How does the Peer Education Programme work? How does the Peer Education Programme work? How does the Peer Education Programme work? How does the Peer Education Programme work?

The recovery movement has seen the introductionof a new role, that of a peer worker. New tomental health, but not new to other health fields, the role of the peer is to increase hope andengagement by the power of "having beenthere". Hope is the central belief required forpeople who face significant mental healthchallenges and forms an important part insupporting people's transitioninto recovery. People with lived experience whowant to become peer workers must first gothrough a training programme before theycan apply for a post within the organisation.

What is recovery? What is recovery? What is recovery? What is recovery?

Recovery means different things to differentpeople, but in mental health the term "recovery"is about building a meaningful and satisfying lifein the presence or absence of symptoms orchallenges. Recovery is a movement away fromdiagnosis, illness and symptoms, to health, strengths and wellness. These simple concepts area radical challenge to existing mental healthservice provision and to the wider society ingeneral.

The notion of recovery holds within it complexconcepts. People do not recover in isolation, butare connected through social inclusion - ie(employment, housing, community connectionsand involvement), empowerment and self-awareness. These ideas can be challenging toservice providers, carers, families, friends and thewider society.

Peer workers are recruited because of theirlived experience and their passion to supportother individuals in their recovery journey.

They attend a challenging educational trainingprogramme and have to successfully complete allaspects of this prior to graduating. They are theninterviewed for posts within CPFT, as and whenthey become availabile. Jobs are not guaranteedand peer workers must go through the sameCPFT application and interview process as anyother applicant. Peer workers use a recovery andcoaching approach when working with others.

"The training took us on amassive journey of selfdiscovery and gave us anappreciation for ourstrengths".

Who can apply for the training?Who can apply for the training?Who can apply for the training?Who can apply for the training?

To be eligible for the PEP training, people need tohave had significant mental health challenges, usually via accessing secondary mental healthservices and have a good understanding of theirown recovery journey. They must be comfortablesharing their lived experience with others.
