YOUR LIONS AT WORK Nomination – Election Process

At our March 1st membership meeting the previously displayed slate of officers will be presented to our PELC membership. A team of great PELC Lions worked diligently to put this group of potential officers together for the next Lions year serving from July 1st, 2014 through June 30th, 2015. Your thanks and questions can be directed to Lions Tom Seibert (chairman), Don Johnson, Cyndie Bunker, Marvin Surles and John West. During the March 1st meeting the nomination committee will make available to the membership floor nominations for any of the officers positions. If there are additional nominations coming from the floor the committee will then add them to the ballet. The nomination process will close at the end of the meeting. Following the meeting the slate of officers with the floor nominations will be emailed to all of the membership through our club secretary, Lion Cyndie. Fourteen days later at our March 15th membership meeting the members present will vote first for the contested positions and then finally for the total slate of officers. That completes the process. This member-approved slate is to be submitted to our District and LCI by April 15th. Then it is up to all of us to gather around these dedicated Lions to support them in the upcoming challenges for next year. For more information on this topic go to LCI website and type in the search box “Elections” then choose a topic of interest.

 Getting to Know US

As part of our efforts to find out more about how we feel about our club, about how well we do our job and do we really like being a part of this organization you graciously participated in a LCI/PELC club survey. Our own Lion Ben Sheppard took on the responsibility to gather and decipher the information and presented his findings at our last meeting. This survey asked each of us to answer questions considering several issues:

• Volunteer activity importance • Satisfaction with your Lions Club • Meeting satisfaction • Evaluation of your Lions Club • Lions wishes/frustrations

The results from the survey was grouped into five categories:

• Service mindedness • Good communications • Strong membership • Member retention • Effective club leadership

The tabulated results used the LCI standard template. The results were very positive with an overall 97% positive feedback. There were no overall negative results. There was an even mix of 3% positive/negative results.

Two areas for improvement were defined: • Find ways to involve children and

family members (56% felt it important, 35% felt this did not describe our club.

• I would appreciate having a mentor to help explain things to me (32% felt it important, 36% felt they did not need a mentor.

At this presentation the membership was called to action and several suggestions were presented. Family involvement;

1. Participation in our District Youth Contest

2. Face Literary Initiative 3. Breakfast with the Lions 4. Lions World Lunch Day

“There is no thing such as fun for the whole family.” Jerry Seinfeld

WHAT’S HAPPENING  PELC New Member Orientation:

1. Develop “Who we are” Lions knowledge meetings

2. Monthly highlight presentation at meeting and/or newsletter

3. Develop mentoring program. If you are interested in forming a committee to work on any of these programs or if you have an idea that we should consider doing in regards to these results take the time and bring it to our attention. Maybe together we can find another way “TO SERVE”. As President I want to personally thank Lion Ben Sheppard and the membership committee for the work that went into this survey. I also want to extend to you my thanks for your participation.

What is a Lion?

Over the past few months we have been analyzing what it takes to be a Lion. We have discussed Ethics, LCI Ethical Standards, and Purposes and described the basic responsibilities of your club officers. In this newsletter you will find an explanation of the election process as the club goes through the selection of officers for the year 2014-15. As we add new members it is important to orientate them in the process of being a Lion. This is called “MENTORING”. There are several ways to accomplish this task. The first way is to have that responsibility fall on the sponsoring member. Another is to designate a club member or group of members that responsibility. We could also hold special meetings to cover this topic for all members to attend. We will and have started in this newsletter to bring this information to all of our members by highlighting various mentoring orientation issues each month. So why do we want to mentor our lions? Well the purpose of mentoring is as follows; We all know as Lions “WE SERVE”. By having a mentoring program we serve the community by helping our fellow Lions, on an individual one on one basis, to understand who we are and what we do to assure that your club continues to have quality members, prepared to take the lead in meeting the communities needs. We need to take away the confusion of only having a vague idea of

our organizations goals, programs, history and traditions. As new members they need to feel like they belong. As a club we want the new member to be motivated and committed in helping the organization to reach its goals. A new member belonging to an organization and having no idea of its goals, programs, traditions and history would feel like they didn’t belong or maybe like an outsider looking in. They likely would be wondering why they joined at all. The intention in these next few months is to help eliminate this type of confusion and bring to light what and who we are and shed some light on where we are going. For more information on this subject go to the LCI website and in the search box type in “orientation” and select from numerous topic on this subject.

Things to Do

LCI Netcasts and Webinars Netcasts and webinars are virtual training vehicles where participants use the Internet to connect with other group members and with the instructors. These courses are found on the LCI web site for your consideration. It helps to be informed and prepared when "WE SERVE".

YOUR LIONS AT WORK Lions World Lunch Day

This is Family and Friends Month and LCI President Lion Barry Palmer has declared April 4th, 2014 as a day to celebrate with family and friends. This is a 24-hour international event that brings families and friends of Lions together to share how your club is making a difference in the community. We will be joining other district Lions at 12 pm noon at Frankie’s Mexican Cuisine, 2701 Custer Pkwy, Richardson, TX. Come join the official District 2-X1 registered event for a fun day of food, and fellowship. Be a part of something really big. As the clubs around the world host lunches the relay will move from time zone to time zone as Lions pass the event around the world, forming the Lions World Lunch Relay. Share a meal; celebrate your clubs success, the value of service and the rewards of being a Lion. Contact PDG Carolyn Dorman for details and reservations. Email [email protected] or phone 972-897-9188.

Special Guest at Our Last Meeting

Lion Tom Seibert and Family

Standing is Lion Tom Seibert, seated (left to right) daughter in law Jenny, granddaughter Ella Mae, daughter Ashley, granddaughters Katrina and Megan, sons Walter and Gilbert. They all joined us for breakfast and we enjoyed their visit.

Lion Danny Fletcher and

Granddaughter Lion Danny Fletcher is here showing off his granddaughter Alyssa Striker at our last

meeting. Seems as though she had a few Girl Scout Cookies left to sell. We Lions have always had a sweet tooth and a special place for little girls so we didn’t go home empty handed.

Toys for Tots Award Lions Dora Harrington and Danny Fletcher received a Certificate of Appreciation for outstanding support from the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots campaign manager David Marks (center).

Lions Dora and Danny went way beyond the call of duty on several snowy, icy winter nights last December to help in the campaign. We Lions will use your example ‘TO SERVE”.
