Pediatrics Theme ‘curriculum’

Page 2: Pediatrics Theme ‘curriculum’ - University of Manitoba · Pediatrics • Pediatrics is a THEME not a course or a module in pre-clerkship • Pediatrics is a mandatory major core

Pediatrics • Pediatrics is a THEME not a course or a

module in pre-clerkship • Pediatrics is a mandatory major core

rotation in clerkship • Unique body of knowledge, skills and

attitudes that pertain to the health care and well being of children and youth

Page 3: Pediatrics Theme ‘curriculum’ - University of Manitoba · Pediatrics • Pediatrics is a THEME not a course or a module in pre-clerkship • Pediatrics is a mandatory major core

Goals • Students must come to clerkship with the

foundational knowledge, skills & attitudes necessary to maximize their learning and success in the core rotation

• Students must pass the Pediatrics NBME at the end of the rotation and MCCQE – This drives students’ studying

Page 4: Pediatrics Theme ‘curriculum’ - University of Manitoba · Pediatrics • Pediatrics is a THEME not a course or a module in pre-clerkship • Pediatrics is a mandatory major core

Student Feedback • “No pediatrics” in current pre-clerkship

– Students do not perceive that they learn pediatric concepts in the current model

• “Do not feel prepared for the Pediatrics clerkship” – Is not unique to Peds but students tell us

they feel less prepared for this rotation compared to others

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Currently some of the Peds concepts are in block 2 which is too early for the students. They do not have the necessary foundational knowledge and they do not have a chance to apply the concepts till clerkship, by which time they have forgotten most of it
Page 5: Pediatrics Theme ‘curriculum’ - University of Manitoba · Pediatrics • Pediatrics is a THEME not a course or a module in pre-clerkship • Pediatrics is a mandatory major core

Issues

• Students should feel better prepared with the new curriculum

• Pediatrics concepts should be included and be identified as such as students learn basic medicine concepts.

• Core Pediatric concepts and foundational knowledge need to be included in the individual modules and courses

• Should be improved scaffolding and integration

Question #1: • Concepts taught in HD block 2 – WHERE???

– 27 sessions (lectures, demonstrations, tutorials) – Well child care, adolescent health – Nutrition (?GI) – Developmental - behavioural pediatrics – Parenting, child abuse – Injury prevention, Child health status (?CH) – Effect of chronic illness on child and adolescent – Communication with children (?CS) – ID (peds pathogens, vaccines) (ID)

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Where there is no (red) means that we are not sure where these concepts belong

4. Educational Strategies

• Foundational Knowledge – Developed by consensus

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Foundational knowledge is basically the knowledge that students need to approach the clinical presentation – we anticipate that often this will be aquired pre-clerkship. Common, important, unique to discipline of paeds.
