THE resurfacing of Beach Road was neces-sary and will adhere to quality standardsonce completed.

This according to DA Ward 2 Councillor,Dean Biddulph, after media reports of resi-dents complaining about the quality of workdone during the R10 million project to resur-face the stretch of Beach Road and MarineDrive between South End Museum and theBeacon.

Biddulph, who is the councillor for the areain which Beach Road is located, said he hadinteracted extensively with themunicipal of-ficials responsible for the project.

This comesafter a local dailynewspaper re-ported that residents were upset at what theyclaim was “shoddy workmanship on unnec-essary repairs” at the beachfront’smain arte-rial road.

The article stated that residents said themunicipality had created new problems re-garding manhole covers, hand-painted mark-ings and bumpy surfaces.

Biddulph said the decision to refurbish thisstretch of road was informed by the fact thatin numerous places the road surface, al-though intact and apparently in good condi-tion, had already degraded substantially andwas in need of a new topping.

“Motorists who use this road on a daily ba-sis will recall the big increase in potholes fre-quently experienced last year, particularly af-

ter heavy rains. This was as a direct resultof water penetrating the road surface andwhich creates considerable damage when ve-hicles travel on the road compressing the wa-ter below the surfaces,” he added.

quate maintenance. As a result of insuffi-cient maintenance spending it would ulti-mately need to be rebuilt at tremendous costto the city fiscus.

“The concerns raised regarding reported

unevenness and the depth of many manholesor service access points have been brought tothe attention of the department and are in theprocess of being properly rehabilitated so thatthey are level with the newly tarred road sur-face,” said Biddulph.

He said themetrohadcommitted to checkinguneven areas with a rolling straight edgebrought in from Johannesburg to establishwhether acceptable tolerances have been ex-ceeded.

“Any areas found to be outside of the pre-scribed specification will be brought to the at-tention of the contractor to rectify. I would liketo thank the members of the public who raisedtheir concerns, as well as to the officials in thedepartment for their proactive stance in deal-ing with this thorny issue,” he said.

MUCH-NEEDED support fromthe Baywest Mall and the princi-pal contractor on the R1.7bn de-velopment, Murray & RobertsBuildings, has helped the WeCare Community Centre inBethelsdorp towards opening avital Wellness Day Clinic in theNorthern Areas.

A donation of R30 000 has beenused by the We Care non-profitorganisation (NPO) for crucialHIV/Aids awareness campaignsin the area, and also for the train-ing of nurses and for medicalequipment for the special dayclinic.

We Care CEO Ashlene Arendssaid the funding had gone a longway in assisting the centre.

“Whenwe formed a Senior Cit-izens Club, residents in the areatold us that they have to wait allday at the government clinics toreceive medication and to beseen by a doctor,” said Arends.“We saw a need for a wellnessday clinic, and we have beenslowly working towards makingthat a reality.”

The clinic is on course to openinAugust, weekdays from7am to6pm, she said.

Funding from Murray & Rob-erts Buildings and Baywest hasalso gone towards training sixnurses, buying uniforms, andpurchasing medical equipmentsuch as a patient examinationbed,HIV testers and a blood pres-sure machine.

Murray & Roberts BuildingsCommercial Man-ager,Mark Belman, said such financialsupport was impor-tant for NelsonMandela BayNGOs.

“It’s clear that this is an impor-tant need in the community andthe We Care Centre has beenvery diligent in how it has spentthe donation,” said Belman. “It’sheartening to see the positiverole this centre has in the com-munity.”

Wanda Ferreira, of Murray &Roberts Buildings, oversaw thedonation on behalf of BaywestandMurray & Roberts Buildingsto make sure all funding is beingutilised as indicated in the pro-posals.

“For us it was important tomake a real difference in thecommunity, and helping to-wards the opening of this WeCare Wellness Day Centre is onesuch need,” said Ferreira.

“The HIV/Aids awarenesscampaigns have also been a hugesuccess, so we hope to maintainour relationship with this com-munity going forward.”

Baywest MD, Gavin Blows, said that the development of Bay-west City over the next 15 yearswould not only create muchneeded jobs in the region, but al-someant that the developers, Ab-acus Asset Management and Bil-lion Group, as well as BuildingContractors, could continue tohelp communities in need.

Arends said the We Care Cen-tre received no governmentfunding and was wholly relianton donations from the public andbusinesses.

IT’S that time of the year again where TheFriendly City shows, bymeans of practical par-ticipation, that it cares.

After the unprecedented success of the 2012launch of this campaign and the follow up suc-cess of Wheelchair Wednesday 2013 the Associa-tion for the Physically Disabled (APD) are goingbigger and better in 2014.

Brian Bezuidenhout, Project organiser and Ex-ecutive Director of APD, commented, “With su-permarket giant Spar once again on board as ourmain sponsor, participating companies can bracethemselves for a whole lot of fun and value formoney.”

Wheelchair Wednesday is an awareness andempowerment initiative that gets business lead-ers involved in the basic core issues relevant tomobility-impaired people.

On each of the fiveWednesdays during July, 20businessmen and their assistantswill spend fourhours in a wheelchair.

During this time they will be expected to per-form a variety of basic tasks to get a feeling ofwhat “wheelchair life” is all about.

“Oneof themajor factors thatprohibit personswith disabilities from integrating and function-ingnormallywithin society is the issueof reason-able accommodation,” Bezuidenhout explained.

“It is to this end that we have devised thisawareness campaign. The SPAR WheelchairWednesday initiative will once again challengethemindset of the decision-makers within socie-ty andhelp tobring about anunprecedentedpar-adigm shift in the way persons with disabilitiesare treated.”

From this exercise emerges a better under-standing of the need for an accessible environ-ment. It also creates a willingness to accept thefact thatpeoplewithdisabilitiescanperformeve-ryday tasks -maybe just a little differently- andfromthis thereemergesawillingness toofferem-ployment.

At the end of the project (end July) the wheel-chairsusedbythe100participantsarethenhand-ed over to needy beneficiaries.

At the time of going to press APD announcedthat the field of 100 participants is filling up fast.

“We are excited to have representation from awidevarietyofbusinesseswithin the city.Ofpar-ticular interest is theparticipationofbigpropertydevelopers; the latest being Baywest, educationalinstitutions, retailers and themotor trade.Weareconcentrating on creating an awareness to hope-fully bring about change in public places and intheminds of people. Having achieved this publicplaces will be more accessible,” said APD Chair-man Garth van Niekerk.

HISTORY is nothing new to Formula1and it re-opensoneof its oldest chap-ters this weekend at the AustrianGrand Prix. The Formula 1 world champion-

ship returns to Styria, at the foot oftheAlps, for the first time in adecade. The Austrian Grand Prix has fea-

tured on the F1 calendar in severaldifferent forms; from the one-off air-field in Zeltweg in 1963 to theÖsterre-ichring throughout the 80s to its cur-rent guise of the A1-Ring in Spiel-berg.The A1-Ringwas purchased by Red

Bull who agreed with Bernie Eccle-stone to reinstate the circuit as partof the championship. The last meeting in 2003 was won

by then Ferrari driver Michael Schu-macher who was well on his way totitle number six.It was during the now infamous

2002 Austrian GP where the conten-tious issue of team-orders took centrestage.Itwashere that theFerrari team in-

structed Rubens Barrichello to giveway to teammateMichael Schumach-er.Themovewasmetwithmuchnega-

tivity and the unprecedented jeeringof Schumacher on the podium. The renamed Red Bull Ring’s lay-

out remains unchanged and its4.326km length is dominated by sev-eral straights.

Therefore, it requires a mediumdownforce set-up with a particularemphasis on braking which trans-lates to a high rate of fuel consump-tion.Similar toBahrain’s Sakhir circuit

the Red Bull Ring’s middle sector isdominated by medium speed cor-ners.Pirelli’s analysis of the track re-

veals a moderately abrasive surfacesuitable for the soft and supersoftcompounds. The circuit’s high altitude venue

will place serious demand on the 2014power units which will have to copewith a lap spent at full throttle fornearly 70%.The trackonlyhasnine corners but

its character is derived from the sig-nificant undulation throughout lapand four opportunities for overtak-ing.The Canadian Grand Prix demon-

strated how quickly fortunes couldchange and proved thatMercedes arenot bulletproof.A failure on both cars revealed

their fallibility and gave Nico Ros-berg a significant advantage in thedriver’s championship. Thehammer-blow in Monaco and a bit of luck inCanada has Rosberg on an ominoushigh. The German won’t have any diffi-

culty with the Ring which suggeststhat Lewis Hamilton will need to be

on top of his game to begin recoupinghis losses. “I caught up before and Ican catch up again,” said Hamilton.“It’s going to take another four winstomake the difference so I’m going todo my best to get those results.”Ferrari’s abundant struggles in

2014 would suggest that recovery isthe main aim. However, the latest rhetoric from

the team seems almost defiant. Onlynew team principal Marco Mattiaccihas pointed to an ineffective trend ofdevelopment as the reason for theteam remaining “behind the curve.”Contrastingly, Ferrari president

Luca di Montezemolo went so far asto suggest that the Italian team couldquit the sport altogether.Yet, something suggests that this

lamenting of the new F1 rules wouldmost likely not have seen the light ofday if Ferrari were leading the 2014field.It is rather silly of di Montezemolo

to throw his toys out of the cot be-cause of his team’s woeful season. The fact remains that all teams arebound by the same set of rules andsome simply did a better job of inter-preting them than others. It seems obvious that Red Bull will

be in the spotlight this weekend. Butit remains to be seen how much ofthat spotlight will transfer to thetrack in the face of themightily domi-nant Mercedes team.

WHEN setting out in business, or in any fulltimework, it is important to both enjoywhatyou do and also tomake a valuable contribu-tion to others.

It is also important for your endeavours topay you, or to create a profit in order for you,to pay the bills and keep doing more goodwork.

Generallymostofusareblessedwithmorethan one talent. However, not all talents cre-ate profit or pay well.

The best way to realise your greatest con-tribution to yourself and others, is to dosomething you love.

You need to ask yourself the following 3questions:

1.What do I dowell? – List all your talents.2.What do peoplewant/need? – List all the

things that people want, that fit with yourtalents.

3. What lasting value would I be adding toother people’s lives or circumstances by giv-ing them what they want/need? (By answer-ing this, you’ll seewhichofyour talents couldmake the biggest positive impact).

Your “purpose” will manifest through an-sweringtheabove.Weareallgiftedinsomewayandwe all have somethingwe can offer others.

The key is offering the talent(s) whichwouldmake themost difference. In business, the biggest profit is found where the greatestneeds are met.

Atwork, it is generally those that canmakethe biggest difference that get paid the best.

Set out with purpose, do what you love, serve others and the rewards will follow.

Nextweekwe look at goal setting andharness-ing talent to reach the greatest heights possible.

Purpose shouldsuit and serve

PEFASOCCERREPORT: FRANCOIS J. ROTHNER

Hearts loseunbeaten recordat fortress TheValley

YAH, WELL, no fine. That’s as good a way asany to start a column, isn’t it? Surely it is aftera week in which Frans Steyn walks away fromSpringbok rugby, and soccer World Cup she-naniganscontinuewithQatarallegedlypromis-esuntoldmillions inexchange foraFIFAprom-ising that the country be guaranteed the rightto hold the 2022 soccer World Cup?

So what else is new? Four years ago it wasrevealed that, for a price, Bafana Bafana wereguaranteed good results in warm-up interna-tionals before hosting the 2010 World Cup.

SoFrancois Steynhas turnedhis back on theSpringboks over a contractual dispute invol-vingmoneywith the SARugbyUnion.Withouteither sidewilling to disclose details, SARUhasadmitted it is at least partly at fault. In fairnessto Steyn the question must be asked. Why dida major organisation like SARU allow itself tofall into a contractual disputewithoneof its topperformers in the first place?

On the other hand is money (apparentlySteyn is not short of a bob or two) really thatimportant? The matter is certain to be ironedout soon anyway.

So the hefty flyhalf-cum-centre, cum-fullbackhas turnedhis back on the Springbokbadge. Sowhat? He’s not irreplaceable. As big as he is, heisn’tbiggerthanthegame. Ifyouwerewatchingthe Springboks’ mostly praiseworthy 38-16drubbingofWales inDurban lastSaturday, youmay have noticed an encouraging test debut inmidfield by Jan Serfontein, a youngster just in-to his 20s.

Apart from anything else Serfontein showedhe’sanatural centreanda lotmorecomfortablein midfield than veteran wing, JP Pietersen, who is doing his best to seal the midfield gap

left by injury to regular centreandBokcaptain,Jean de Villiers.

Point is: if Frans Steyn continues to turn hisbackonnational selection, hewon’tbe thatbad-lymissed.Ourrugbyhasplentyofdepth inmid-field. Indeed, with the likes of just two whospring to mind in Damian de Allende and JJEngelbrecht leading a healthy pack of othermidfielders, our cup runneth over, as they say.So let Francois go his merry way. Let it be onrecord too, though, that if he continues to excelfor the Sharks and is worth his place in the na-tional setup, that sentiment would be right be-hind Heyneke Meyer including him in hisWorld Cup squad next year.

But let’s look rather at the encouraging as-pects of theBoks’ performance against themenfromWales.Forastarthowabout the firsthalf’sfour tries and Willie le Roux leading the waywitha cabinet full ofOscars. Not too farbehind:Bryan Habana, Fourie du Preez, Victor Mat-field, the pack as a whole, Carnal Hendrickswith a try on debut. Brickbats? A few: a dropin intensity in the second half, some muddleddefence against a team thatwas just about deadand buried. Meyer, no doubt, will be asking forabettershowingintheseareascomeSaturday’ssecond Test.

Meanwhile, Bafana did well enough on theirAustralasian tour despite nine players wrig-glingoutof the tour.Whynotmakeitcompulso-ry for all players to sign contracts agreeing torepresent their country when selected, unlessproven to be medically unfit.

Come to think of it if rugby playerswere gov-erned by a similar rule that placed countryahead of franchises, Bok rugby would be a lotbetter off.

AS the football world cup kicks in, Engenlaunched a new soccer programme on June10, called Engen Champs of Champs, at theGelvandale Sports complex, where the win-ners of each region’s Under-17 Engen Knock-out Challenge will be flown to Gauteng tocompete to be Cup winners.

The announcement was made by GroupSponsorship Manager at Engen, Brad Bergh,at the launch of South Africa’s most prestig-ious U-17 youth football tournament.Engen said the new event emphasises the

growth and demand of the tournament andwould take place in October hosted by En-gen’s new partner, SuperSport United Foot-ball Club, in Pimville, Soweto.“After 10 years of our involvement in

youth development football, we felt it wastime to take the next step in terms of creatinga new event where South Africa’s best com-pete against each other in the Champs ofChamps, elevating the level of the tourna-ment to a much higher level.“The Under-17 Engen Knockout Challenge

and Engen Champs of Champs offer a greatexperience for all, where the general publicis invited to come and enjoy the entertain-ment by local DJs, food and refreshments, aswell as some activities for the youngsters,”

Bergh said. The Under-17 Engen Knockout Challenge,

aimed at unearthing soccer starts of the fu-ture, will be played from June through to Au-gust in five regions - Port Elizabeth, Bloem-fontein, Durban, Gauteng and Cape Town.Sixteen teams in each of the five regions

play a total of 48 matches over three days. Ineach region the teams will be divided intogroups and play a round robin format beforethe knockout stage.City Lads from theNewBrighton township

hold the record of being the only team in PEto have played in every tournament since its

inception. And in each time they have fea-tured in either the finals or semi-finals. Lastyear they lost in the finals to Victoria ParkHigh School who will once again be playingin the tournament.“This is a great opportunity for our young-

sters who would otherwise be lost to socialevils like drugs and gangsterism,” Safa-NMBpresident Monde Mhlethwa said.“The metro does not have a professional

team andmost of our talented youngsters areat a dead end. It is at tournaments like thesethat they can showcase their talent and hope-fully be spotted by scouts,” said Mhlethwa.
