A Message from the Principal

Once again it was a pleasure to meet with many school

parents at the Parent Teacher evening to discuss your child’s

progress. It was especially good to meet with some parents

who were only visiting Malaysia for a short time.

There is much evidence that shows positive communication

between parents and teachers helps improve academic

performance.

It is important for your children to see that you value their

education and are interested in the things they do each day.

While the teacher’s role is to teach, you are the person who

best understands your child. You know what stimulates and

motivates them. You know their struggles. You know if there

are any other issues which might be affecting their learning at

school. Communication with your child’s teacher is essential to

make sure your child is best catered for in the classroom.

Effective communication can be time consuming but it is

essential. As a parent, you do not need to wait for Parent

Teacher Night if you have a concern. Please use the student

diary to write a note to the class teacher or to make an

appointment to see them. Geoff Clark

Cross Border Campus Study Tour

As well as Pegasus International School, Kinderworld has 14

schools in Vietnam. This month students from two sister

schools, SIS Van Phuc and SIS Ciputra, visited our school as

part of a cross-cultural tour.

Kinderworld offer annual study tours and cultural immersion

programmes in which students can enhance their

understanding of other cultures and nurture friendships

throughout the world. Through our partner schools students

have the opportunity to be part of a vibrant international

learning community.

Our visiting group from Vietnam joined the students at Pegasus

in classroom and sporting activities. They also spent time at

local attractions including Legoland, a fruit farm and batik

factory.

As part of our cultural awareness program Pegasus students

wore traditional clothing to school on the Wednesday. We are

very privileged to be able to share so many different

experiences together. Embracing cultures enriches our world

and broadens our world view.

Curriculum

International Primary School Leaving Examination

We are proud that Pegasus International School is the only

school registered in Malaysia as a testing centre for the iPSLE

examinations. The iPSLE provides a recognized certification of

the knowledge and achievement that pupils have attained in

their Primary education. It is the standard examination in

Singapore.

The Centre Manager, Mr. See, congratulated Wong Ka Yikk

and Wazirah Binti Amber as the first candidates to sit for these

examinations in English, Mathematics and Science.

The students are to be commended for the sustained effort they

have made in preparing for these examinations and we wish

them success with their results.

Becoming a Mensa.

Problem solving plays an important role in Mathematics and

has a prominent role in the education of all students. Solving

problems requires higher order thinking and contributes to the

conceptual development of students.

It creates an opportunity for the teacher to assess what the

students are learning and where they are experiencing

difficulty. Many problems can be approached by students in

multiple ways using different solution strategies and encourage

student engagement and discourse.

Rebecca, Hannah and Shola turned a problem solving exercise

into fun when they increased their understanding of

sequencing.

Nursery / Kindergarten / Primary 1

Communication, caring and learning together, occurred in a

different setting when the Nursery / Kindergarten / Primary 1

classes changed out of their uniforms into pyjamas for a party.

The party was to recognize the changeover of teachers for the

Primary class.

Games which involved following instructions, organization and

talking about favourite things kept the children busily interacting

with each other before they watched a popular English cartoon.

Encouraging Literacy

Yuei Matsuda (Primary 3) is to be commended for the great

Library display he prepared on Sharks. He also researched

Sharks as part of his class assessment.

What are whale sharks?

The whale shark is a widespread species - they are found in

warmer waters in several oceans - the Atlantic, Pacific and

Indian Oceans.

What food does it eat?

Whale Sharks eat small crustaceans, schooling fishes,

phytoplankton, zooplankton and algae.

How big can it grow?

The whale sharks grow up to lengths of 40 feet (12 meters).

How long can it live?

Whale sharks can live a long time.

How does it breed?

While some species breed differently, whale sharks do not

breed until they are in their twenties.

Donation to the Library

The school has been extremely grateful for all the book

donations it has received for the Library. This month Mr. Au

Yong generously donated nonfiction books from his personal

collection for the benefit of our students.

Of particular interest are books on archictecture, design,

culture, history, music and art. He has also donated maps and

learning materials for the classroom.

Students are encouraged to extend their knowledge of our

world beyond the classroom and we trust that these extra

books will assist in this.

Bubble, bubble, toil and trouble

Secondary 1 investigated the fundamental chemistry concepts

of states of matter: melting, evaporation, condensation,

boiling, and vapor pressure, in relation to the particulate nature

of matter. They conducted experiments based on these

concepts to explain everyday phenomena.

Students observed that the air blown into bubbles takes the

shape of the bubble. The liquid film surrounding the bubble

changes in shape to contain the growing amount of air.

However, the bubble wand does not change in shape no

matter how hard it is blown.

Our Virtue Program: Courage

Primary 5/6

Courage is defined as the ability to do something that you are

frightened of or to be strong in the face of pain or grief.

Narihiro Okada and Wong Ka Yikk showed courage when they

sang a famous Japanese folk song at Assembly.

Sakura, Sakura, blossoms waving everywhere Clouds of glory fill the sky, Mist of beauty in the air,

Lovely colours floating by, Sakura, Sakura Let all come singing.

This melody and text date back to medieval times and is

commonly sung to celebrate the national flower.

Primary 3/4

Felipe Jun Iglesia recently joined our school and is in the

Primary 3 class. In assembly, the class dramatized what is is

like to be a new student in a school. The drama depicted

students being unfriendly, until one student decided to stand

up for what is right and explained to the other students how

their negative behavior was unacceptable.

In doing this, the student showed great courage and was able

to change the attitude of the other students so that they

became more welcoming to the new student.

Hannah

The Malaysian National Anthem is a song of courage and

hope. It calls us to remember how the freedom of this country

was so courageously won. It provides hope that Malaysia will

be united and progressive, bringing blessing and happiness to

the people.

At Pegasus we begin our weekly school assemblies by singing

the National Anthem in Bahasa.

This week Hannah Yeoh Xin Yi courageously learned the

music and accompanied us on the keyboard.

Hannah, a Secondary 1 student, has been playing the piano

for 11 years and is a dedicated student who regularly practises

up to 4 hours a week.

She recently gained a distinction in the Trinity Examinations at

Grade 5 level.

Cultural events celebrated by our students

Ramadan (by Afiqah Iman)

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar.

Every day during this month, Muslims around the world spend

the daylight hours in a complete fast.

During the blessed month of Ramadan, Muslims all over the

world abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs

during the daylight hours. During Ramadan, every part of the

body must be restrained. The tongue must be restrained from

backbiting and gossip. The eyes must restrain themselves

from looking at unlawful things. The hand must not touch or

take anything that does not belong to it. The ears must refrain

from listening to idle talk or obscene words. The feet must

refrain from going to sinful places.

The most interesting part is we can perform the Qiyamulai

prayer. Our past sin will be forgiven and this is how we are

born again, now free from all sins and mistakes.

Tanabata

According to an ancient Chinese legend, on the 7th day of the

7th lunar month, two star-crossed lovers are able to traverse

the sky and meet. This date in Japan is called Tanabata, and

also known as the Star Festival.

A popular tradition during Tanabata is to write wishes on small

strips piece of paper. The wish is often written in the form of

poetry and then hung on bamboo.

Ami Takahashi and Chihiro Okada along with many other

students made a wish to hang on our Library tree. A very

popular wish made by the students was that they become

proficient in speaking English. We sincerely hope their wishes

are quickly granted.

Advanced Chinese Class

Classroom learning in Advanced Chinese is based on the

Singapore curriculum. It includes oral, grammar, writing,

comprehension and reading.

To enhance the student’s learning, Chinese culture, tradition

and the history of China, as well as significant people, are

embedded into the curriculum.

Gan Xin Hui, Alicia Shu Qi Tan and Chong Yan Hao learned

about calligraphy, an ancient writing style and art form.
