FOREWORD.IN this Roll of Honour will be found the names of 1764 menconnected with Tweeddale by parentage, birth, marriage, or residence,

who have enlisted in His Majesty's Forces. The numbers for the

respective parishes are as follows:

The pride with which the people of Peeblesshire regard these

seventeen hundred stalwarts is overshadowed by the knowledge that

some of them have gone forth never to return. Of those whose namesare recorded here, 72 have already made the great sacrifice; manyhave been wounded—some of them very grievously; 19 have been

reported as missing; while 9 have been interned in Germany as

prisoners of war.iii.

iv. PEEBLESSHIRE ROLL OF HONOUR.

Included in the Roll are the names of several men who have been

discharged from the Army, owing to the serious nature of their woundsor because they had become physically unfit for further service.

These names have been retained, as the men are entitled to credit for

having "done their bit" while they were able.

No record has been kept of those reported wounded, as it wasfound impossible to differentiate between wounds which disabled the

sufferer for perhaps a few days only and those of a more serious nature.

At the end of the Roll will be found the names of the officials of

the Peeblesshire Volunteer Home Guards, with a list of the membersof that organisation.

The Publisher has made every effort to secure accuracy in the

Roll as now issued, but he is aware that both errors and omissions

will be found in it. It would be a great favour if friends who maynotice mistakes would at once intimate the same to the Publisher, so

that these may be put right in a second edition, should such be

called for.

PEEBLES, 8th January 1916.
