be available by February 2012

TestNav 7 – Online Writing Filed Test• Writing (Short Paper) Practice Tool

An online writing practice tool that mirrors the online interface that students will use to respond to the writing prompt during the Spring 2012 Writing field test, is currently available on the VDOE Web site at: http://www.doe.virginia.gov/testing/sol/practice/writing_practice_tool.shtml

• The tool will be updated to include the following features that will be available during the spring 2012 writing field test:• Spell check available to all students (No Dictionaries)• Indent or tab button to indent text• Formatting tools to add bold, italics, and underline.

TestNavTM 7 Functionality Overview


TestNavTM 7• Browser-based test delivery technology• TestNav installs its components when the

student launches it to take a test, and removes its components once the test is over.

Trouble-Shooting Tips• Make sure student has been logged into ‘RPSSTUDENT’

user account• Main TestNav 7 log-in screen should be up prior to

student arriving to test• TestNav url address should be that listed on the

student’s authorization ticket• Make sure student raises hand immediately when a

TestNav error message appears• Whenever a student enters their log-in information, the

test session status goes to ‘Active’. Need to ‘Resume’ student test.
