1.0 Project Title

Collaborative Renovation on S0413 Studio Art Classroom in S-Tower

2.0 Brief Description of the Project

This proposal is for the renovation and update of studio art classroom S0413 in the S-

Tower building. The goal of this project is to create a space that can be efficiently and

meaningfully shared between Media Science & Graphic (MSG) students and Art

Education students. The renovated classroom space will include:

White boards, tac boards

Room divider

Fixed lightning/ceiling

Allocating a new position for the sitting

Electrical outlets

3.0 Introduction

Classroom behaviour settings that can be manipulated as positive, neutral, or negative

influence on both instructional events and student conduct. In art education, the

physical characteristics of the room setting provide the context for the expressive and

response activities associated with studio work, art history, aesthetics, and art criticism.

To support those multiple dimension, the physical environment must be planned to

address both educational and behavioural priorities. Although some factors associated

with the management of student conduct are difficult to identify and control, the physical

setting is readily accessible for manipulation by art teachers and students.

The artistic dimension of teaching becomes apparent when teachers are engaged in

the planning and implementation of the academic program. They draw upon a

combination of factors that includes personal preferences, individual values, and

professional experience to provide learning experiences for their students. How the

classroom is arranged and managed as behaviour setting results from a blending of art

and science (Kindsvatter & Levine, 1986).

Art rooms can be organized to provide best ergonomic “fit” between physical

features, specific lesson activities, and student behaviours. In practice, such an

approach would include planning to accommodate the characteristics of a specific

lesson while minimizing the negative effects of tiring or routine tasks. For example;

when students are making wood or linoleum block prints, specific work areas can be

designated to accommodate the various stages and operations that are part of the relief

printing process: planning, cutting, inking, printing, and matting.

Since each stage involves different behaviours, grouping students who are engaged

in similar activities can minimize potential conflicts, by such factors as traffic patterns,

the location of the sink, storage areas, and display space. Similar considerations can be

identified to plan spatial arrangements associated with each studio discipline.

4.0 Problems Identification

Currently, the S0413 studio room has outdated an outdated technology that does not

accommodate larger groups. The tables constantly need to be adjusted to

accommodate each class group and a large part of the classroom is unused. The

renovation would update technology enabling greater use of current tools, increase

storage for student material and supplies, increase display areas, and improve the

classroom overall for those impacted via colour, lighting, and arrangement.

Renovating Studio Art Classroom S0413 to provide the availability of two segregated

work spaces, with access to a wall-mounted video monitor and white board would

improve the quality of the MSG and Arts Education students’ course experience in three

ways. First, it would provide an equivalent, in terms of size and technology, workspace

environment for both teams. Second, it would allow the faculty to more dynamically

interact with each team during the class work sessions. Third, the retractable walls

would allow for the entire group to meet in one location for mass meetings with the

project client, outside speakers, and the faculty.

5.0 Objectives

Because this renovation would enable greater use of the classroom, the objectives of

this project would be:

To give the advantages to the students to work efficiently with needed updates

Improve the quality of the space technologically, professionally, and

aesthetically

Students would have greater access to a space that could accommodate small

and large groups, collaborative work, and easily enable lecture, discussion, and

studio forums

Previously, a few problems has been identified:

Outdated technology

Tables constantly need to adjusted to accommodate

Storage limit

The lack of display areas

Every semester, each pieces of artworks that is produced by students are stored in S0413.

However, the storage capacity is limited due to unorganized stuff and things inside the room.

Without a bigger storage for supplies and for in-process projects, the room soon becomes

clogged with individual projects and nothing more can happen.

To overcome this problem, we planned to re-arrange and clean up the room

(decorate) in a proper way that can give more storage space and be more convenient

for the students and lectures’ use.

Of all the rooms in a school, the art room needs to be located so it has

windows with the best possible view for inspiration and for learning. Art rooms need

windows for observation drawing and for teaching art concepts about space, depth,

form, and perspective.

As a teamwork group, we have decided to delegate our task between

members and split the room into two parts to ensure the workflow to be smooth. The

front part will be handled by the Information and Science Communication (ISC)

students, while the back room will be handled by the MSG students. One side of the

room will be covered with the individual artworks, and another side will have quotes

(framed) to give a boost and motivation for the artist to work.

The first step is all the un-used and kept artworks that has been stored in the

room at each part and corner of the rooms will be use and hang to the wall for

exhibition – front to back. Secondly, we have planned to add a few quotes from

famous and well-known person to motivate the students for more inspiration. In

addition, we proposed the idea of re-arranging the tables in a different way that will

give a better lighting for use to work with shades and more spaces for the students

not to cause potential conflict.
