Cost of mural stirs up debateBY GABRIELLE STUART
A South Brighton artist has been caught up in a dispute over whether a $30,000 mural in the New Brigh-ton mall should have gone ahead.
Artist and graphic designer Marie Ockleford created the design for the mural free of charge, because she wanted to do something special for her own community.
The city council paid Auckland company Rockbind $30,000 to create the mural. The company has worked on several Christchurch street art works, including the mural near the Bridge of Remem-brance.
But the mural cost the city council more than $30,000, and the community reaction to it has not been positive.
Miss Ockleford said it had been discouraging to hear of a lot of
negative feedback about the mural, particularly on social media.
“The reaction has been mixed, and there are quite a lot of negative comments. But I suppose you’re always going to get that with public art.”
She said most of the comments were about the cost of the mural.
Members of the Burwood-Pegasus Community Board said they had also heard negative feedback from the community about the cost of the mural.
Board member Tim Sintes said he wasn’t against the mural itself, but the money could have been used to solve more urgent prob-lems in the area.
“It’s good, it’s fantastic to have anything done here, but funds are obviously tight right now and there are so many issues we need to deal with.”

Six Shirley Boys’ High School students took the trip of a life-time in a plane used to transport people to Antarctica, as part of a VIP Antarctica Day experience prize.
The Year 12 geography stu-dents won the trip after taking part in a NZ IceFest competition, where they had to research an Antarctic topic and present it through social media.
Students Josh Wildy, Adam Koch, Jake Chalklen, Harrison Allen, Patrick Rodger and Jordan Kahika were chosen, as well as one of their teachers.
On the day, two camera crews, 26 students, one teacher and three Royal New Zealand Air Force crew were packed into the cargo hold of the RNZAF C130 Hercules plane.
There were no windows to
look out of, so take-off was a surprise.
But after a minute of climbing, the cargo doors were opened and the students were able to look down on Christchurch below, and visit the cockpit to see out the pilot’s office window.
All the students who experi-enced the flight were left in awe.
Through the experience the students were also able to get up close to the US Air Force Globe Master, one of the largest planes in the world.
They also had a special tour of
NZ IceFest in Cathedral Square, a guided tour of the Interna-tional Antarctic Centre tourist attraction and a behind the scenes look at Antarctica New Zealand, the Government agency in charge of all New Zealand’s involvement with Antarctica.
Awesome flight for studentsHIGH-FLYERS: Shirley Boys’ High School geography teacher Mike Skin-ner and students Jake Chalklen, Jor-dan Kahika, Harrison Allen and Adam Koch were able to fly in a Royal New Zealand Air Force Hercules plane as part of a NZ IceFest prize.
• From page 1In February, the city council
allocated $30,000 from its Subur-ban Centres Transitional Budget, for temporary improvements to Brighton Mall.
City council urban design regeneration unit manager Caro-lyn Ingles said just over $30,000 was paid to the contractor for the materials and installation of the mural.
She said the community board was updated on the progress of the plans in July and September, and gave positive feedback.
But chairwoman Andrea
Cummings said the community board was briefed about designs for the mural, but not how much it would cost.
She tried over several months to find out that information.
She said she had been told only a portion of the money would be used for the mural, with the rest paying for wider improvements to the mall.
Miss Ockleford said the con-tractors flew down from Auck-land to paint the mural, which took about two weeks.
She said that the business was the only one of its kind in the
country.“Because (the mural) has to
be so hard-wearing to be able to survive the traffic, they use quite specialised materials.”
She believed the mural could last about five years before it began to wear away.
Although the feedback from the community had not all been positive, she said she was still happy with the way the mural turned out.
“The really cool thing is seeing the scale of it. It’s pretty amazing to see something I took from my journal and just drew with a
pen – and now it’s huge and I can stand on it.”
She said the concept of the design was “sea meets land”.
“And the big, bright geometric shapes represent the people, because people in New Brighton are a really bright, eclectic bunch, and they come in all sorts of shapes!”
Opinions divided over $30,000 spent on mural

The accolades keep coming for young musician Frances Daly.
The year 12 Marian College student recently received the Best Original Composition award at the CPIT JazzQuest for her piece Defective Detective.
The award was followed with further kudos at the Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival held in Blenheim, where Frances received
the Royal New Zealand Air Force Band Adjudicator’s Choice trophy for her performance on piano for the school jazz band.
Frances has been committed for many years to her musical craft, and will sit her grade eight piano exams later this year.
Frances’ long-term goal is to make music her career, either in New Zealand or overseas.

Roading changes needed around merged schoolBY GABRIELLE STUART
Significant roading changes could be made around the new site of the merged Rawhiti School on Leaver Tce.
From 2016 the site will be the base of the merged school, formed through the closure of North New Brighton, Central New Brighton and Freeville schools.
The North New Brighton School will close in December, and new school buildings will be built on the site to accommodate 500 to 600 children.
Rawhiti School board of trustees chairwoman Chrissie Williams (right), said that would have a big impact on the community.
“We want to be a good neigh-bour, and that does require a lot of planning in advance.”
She would like to see the city council make significant changes to the roads in the area.
Those include putting in park-ing restrictions, traffic islands and pedestrian crossings on streets
around the site.“We want to work with council
to reduce the chaos at the school gate, and to prevent people from parking across driveways and causing problems for people liv-ing there. And, of course, to keep the children safe.”
She will make a deputation to the Burwood-Pegasus Commu-nity Board tonight, hoping to get
their support for the plans.“We want them to be the main
advocate to the council for us. Through their own submissions to council on the long-term plan they can put a lot of these things forward, and they also have del-egation to approve parking and those types of changes.”
Community board chair-woman Andrea Cummings said she would need to speak with the board before she could say if they would include the proposed changes in a long-term plan submission.
But she said that some changes would be needed in the area.
“It makes sense because it is going to be a big school, so it will need some significant roading changes.”
The merged school will run next year from the Freeville and Central New Brighton schools sites, until the new school is opened.
Staffing decisions for the new school are expected to be made early next month.

So when did you start in the job?I’ve only been there for three weeks,
so I’m still very new. But it’s a role I have done before in Christchurch Central. I was actually raised in Brighton and I started my policing in Brighton so I love the community and it’s amazing to be back.
So tell me about the work you were doing in Christchurch Central?
I was working as the youth services supervisor, so I was working with staff to run programmes like the school community programmes, which teach children how to manage things like keeping themselves safe, road safety and bullying. I also supervised the youth aid section, which works with both young people and their families to try to help young people in the court system and outside it. Young people do make mistakes, and the aim is to try to help them avoid making worse mistakes. We also work with families of young offenders.
So you’re working in the same role in New Brighton?
Yes. The role has been a little bit vacant here for a while, so there’s been
no one in the position here for some time, but it has been covered by other areas. One of the focuses at the mo-ment is to make different areas more self-sufficient, which I think is a really good thing. I also cover Rangiora and Kaiapoi, so it keeps me busy.
That is a really big area to cover. It’s a large area but I’ve got very
capable staff. In my role I’m kind of just the glue holding it together, I’m not doing anything new myself. I’m lucky because I have great staff, so that makes it run really smoothly.
How many staff do you manage? At New Brighton I have soon to be
five staff. There is one at Kaiapoi and three at Rangiora.
So, practically, what does your day to day work usually look like?
That’s a good question – what do I do? (Laughs). I run Rangatahi Court, which is a new initiative at the Nga Hau e Wha Marae. I work as a pros-ecutor there, and that involves a lot of work around Maori families, so it is quite cool work to do. I am involved in a lot of little projects, working with families and supporting them, and I seem to run flat out all the time.
What do you love the most about the role?
Making a difference in young
people’s lives. All of our staff love what they do because you can make signifi-cant changes in young people’s lives. You can give them that opportunity to change the direction they’re heading in. As far as the school work goes, that’s about empowering people to make the right decisions by showing them what their choices are, and that they have a choice.
I know there have been issues with youth in New Brighton particularly over a number of years. Do you think the sort of work you’re doing is particularly needed in the area?
I don’t think it’s particularly a New Brighton problem. Those sorts of challenges come around all the time, and it is just part of what we do. Young people behave like that for a variety of reasons, so there is no one reason and no one solution to that sort of issue, and our role as police is just one aspect of the solution. We’re lucky in that one of the good things about Brighton is that people are involved in the community, and that is a real strength in dealing with this sort of issue.
Does the fact you’re from the area yourself make this role particularly personal to you?
It does in that I want Brighton to be successful, so I don’t want it to be seen as an area where there are problems. I want it to be seen as a place where people are safe, and as a cool place to live and visit. So I suppose I am particularly passionate about the com-munity.
Have you always wanted to work with youth?
Officer set out to change
ON THE JOB: New Brighton youth services co-ordinator Sergeant Andrea Dahl crosses Ferry Rd with Woolston School pupil Zaiyon Sinclair, 11, during a road safety in schools programme earlier this year.
Sergeant Andrea Dahl recently started in a new role in youth services, working from the New Brighton station. She spoke to Gabrielle Stuart about the challenges, rewards and stories from her years on the beat.

young people’s livesWhen I started as a police
officer it hadn’t been foremost in my mind, but over the years I have figured out that’s what I’m good at. I love young people, I love working with them and I find them really inspiring.
How many years have you worked as a police officer?
For 17 years, coming up 18.Over that time, what have
been some of the experiences that stood out to you?
That’s a tough one to answer. There are so many that stand out for so many different reasons. One of the things I did find re-ally challenging was when I was working as an iwi liaison officer for a while, working particularly with cases of cot death. I was working with families after a child had died, and it was horrible but incredibly satisfying to be able to help them.
Another would be working with families who were seriously affected by family violence, so getting involved in their lives and helping them to understand what had happened, and helping them look forward to a positive future.
There are also some amazing stories you hear in my work at the moment, of young people who have really turned their lives around, and gone on to do some great things. And then there’s the other side, when young people you work with end up making wrong choices.
After 17 years, you must have seen a lot of that.
Definitely. You also see some of those kids now having children of their own, and one of the saddest things is seeing the same prob-lems crop up again.
Do you have children of your own?
Yes, I have three grown-up daughters, who are all fabulous and gorgeous, and two grandchil-dren.
So you started work with the police after having your family?
That’s right. Were your kids part of your
motivation to become a police officer?
I actually always wanted to be a police officer. I like variety, and within the police it’s like a career within a career, there are so many choices and different paths you can take. I always thought originally I was too short to ever be an officer. But that hasn’t been a problem.
What did you do before you signed up?
I was working in gyms, and also doing sales and marketing stuff.
Have you spent your whole life in Canterbury?
Yes. I’m living in Lyttelton now, but I was raised in Brighton right up until I was a young adult, and I love the place. How can you beat a place like that, with the commu-nity and the beaches?
It sounds like you keep pretty busy, but do you have any hob-bies outside work?
I paddle waka ama (a tradition-al outrigger canoe) and I do cross fit, so I keep pretty active.
What are the hours like on the job?
They’re variable. They’re not usually too bad, but it depends what’s required and things can change at a moment’s notice, but that’s just the nature of the jobs.
Work wise, are there any other roles you would like to work in the future?
I’m really lucky to have been able to do a lot of work that I have loved, and I have the opportunity to go back to it. I enjoyed work-ing with family violence and I like working in the Maori community, so there are a lot of things I would be happy to do again. I think the common theme is that I really like working in communities.
What quality or characteristic do you think is most important to be a good police officer?
Fairness. Because as a police of-ficer the community is asking you to do what they see as right but you also need to work with the of-fender and be fair to them, so you have to keep a really open mind.
KEEPING ACTIVE: Sergeant Dahl enjoys waka ama, traditional style outrigger canoeing, in her free time.
BY GABRIELLE STUART
Police believe new measures will reduce problems with youth in the area.
Over the past several months, a group of three or four youths have been “individually and collectively playing up” in the area, acting Senior Sergeant Dave Robertson said.
He said that one of the youths was currently going through the youth court process, while Child Youth and Family, Youth Aid and several police partners were actively working with the young people and their families.
In one reported incident earlier this month, a 14-year-old boy who was busking on Seaview Rd was robbed by a boy of a similar age.
When the busker resisted, he was punched in the nose and his money was taken.
Acting Senior Sergeant Rob-ertson said the incident was still being investigated, but there was very good camera surveillance of the area, so he believed it could be resolved.
He said that people did not always report incidents, and that made it difficult for police to act.
The New Brighton Community Safety Partnership, which is made up of representatives of police and several community groups, has put forward several proposals aimed at making the community safer.

Centenarian on final journeyBY GABRIELLE STUART
A man who had the rare honour of turning 100 on Christmas Day has died.
Noel Allen was well known in the eastern suburbs for his involvement in the community and his sense of humour.
He was born on Christmas Day, 1913, in Nelson, the youngest in a family of four children.
After starting school in Nelson, his family moved to Palmerston North, then to New Brighton and Linwood.
After leaving school, he worked as a messenger boy delivering books by bike for a bookshop, and then became an apprentice motor mechanic. At one stage, he worked for International Harvester, but said he didn’t enjoy this as it was too dirty and greasy.
For recreation, he played hockey, went cross-country running and, with Win whom he was to later marry, learned to play Hawaiian guitar. He was always interested in motor bikes and used to take Win riding in his sidecar.
Noel and Win married on 16 March 1940, during World War II. Noel enlisted in the Air Force and served as an aircraft mechanic in the Solomon Islands.
After the war, Noel joined NAC as an aircraft engineer and worked there until he retired. During that time, NAC merged with TEAL to become Air New Zealand. For many years he biked daily from Avonside to the airport, sometimes
falling off his bike on icy winter roads.
Noel and Win were the parents of four children who have happy memories of outings to the beach on Sunday afternoons, and camp-ing holidays.
On becoming a grandparent, he was a hands-on grandad, taking his grandchildren rowing on the Avon River, or to the park or beach. He had eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
In his later years, Noel and Win travelled the country in the various
cars he owned. He was known for his Mazda with its Hi D Hi numberplate.
Noel and Win made many trips to visit their children in Hamilton, and when Win was no longer able to travel with him, Noel would travel alone, the last time being in October last year when he was aged 99.
Noel liked cars and enjoyed driv-ing. He said long-distance driving and crossing on the inter-island ferry never fazed him.
Noel and Win were actively as-sociated with the Wainoni Method-
ist Church. As his deafness became more profound, he said he couldn’t hear a word of the Sunday services, but he was seldom absent from his usual seat because he enjoyed the friendship.
Associated with the Wainoni Methodist Church is the Wainoni-Avonside Community Services Trust (WACST) that provides a range of community and social services including Sit & Be Fit in which Noel and Win both partici-pated with enthusiasm.
Noel was a popular member at WACST and his birthday became a
special occasion at the annual end-of-year celebrations.
Trust coordinator Betty Chap-man said it had been an honour and a privilege to have known him.
“I have only known Noel for 12 and a half years of his long life, but he sure has made a huge impact in my life and I am sure that statement is true for many of us.”
Noel spent several months in Burwood Hospital before his death, after falling and injuring himself.
The funeral for Noel was held at Harewood Crematorium.

Sixteen-year-old cancer survi-vor Aimee-Chantelle Gough has been given the opportunity to take the trip of a lifetime – and she would like to bring her mum.
The Aranui High School stu-dent hosted a German exchange student, Seike Gruning last year.
Seike lived with the family for eight months, and was there when Aimee-Chantelle was diag-nosed with synovial sarcoma, a tissue cancer.
The girls were the same age, and Aimee-Chantelle said the foreign student became “one of my besties”.
She was there when Aimee-Chantelle was diagnosed and supported her through the se-ries of tests, but had to leave last year just before Aimee-Chantelle started her chemotherapy treat-ment.
Two months ago, Aimee-Ch-antelle got a message from Ger-many.
Seike and her family had raised enough for return tickets for the Aranui student to visit them.
“I was really excited, I couldn’t believe it,” Aimee-Chantelle said. “It will be a chance in a lifetime.”
She plans to travel to Germany in May next year, visiting several
cities in Europe, and stopping over in several countries along the way.
But she wants to bring her mother along, who she said had been through a lot and would “love it”.
To do that, she’s taken on the challenge of raising $4500, which would cover the cost of tickets and expenses for her mother.
She has planned two fundrais-ing concerts at the school, roping in musicians from across the city to play over two nights this week.
The concerts will feature musi-cians from all sorts of genres, in-
cluding an acoustic reggae band, an orchestral band, a boy band and contemporary jazz musician.
The concerts will be held on Wednesday and Thursday this week, from 6pm at the Aranui High School hall.
The evenings will start with a meal at 6pm, and the shows will start at 7pm.
Tickets cost $20 including the cost of the meal, and are available at the door on the nights.
For more information or to make a donation, phone Aimee-Chantelle on 021 0241 5606 or email [email protected].
LOVE: Cancer survivor Aimee-Chantelle Gough, 16, is trying to raise enough to bring her mother, Maria Kahukura, with her on a trip to Europe.

Housing workshopHousing New Zealand will hold a community workshop next month on its plans for Aranui social housing. More than 100 new Housing New Zealand homes are to be built in the suburb, with about 50 expected to be completed next year. The meeting will provide a chance for the community to have their say on the plans. It will be held at the Aranui Library on November 4 from 6.30pm.
Road changesChanges could be made at the intersection of Beresford St and Union St, after 14 reported crashes at the intersection over the past five years. The crashes were mostly due to drivers not giving way. The Burwood-Pegasus Community Board will decide tonight whether to make changes at the intersec-tion. Those could include in-stalling stop signs, and remov-ing a traffic island on Beresford St which has been damaged by being hit by vehicles.
CorrectionLast week the Pegasus Post re-ported that the owner of Salt on the Pier asked the city council to have lights at the New Brighton Pier fixed. That was incorrect. Staff at the restaurant reported the problem to the manager of the New Brighton Library, who made the request to the city council to have the lights fixed.

Flood-wary St Albans residents want new culverts.
Edgeware Rd residents have asked the city council for the replacement of culverts at St Albans Creek on Hills Rd, Edgeware Rd and Champion St, in a bid to deter flooding.
Overflow in the area has damaged the culverts, causing a ‘damming effect’ and channelling of water, compromising the ef-fectiveness of the culverts.
The city council is considering repairing the damaged culverts, but some Edgeware Rd residents said more needed to be done.
One Edgeware Rd resident, Andrew Pengelly, said the damaged culverts not only need to be repaired, but also improved, to enable increased flow of water at flood times.
The Land Drainage team will present the Dudley Creek Post Earthquake Remedia-tion Report to the city council on Thursday, which would include discussing options for the culverts.
Land drainage operations manager Sylvia Maclaren spoke to the Shirley-Papanui Community Board regarding the culvert on St Albans Creek.
Ms Maclaren informed the board the Stronger Christchurch Infrastructure Rebuild Team repairs would resume, after being put on hold while the Dudley Stream review was in progress.
The board was reminded that SCIRT
repairs were ‘like for like’ so it was unlikely that any changes to the current culverts would be instigated.
At the meeting, the board decided to con-sider regular maintenance for the culverts, considering the ‘whole of life cost’ of repair.
Mr Pengelly has argued that when it floods, the size of the culverts meant the issue would only continue .
“St Albans Creek is attributed to Dudley Creek. The culvert on the corner of Edge-ware Rd and Champion St – that’s too small to cope with flooding. When it floods it fills with silt. So why not just replace them both?” he said.
Mr Pengelly said the creek was hidden from public view, so people did not realise the importance of it.
“Because it goes through a lot of private properties, the only places you see St Albans Creek is if you have a beer out the back in Merivale, or a walk through English Park,” he said.
Shirley-Papanui Community Board mem-ber Jo Byrne said there were a lot of people affected in the area, but realised it was a city-wide issue.
“I think the flooding issues in Christ-church are so wide-spread and unfortu-nately we need to prioritise with an overall plan for Christchurch, not just one area,” she said.
Mr Pengelly said the area should be included in the Land Drainage Recovery Programme.
Call for new culverts to combat flooding
MEDALISTS: St Andrew’s College head girl Zoe Merrick (centre), with teammates Meg Fisher (left) and Steph Botting, were successful at the Lifesaving World Champi-onships in the south of France recently. They finished second in the women’s single rescue, second with their team in the women’s teams rescue, and third with their team in the women’s mass rescue. Merrick said her time away had been “awesome,” and “such a good experience”.

The Canterbury scholastic surf team had a successful campaign at the national championships in Taranaki, finishing third overall.
In the individual competitions, Conor McLennan, of Christchurch Boys’ High School, won the under-14 boys division.
Conor was new to the national surfing scene and a surprise winner after a solid display of surfing throughout the event.
Harrison Whiteside, of Hagley Community College, is already recognised as one of New Zealand’s top young surfers and was runner- up in the under-18 boys division and unlucky not to win.
He was leading for most of the final but was just pipped in the final minutes by Mt Maunganui’s
Jordan Griffin. Fritha Davis, of Cashmere
High School, placed third in the under-14 girls.
The team had several semi-finalists too, with Max Marshall, Rory Edmonds, Jack Wilson and Moss Thomson all making it through in their divisions.
Marshall scored one of the highest heat totals of the entire event in his quarter final, with 16.37 points of a possible 20.

BY KYLE KNOWLES
A life-long player, coach and pa-tron of the Linwood rugby club was farewelled last week.
Ken Jane first laced up his boots for Linwood’s senior side in the 1940s and for the next 70 years gave his heart and soul to the club only giving up coach-ing in 1995.
‘Jano’ to many, passed away peacefully just short of his 93rd birthday on October 9. The fu-neral was held at the rugby club he gave so much of his time to last Monday.
A hearse took Mr Jane for one final lap of the Linfield rugby ground he spent so many cold winters giving to the club and game of rugby itself.
He was born in Christchurch and a life member of the club and was patron of the club for around 24 years.
Club president Tane Nor-ton said Mr Jane would have watched the most games involv-ing Linwood teams “by miles”. He would be there watching ev-ery team right from the juniors in the morning through to colts, division 2 and the senior side in the afternoon.
Mr Norton said Mr Jane coached every team at the club and was the coach that gave him his first spot in Linwood’s top side.
For more than three decades Mr Norton said every week Mr Jane would go to his house to talk about the weekend’s action.
“It was common knowledge Jano came around to my place every Thursday morning for 34 years to talk about the game.”
Mr Norton said Mr Jane would not only give everything for Linwood but would help out the rugby community across Christchurch.
“Hornby came into the senior competition many years ago and Jane came to training one night and said we are going to show them how to train and there was a protest but Jano said it doesn’t matter were going to help them.”
Mr Norton finished by saying Mr Jane would be sadly missed but never forgotten.
Mr Jane’s partner of 30 years
Jennifer Wilson said he was al-ways part of the rugby club and was famous through the 70s for the coaching of the senior side.
She said he played for the club before coaching and still has photos of him in Linwood teams from those days.
Ms Wilson said it was not always rugby on his mind and enjoyed going over to the West Coast and playing tennis.
“He loved to go gold panning and he enjoyed the bush and
West Coast life. He used to go whitebaiting with friends even though he wasn’t a fisherman”.
Vice president of the New Zealand Rugby Union, David Rhodes was at Mr Jane’s funeral and said he knew him through his dad and would always have a chat to him or a beer at the club whenever he was there.
Mr Rhodes said guys like Mr Jane are vital to rugby clubs around New Zealand and are the foundations of which clubs
are built around.“My thing with Ken was he
was a great coach in the early days. He was the Freddy Allen of Linwood rugby”.
Former Linwood rugby club manager who was at the club for 10 years Norma Eivers said he would be sorely missed by the club after being involved for so long with fundraising and working bees around the club. She said he was a very good club man.

Hearing Technology is fully independent and locally owned since its inception 23 years ago, with clinics in Timaru,
Christchurch, Auckland and Whangarei. The benefit of this is that they fit clients with hearing devices best for them, not best for the company.
What differentiates Hearing Technology from other audiology clinics is the customer-focused service offered. Clients feel safe and supported through diagnosis to make an informed choice. “Our average clientele is 65 years plus. Their visit to the clinic may be their only visit all week,” says John Robertson. “We try and make it special.” Hearing Technology will even pick patients up if they are unable to drive themselves to the clinic, if they live close by.
Hearing Technology utilises the latest wax removal technology. Microsuction is less invasive, removing wax by gentle suction as opposed to the traditional method of syringing out with water, which can be very risky.
While Hearing Technology offer free hearing checks. They promote full diagnostic checks which are more in-depth, recommended by doctors and ear, nose and throat specialists. This investigates the entire hearing system all the way to the brain, to
determine where hearing loss has occurred and what the best treatment options are.
Good funding is available in New Zealand for hearing aids. People with a history of occupational noise exposure can apply to ACC for funding. MOH subsidies of over $1000 are available for everyone else (if fitting both ears).
Tinnitus is a traumatic condition for some people. An extremely specialised area most effectively treated by Auckland University in the north, and now Hearing Technology in the South since one of their audiologists extended their training at the University of Auckland clinic last year. Although there is no cure for tinnitus, there are extremely effective methods of managing the condition.
The Shirley branch has extended opening hours to late night Tuesday and Saturday.
Phone 0800 142 132.
Take advantage of Hearing Technology’s promotional offers: Free wax removal for a year or 12 months’ free batteries (for patients who are already aided); save up to $3000 off a set of hearing aids if purchased before Christmas. Conditions apply for these offers. Contact Hearing Technology for details.
At the age of about 40, I developed pulsatile tinnitus in my right ear. About three months ago I developed pulsatile tinnitus in my left ear and the background tinnitus, which I have had since I was 19, also grew significantly louder. This made me deeply depressed. The high pitched pulsatile tinnitus invaded every aspect of my day and intruded into my sleep. Life was hell. I’ve been using Neuromonics now for
about two months. It still causes me some anxiety from time to time but this is usually momentary. Before, my whole focus was on the sound of the tinnitus. Over time this focus hardwires the brain to “hear” the sound. Neuromonics allows the brain to focus on beautiful, soothing sounds; Neuromonics breaks the circuit so that you’re no longer hardwired to hear the tinnitus. - Brett Clark

Music Tour
Trip to Craigieburn Ranges
Harry Romana, Principal
This year our annual Music Tour started not far away, at North New Brighton Primary School, where we performed a concert before leaving for hurunui college where we performed in the afternoon.
after these two highly successful concerts, we travelled to hanmer Springs where we stayed for the night enjoying the hot pools and beautiful clear night skies. The next day we performed one more excellent concert at Waiau School before returning to school.
Thanks to everyone involved, including all the performers who were exceptionally skilled and well received. Special thanks also to Don MacDonald, sound man extraordinaire, and the other staff who came, and to TJ anae ah Suh whose culinary skills on Thursday night were exceptional.
During the recent term break the level 3 Physical education and level 2 outdoor education students ventured up to the craigieburn ranges to explore.
They had been preparing for an experiential journey of epic proportions that ranged from MTB, to bouldering, to caving. as a group, the student devised strategies to mitigate any foreseeable ‘absolute’ risk factors that would spoil their fun, and made plans to manage their own safety.
however..., the weather took a turn for the worse and so everything was turned on its head. instead we went to castle hill the first day to explore and to do some orienteering. The next day during our hike up helicopter hill we were launched upon by a full scale hail storm which subsided into a heavy blanketing of snow. The boys ran the five km back to the hut to start the fire and make
hot food. That night the plan was to do a ‘solo’; essentially, staying the night alone in a bivvy built out of their own devices out in the middle of a Beech forest. Due to the snow the students decided it would be wiser to make it a ‘grolo’ (group solo) and team up in twos and threes. it was a chilly night of subzero temperatures in what housing NZ would deem to be substandard accommodation but we survived the night and had some great stories to share afterwards. it was then an icy mountain bike down Broken run Ski field in the morning with all our gear to get to the vans and back to castle hill for a sunny lunch and a high stakes game of tag on the rocks.
Thanks to all the Pe staff for making this possible. We had an awesome time.
Jaime callender Year 12
During Term three the Senior Outdoor Education class went to St James to do the 67km Walkway. We had been planning
for it in class for a month, writing an itinerary, menus, finding gear, looking at topographical maps and identifying all the features to look out for as we journeyed. It was a five day journey, carrying packs that were about 20 kg each with all our food, gear and tents in them. There were huts but we decided to rough it, because we’re ‘hard core’.
Some days were a lot longer than others, especially before we got used to carrying our packs!
We had an epic time, even though it was
hard work. In fact we all came out with new nicknames based on our adventures. A couple of the most classic were ‘Fiona’ (one of the girls fell face first into a swamp and got stuck with her pack on top of her), and ‘Quadpod’ (another girl injured her knee on day three and had to walk with sticks for the rest of the time).
The whole journey was really challenging, often walking 10 hours a day but we made the most of our time bonding.
A highlight was definitely seeing all the mustangs.
A big thank you to Mr. Chris Patalano and Mrs. Jose Atkins for supporting us; you were amazing!

Plains FMYear 11 Media Studies recently spent half a day with PlainsFM – christchurch’s only community radio station. The Ncea level 1 Media class had been planning and preparing a radio show as part of their 6 credit internal assessment. The students were working in small groups to research, plan, script and then interview a range of organizations in christchurch working towards re-building the city post-earthquakes.
once at Plains FM, the students were briefed by laura, our production manager, and Dave, the editing guru. The students quickly got to work recording and editing their stories in the studio. By 4.30pm, all members of the class had taken the opportunity to have a go at ‘real-life’ broadcasting. The students worked really well
together to get the stories recorded and have now listened to their work on-air.
a huge thank you must go to PlainsFM for allowing us the opportunity to record our stories in their first-class facilities. The students had a great time and enjoyed the process immensely.
International Day 2014international Day this year had an all-inclusive feel where the ethnicity and country of origin of all of our students were celebrated.
We have students and staff from over 25 different countries and the day was not only about celebrating our cultural diversity, but also our inclusiveness and tolerance of our differences.
our exchange students talked about their countries and about their experiences in New Zealand and our assembly also featured musical items from various countries.
The highlight of the day was the lunchtime festivities with Zorb Ball soccer, music, and chinese , Pasifika and Kiwi food all happening in the central courtyard .
Thank you to all those who participated and particularly to the students who helped out on the day.

Principal’s MessageOctober 2014Mairehau high School continues as a solid viable co-educational school in the east of
christchurch. We are working with other schools, clusters, and community sector groups to develop a plan which will enhance the provision of education for all students in christchurch. all schools want students to access quality education outcomes, to access quality teaching, and quality learning. i wish to share with you an insight into the future of education by providing a progress report on ‘Modern learning Practices’ and collaboration with other schools in christchurch east through learning community clusters (lcc).
We feel we are in a strong position to offer students opportunities which will enable them to become decent worthwhile citizens of the world, people who will contribute to their communities. Students who pass through our school gates, learn in our class rooms, and access technology through our wireless internet provision will be well set in the future.
i trust you are able to pass on to your friends and family, the opportunities that a co-education school such as Mairehau high School can provide for christchurch east.
Towards 2015Mairehau high School is committed to innovation by focusing on strategies which improve learning outcomes for all students. Mairehau high School is now planning for 2015 and beyond. There will be more collaboration and sharing between learning areas, stronger links with the use of BYoD in the classroom, and a modern teaching strategy to engage and improve outcomes for all learners. cross-curricular teaching and learning across all learning teams.
an additional new Dean in the junior school called the curriculum Dean has been appointed for 2015 to support the implementation of key achievement strategies for Year 9 and Year 10 students. These key strategies are aligned to government priorities and include: 2013- 2017 achievement strategy, Building on Success (a focus on our priority learners) strategy, and Positive Behaviour for learning strategy. Mairehau high School is committed to ensuring the success of all students who walk through our school gates.
Mairehau Learning Community Cluster (LCC)Mairehau high School continues to collaborate with other schools. We are working closely with Mairehau Primary, our lady of Fatima, and St Paul’s as part of a learning community cluster. This cluster of schools is focused on transitioning students, e- learning strategies, and priority learners. This work is being coordinated by Deputy Principals in each school. The lcc provides an opportunity for local schools to work together on developing strategies which support student learning and teaching.
Te Tihi o te Matauranga Mairehau high School continues to collaborate with hilmorton hS, hornby hS, aranui hS, linwood college, and catholic
cathedral on a new initiative called “Te Tihi o te Matauranga” (The Peak of Knowledge). The focus of this particular cluster of schools, supported by the greater christchurch Schools Network (gcSN) team, is to develop and implement strategies which provide all students affordable access to Bring Your own Devices (BYoD’s).
Within this cluster of secondary schools a Mairehau high School cluster of contributing schools has been formed, and includes: Mairehau Primary School, Queenspark School, Shirley intermediate, Parklands School, Marshlands School, and our lady of Fatima School which are also part of the strategy to enable all students in each of our contributing schools access to BYoD’s. it would be just fantastic for all students in all of our schools to have opportunities to access the latest technology which will be used in school and home. This intervention is modelled on the Manaiakalani project which has been successfully implemented in auckland.
Mairehau high School intends to host a community consultation meeting on Wednesday 29th october from 6pm – 7:30 pm in the Mairehau high School hall to inform our community of this new innovation for christchurch east.
Christchurch East Secondary Schools (LCC)There are seven secondary schools located in east christchurch: aranui hS, avonside girls’ high School, Shirley Boys’ high School, linwood college, Marian college, catholic cathedral, and Mairehau high School.
We are all excellent schools and provide quality education for students in our community. each school is passionate about improving achievement and learning outcomes for all. in 2013 this cluster of schools proposed to the Minister a vision for the east side of christchurch. This vision is based on the premise of sharing, collaboration and working together to provide every student in the east with access to the curriculum.
There is a lot of work to be done and many decisions to be made about the future of east christchurch. i am confident in ensuring a quality education system for all students who live in the east. Students will have choice, opportunity and access to learning which will enable them to become decent worthwhile citizens of our communities. i am confident in working with other east christchurch secondary schools on the future and quality of Teaching and learning for our communities.
The focus in 2015 for our cluster of christchurch east Secondary Schools is on ‘Modern learning Practices’.
A time to enjoyi wish to conclude by saying that as Principal i get a lot of pleasure watching students enjoying and having fun in their learning. We need to have the ability to laugh at ourselves and others, and a time to enjoy the moment. i was so proud of the students who participated in the recent Mairehau high School talent quest and School music tour. Both events were a lot of fun for students, staff and community. The musical and dance performances were simply fantastic, and well done to all. Thank you to all who helped in the performances.

Chromium Essential for Good HealthBLOOD SUGAR STABILISATION - BRAIN PERFORMANCE - CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTHChromium is an essential trace mineral that appears to be below optimum levels in most people, but researchers believe may be vitally important in maintaining good health. Chromium picolinate is highly absorbable as well as generally more beneficial than other types of chromium.
Chromium Picolinate Supports:- Stabilised blood sugar levels helping prevent & control diabetes- Insulin responsiveness & activity- Good blood circulation, cholesterol & cardiovascular health (Has been shown to reduce major risk factors for cardiovascular disease.)- Brain performance, helps activate specific regions of the brain connected with learning, recall & memory- Lifespan, shown in a controlled rat study to dramatically increase lifespan by 33%

Improve quality of life
Herbal cancer support
Chromium is an essential trace mineral with some surprising health benefits and may have the ability to reduce some of the common health
concerns as we age and increase lifespan. Chromium helps regulate blood sugar
levels and keep them in the normal range. Chromium appears to improve the insulin-responsiveness of the body and enhance the effectiveness of insulin. Chromium deficiency may be an underlying cause or factor in diabetes.
Chromium has been shown to reduce major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Men with the highest chromium levels were found to be 41 per cent less likely to experience a heart attack. Chromium helps stimulate muscle growth,
While working as head nurse of Sisters of Providence Hospital in northern Ontario, Rene Caisse
was told by a patient how she had cured herself of advanced breast cancer by using a herbal formula given to her by a very old Ojibway Indian medicine man. Rene noted the formula down. A short time later Rene heard her mother’s sister had cancer of the stomach and liver with a maximum of six months to live. Rene made up the herbal formula she had noted down and gave this to her aunt who fully recovered from the cancer and lived for another 21 years. Her aunt’s doctor was so impressed he asked Rene if she could use her herbal remedy with some of his hopeless cancer cases. She did, with some exceptional results reported.
muscle strength and supports fat reduction. A controlled study has shown chromium
picolinate to increase brain activity and activate specific regions of the brain improving learning, recall and memory. In another controlled study, laboratory rats that fed chromium picolinate increased their lifespan by 33 per cent.
Some studies have shown chromium picolinate to be more beneficial than other types of chromium. It therefore appears that supplementation with chromium picolinate may be a highly beneficial way to improve our health and possibly even lifespan.
For more information, visit Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy, 110 Seaview Road, New Brighton, or call 388 5757.
In 1922 at age 33, Rene left the hospital and went to Bracebridge, Ontario, Canada, where she began administering the herbal formula, she now called “Essiac TM” (her surname spelt backwards), to all who needed it. Most of her patients were referred by their physicians certifying they had terminal cancers. In many cases, her patients were at the end stage of cancer and many died, but generally they lived longer than predicted, with much less pain and other symptoms. Many however fully recovered with no reoccurrence of the cancer.
After Rene Caisse died in 1978, her formula has become available again.
Cancer is a serious condition. Natural herbal and nutrition therapy may be highly beneficial. Further information is available at Marshall’s Health and Natural Therapy. Phone 388 5757.

The mail bags are full again. This week the tips range from a “feel-like-Cleopatra” face cleaner to a way of keeping your pot plants well watered!
Marie from Rotorua has this tip about face cleaner. “The best face cleaner you can get is ground almonds – from the bulk foods section at Pak ‘N Save. Make a thick paste with milk, and just be-fore using add a quarter teaspoon of salt. Rub fairly gently onto your skin at first as it is abrasive. Wash off with warm water. Makes you face feel like Cleopatra and her bath of milk!” Whoa!
Marie also has this unusual way of titivating silver beet. “Silver beet is our favourite vegetable. Wash well, chop very roughly and steam. Do not boil or overcook. Add a sprinkle of sugar and a sprinkle of nutmeg. Delicious.”
Nikita from Taupo has these tips for introducing fruit and vegeta-bles into the family diet. “Growing up I lived with my grandparents. I always had cereal with tinned fruit for breakfast, two pieces of fruit in my lunch plus a sandwich which normally had lettuce or something like that on it, and a piece of fruit when I got home from school. For dinner nana used to mix po-tato and kumara or pumpkin in a mash, and at least two other veges. So it’s not hard to get lots of fruit
and veges into your diet. I always went along to the supermarket and helped choose the fruit I wanted that week which made me more inclined to eat it. Now it’s just a habit to eat lots of fruit and veges every day.”
Now for another tip on cleaning dentures! J.M.L. from Whangarei writes, “To clean dentures use a teaspoon each of citric acid and baking soda. I found if I mixed these together in a container they hardened, so I keep them in separate containers. Put dentures in cup, add citric acid and baking soda, then cover with hot water. It will fizz when water is added. Rinse with clean water. Occasion-ally you will need to give dentures a clean with a toothbrush and just baking soda.”
Jill from Dannevirke has a sug-gestion for the reader who had cat invasion problems. “I have successfully used Jeyes fluid to deter cats. Sprinkle undiluted on the area targeted by the cats, but be sure to clean the area up first.
You may have to repeat a time or two, but cats hate it. It also works for dogs! Jeyes fluid can be hard to find, but I bought some recently.” [Jeyes Fluid is a multi-purpose cleaner and disinfectant that is used for a wide range of garden and outdoor cleaning jobs.]
J from Paraparaumu has this tip for getting out the last of the cream from containers. “Instead of cutting the top off a hand or body cream container put it in the microwave for about ten seconds, then pour the contents into a new container. Works well for makeup
and other products too.”KASW from Waikanae says,
“Baby wipes are wonderful for removing fly-spots from walls and ceilings.”
John from Whangarei says he got a number of great recycling tips from his latest gardening magazine. “To keep pot plants watered, punch a column of small holes down the side of a thin plastic bottle. Bury it in the pot with the top poking above the soil, and the holes facing the plant. Fill the bottle up and it will act like a reservoir and drip feed the plant.”
Spring is a really busy time in the garden, so please let us know if you have any garden tips you would like to share.

MoneyLet’s stalk about broccoli
‘We think vegetables from yourown garden are delicious anyway, and one does not need to have theexcuse of a ‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoythem.’
IT’S been a while since wetalked about the joys ofcooking vegetables, so wethought it time to have a
little bit of a catch-up. We werereminded about it whenlistening to the author of a newbook advocating a fruit andvegetable diet for two days aweek as a means to betterhealth. We think vegetablesfrom your own garden aredelicious anyway, and one doesnot need to have the excuse of a‘‘fasting diet’’ to enjoy them.
Lilley has a favourite recipefor using up tough broccolistems in a soup. ‘‘You will need:1 onion (diced), 1 large broccolistalk (diced), any left overbroccoli florets, 1 large potato, 1vegetable stock cube dissolvedin 2 cups water, 1 tsp butter, 1/4cup milk or cream, 1/4 cupcheese (optional), salt andpepper. Saute onion in butteruntil clear. Add broccoli andpotato. Cover with vegetablestock and simmer for 30minutes until very tender.Blend and season. Reheat witha little milk or cream. Sprinklewith cheese if you like.’’
Another reader has afavourite lemon butter toppingfor broccoli. ‘‘Simply add 12tbsp of lemon juice to 115g ofmelted butter. Mix in a littlesalt and pepper to taste. Stirtogether and pour over cookedbroccoli. Serve immediately.’’
What about these tips forgreen beans with a difference.‘‘Slice the beans and cook inwater. Add a packet of onionsoup mix and slicedmushrooms. Delicious!’’
Another great way to cookalmost any vegetable is astempura, which is a classicJapanese dish of deep friedbattered vegetables (likezucchini, onions, eggplants, carrots, green peppers, sweetpotatoes, string beans, broccoli, mushrooms). Vegetables with avery high water content aregenerally not suitable, however, as they tend to releasewater into the batter whilecooking. The veges need to becut thin enough to cook in thesame time it takes the batter tobecome crispy.
To make the batter you need1 cup plain flour, 1 egg, and 1cup ice cold water. Beat the eggin a bowl and stir in the icedwater. Add the flour and mixlightly with a wooden spoonhandle or chopstick to avoidover mixing (having lumps inthe batter is a hallmark oftempura). Dip in the vegetablesand deep fry in clean oil at180C, turning occasionally
until the batter is crisp andlight golden. Eat immediatelyafter cooking, while the batteris still crispy. With agarnishing of rock salt, lemonor lime juice, or with dips, tempura is a wonderful starter. It can also be used as a sidedish, especially with fish.
Lorraine has a tip forsilverbeet. ‘‘This is a usefulway to use as little or as muchsilverbeet as you like. I use fourleaves of silverbeet choppedfinely in a batter mixture of 3/4cup flour and 1 & 1/2 tsp bakingpowder. Whisk 1 or 2 eggs, addflour and baking powder, andmilk to thin, then the greens.Fry in a little hot oil. It’s lovelywith tomato sauce, whichshould appeal to children.’’
Kris has a tip for orangepeel. ‘‘I don’t like to throw
things away. I even ‘recycle’citrus peel! I dry the peel on aplate when using the oven. After it is dry I grate or crush itand store the ‘spice’ in anairtight jar and use it in bakingto add flavour.’’
DB says, ‘‘When vegetablesbecome wilted (carrots, broccoli, lettuce, beets, celery, etc) trim the stem end slightlyand soak the limp vegetable inwarm water for an hour ormore. You will find thevegetables will become firmand fresh ready for use.’’

Coconut jelly with passionfruit
While jelly is usually associated with children’s birthday parties, there is also a whole range of sophisticated jelly desserts that are great for grown-ups.
Ingredients400 ml Coconut cream300 ml Cream½ cup Sugar1 tsp Vanilla essence/extract1½ tsp Gelatine8 Passionfruits
DirectionsPlace coconut cream, cream and sugar in a small saucepan over a medium heat. Stir until sugar dissolves, then remove pan from the heat and stir in vanilla extract. Place 1/4 cup cold water in a small heat-proof bowl. Sprinkle over the gelatine and stir to combine. Leave for 2 minutes. Heat a small amount of water in a saucepan until simmering, then remove from heat and sit the bowl of gelatine in the pan (without get-ting any of the water in the bowl) until the gelatine is completely liquid. Mix the liquid
gelatine into the coconut mixture. Pour the coconut mixture into four small ramekins. Refrigerate overnight or until set. Scoop out passionfruit pulp and gently mix in a bowl until loose. Turn the coconut jelly out onto dessert plates and drizzle with passionfruit pulp.
Tip: To help turn jellies out, sit ramekins on a warm, wet tea towel for 1 or 2 minutes, then run a knife around the edges of ram-ekins to loosen.

GARDENING
Grow the classic salad cucumberBY TOD PALENSKI
When I think about what makes a classic summer salad or sandwich, the telegraph cucumber is first to spring to mind.
Subtly sweet, crisp, and refreshing. If that isn’t enough to tempt you, they’re also high in Vitamin C and super hydrating.
If you want to pick yours straight from the garden this summer, rather than fight your way through the skin-tight plastic wrap that so often accompa-nies the store-bought variety, now’s the time to get planting.
First, grab your telegraph cucumber seedlings. Look for a warm, sunny and dry spot in your garden.
Dig in some compost or leftover potting mix to the soil, making sure it’s friable or breaks up in your hand. Then, plant your seedlings.
The telegraph likes something to cling on to so, for best results, either place them near a trellis or similar frame, or use a simple stake.
To encourage fruiting, I like to grow mine next to a bee-friendly plant like lavender. This encourages pollination and, subsequently, fruiting.
If pollination continues to be a problem (by that I mean the flowers fall off but no fruit develops), touch the pollen on each plant with a paintbrush, which will spread the pollen from one flower to the next.
I’ve also been told, though haven’t yet tried, you can do the same with an electric toothbrush minus the toothbrush head. Magic.
Around 10 to 12 weeks after planting, you should have a plentiful bounty of cylindrical fruit to add a refreshing touch to your summer fare.REFRESHING: Cucumber likes a warm, dry spot in the garden.
HEALTHY: Telegraph cucumbers are super hydrating.• More gardening, page 25

GARDENING
BY TOD PALENSKI
I’ve often wondered if I added up the number of hours I spend watering the garden each summer, what the exact total would come to?
I’m sure the answer would surprise me. Imagine what else I could be doing with that time? Enjoying a well-earned drink on the deck springs to mind.
That’s why I like plants and flowers that tend to look after themselves. Like the col-ourful gazania, for example. This Southern-African native prefers conditions that are hot, dry, windy and sunny – the perfect plant for a long New Zealand summer.
Because of this, it’s best to position them in a free-draining area – along the side of your house, near your letterbox or, if you’re lucky enough, outside your beach house.
Gazania will add a splash of summer colour, producing flowers in hot shades of orange, red, yellow and cream – colours that also look stunning in pots. In fact, they’re perfect for the deck as you can leave them to go about the business of flowering, without the need for watering.
Sound like the perfect plant for you? When planting, choose an area with soil
that is well drained, rather than hard and wet. Dig a hole and pop in your seedling. Plant your seedlings quite close together – about 200mm apart - as they don’t tend to spread too far outwards when they grow. It’s also the perfect distance for covering any gaps should any of the plants fail to prosper.
In around six to eight weeks you should be enjoying a flurry of hot, summer colour that will last the whole season. Best admired on the patio with a drink.
Some like it hot – the perfect summer plantCOLOUR: There are several varieties of gazania, they thrive in hot and dry situations.

Volunteers make a difference every day – from driving a van to simply knocking on doors to see how people are doing.
Volunteering is a great way to boost your own wellbeing at the same time as helping your community. Volunteering includes all of the ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’: it helps us to connect, be active, take notice, give and keep learning.
Red Cross’ Cross Town Shuttle is a volunteer-run service providing transport for people in Christchurch without transport of their own and unable to use public transport. Volunteer drivers and assistants take people to medical appointments and leisure activities, helping to combat social isolation and allow people to continue to lead full lives, regardless of the impact imposed by road works and post-earthquake infrastructure repairs.
With plans to expand the service, Red
Cross needs more volunteer drivers and more volunteers to help with community outreach and door-knocking. Red Cross volunteers are a diverse bunch of people who come from a wide range of backgrounds.
Before Anthony Seumanutafa was a volunteer on the Cross Town Shuttle, he used the service to help him get across the city. “I find it to be a good way to help and socialise with people, and a way to say thank you to all those for their help – three for the price of one.”
This desire to help is what unites volunteers, says Christine Williams, outreach volunteer.
“We are able to give time, empathy, a listening ear and often some contact numbers for further assistance to enable the person we visit to continue to move forward.”
If you have a little spare time you could give, why not get in touch with New Zealand Red Cross now to find out how you could help make a difference too?
The Red Cross recovery team couldn’t function without wonderful volunteers who give their time to help people in Christchurch.

Experts in diesel vehicle tune-ups
Diesel Doctor Ltd on Lincoln Road are the experts in diesel vehicle tune-ups, warranty repairs and servicing. Since
establishing the business in 1994, Tony Wessels has seen the transition of the diesel from smokey, heavy and noisy to the sophisticated high tech vehicles of today.
Specialising in all makes and models, Tony says that proper care of your diesel engine is not only important for your vehicle, but saves you money in the long run and is also better for the environment.
Technological advances have lowered emission levels and allowed diesel cars to become quicker, quieter and more economical.
Diesel vehicles operate under higher pressure than standard engines and therefore need regular maintenance to ensure they perform at their best. Diesel Doctor’s wide range of speci c diesel oils means they can give your vehicle the perfect service to manufacturer’s speci cations, particularly the high specs required for European models.
Diesel Doctor Ltd is able to carry out all your maintenance to the highest level. As sophisticated electronics now control more of the car’s functions, knowledge and expertise is essential to keep diesel engines in top condition.
“With over 60 years’ collective experience
Diesel vehicles have become increasingly trusted for their durability and toughness, whether they are commercial or recreational vehicles. However they need specialised care to work to their optimum performance and longevity.
between the three of us, our experience is our customer’s gain,” says Tony.
Diesel Doctor has the latest technology to diagnose problems quickly and carry out both mechanical and electronic service or repairs.
Customer enquiries are welcomed by Diesel Doctors located at 288 Lincoln Road, Addington, where there is ample o street parking, or phone 338 8884.
Diesel Doctor owner Tony Wessels.
Braxton Car Lights are part of the BE Group, one of the largest importers of car, commercial and truck parts in New Zealand. Specialising in car lights, Braxton covers the entire South Island and the combination of their huge on-site range, national and international networks and a computerised system to match any request to the correct replacements makes them the place to visit for all your vehicle lighting requirements.
Conveniently located in Sydenham, they have an extensive range of replacement light fittings for most makes and models of Japanese, European and New Zealand new vehicles, both new and second-hand. They are fully checked and in perfect working order and Braxton guarantee that all their fittings are warrantable.
They import and export both new and used car parts so that whatever make or model your vehicle is, they will be able to help. Containers arrive monthly from abroad, full of new and used lamps, and within the BE Group, over 100,000 lamps are available.
The team at Braxton Car lights also specializes in repairs for light adjuster and light conversion of American car lights, and
their repair service includes plastic welding, drying out and resealing, re-silvering and lens refurbishment. They work closely with garage workshops, and their services can be arranged through your own local garage on your behalf. Sales Manager Richard Vernimmen says that their team is dedicated to saving their customers money, whether on late- model cars with expensive parts or early models where replacements are hard to find.
Their aim at Braxton is to supply their customers the parts that you require and a pocket-friendly price. And with heaps of available stock, they will do everything to provide a solution to their car light-searching exercise.
Call in to see them at 325 Brougham Street, between Buchan and Gasson Streets, email them on [email protected] or phone them on 0800 225 483.
