“Christmas is doing a little something extra for
someone.”

Mrs. Stuckey has been a teacher for many years at
PHS. The time has come for Mrs. Stuckey to bid fare-
well to Pelham High School. She will be retiring after
teaching here for twenty-eight and half years. Her last
day teaching at PHS will be on Friday, November 30,
2012. She has been teaching a total of 29 years.
She taught for half a year at Whigham School in
Whigham, GA. Mrs. Stuckey says that she has many
fond memories from her years at PHS. When asked
what her plans are after retirement, Mrs. Stuckey
replied,” I will become a full time secretary for my
husband’s company.” We would like to wish Mrs.
Stuckey well in all of her endeavors that she takes on
after her retirement. She will be missed at PHS. -By

On November 16th, Mr. Mohammad’s first block
chemistry class hosted a going away party for Mrs.
Stuckey. On the day of the party the students brought
in many foods and drinks. Before they got Mrs. Stuck-
ey from her classroom, the class decided to make a
slide to display on the smart board wishing her good
luck and showing her their love. The class turned all
the lights off and sent for Mrs. Stuckey. When she
came down the hallway and entered the door, she was
astonished at what she saw. Everyone yelled,
“Surprise!” The look on her face
was priceless. She was so thankful
and told them she would miss
them. Everyone will definitely miss
her because she made an impact
on many students and teachers.
Mrs. Stuckey will be remembered
at Pelham High School for many
years to come. -By Ramsey Glass

Operation Christmas Child Not every child is lucky enough to be blessed with a new toy every
year because some families have been, and still are, in a terrible
state of poverty. To ensure that a few of those unfortunate children
gain a portion of joy, FCCLA members joined in on a worldwide
project known as Operation Christmas Child. Operation Christmas
Child is a project that is designed to deliver presents to children
around the Christmas holidays so they have something to look for-
ward to. FCCLA members, and a few other students, stayed after
school November 15, 2012 to begin the process. Students brought
shoe boxes covered with beautiful Christmas paper wrappings and
stuffed them with toys and toiletries for either a boy or girl. The
amount of total presents was twenty-four. The event was one that
all participants will remember because they got the opportunity to
spread happiness to someone else by playing the role of Santa.

is better to give than to receive. –By Sherry Lammons
In North America, we have a custom of buying Christmas trees and placing them
somewhere in our home. We consider it a tradition to decorate the trees with lights, ornaments, and bows. Then, as Christmas
draws nearer we begin to compile presents around the tree. Although this ritual is very common, not many people know where these traditions come from. In ancient
times, many cultures believed that ever-green would keep out witches, demons,
ghosts, and sickness. These cultures hung greenery around their homes,
especially above doors and around windows to ward off evil. As time went
on, Romans grew fond of the idea, and hung greenery in honor of those who lived through a sickness. In their case, evergreens symbolized tri-
umph over death. Early Romans marked the solstice with a feast called the Saturnalia in honor of Saturn, the god of agriculture. The Romans knew that the solstice meant that soon farms and orchards would be green and
fruitful. To mark the occasion, they decorated their homes and temples with evergreen boughs. Europeans brought Christmas to America, and over time it has developed into what we have today. Some of us think of Christmas as a time to celebrate the birth of Christ, while others may
believe it is a day to gather with family and give gifts. Most of us in the South believe in the combination of both and look forward to celebrating the birth of Christ while gathering with family and friends and exchanging
gifts. –By Courtney Hilliard
Countdown to Christmas
On November 3, 2012 in Pana-
ma City, Florida, Whitney Har-
rell earned the title “Teen
National Southern Miss.” She
received awards for best smile,
best attire, and best personality. Whitney had a personal interview with
the judges and gave an on stage introduction to the audience. She stat-
ed her name, hometown, an interesting fact about her hometown, and
her platform. Her platform, which is the cause she supports, is ovarian
cancer awareness. Whitney chose this because unlike breast cancer, it
is not easily detected. Another big reason is because of her grandmoth-
er, who basically diagnosed herself from an
article she read. When Whitney’s grandmother
found out she had ovarian cancer, she was in
stage four. Her grandmother is a big inspiration
to her. Whitney was so intimidated at the pag-
eant; there were so many beautiful girls. After
she was crowned, she participated in a photo-
shoot on the beach the following morning. At the photo-shoot, she
signed a contract stating her duties as a queen. At the end of her reign,
she will receive the scholarship money that she earned. –By Lexi Gil-

On Thursday, November 16, 2012, the end to a
beloved saga aired on the big screen. The Twilight
series final movie, Breaking Dawn Part 2, came
out and left fans shocked with the movie. The saga
has been a hit series since the very first movie,
where a century old vampire falls in love with a
normal girl. The two fall in love and get married.
They have a child, Renesmee; the child is adored
by the entire Cullen’s clan and Bella’s old friend,
Jacob. The movie begins with Bella who is experi-
encing immortality. She feels as though life can’t
get any better, until, Jacob cares a little too much
about Renesmee and imprints on Bella’s baby girl.
Bella, being a newborn vampire, loses her temper,
and aims to attack Jacob, but instead Seth jumps
in the way and gets hurt by Bella’s new strength.
The next trouble Bella and Edward face is a family
friend sees Renesmee playing in the snow and
jumps to the conclusion that she is an immortal
child, which is a crime in the vampire world. Irina
doesn’t wait for an explanation from the Cullens
and rushes off to tell the Volturi, royalty to the
vampire world, of their thought-to-be crime. The
Volturi plan to make a visit to the Cullen’s to
destroy the child and its creator. The Cullen’s fear
that the Volturi will choose to kill all of them; they
decide that they will try to make the Volturi listen.
They travel around the world to find witnesses
that will stand with them while they face the
Volturi. The witnesses that the Cullen’s find work
on special powers that some of the vampires
acquired. When they are met on the battlefield, the
Voltaire calls upon several members of the Cul-
len’s clan, and eventually the head of Volturi, Aro,
calls upon Renesmee. Renesmee shows him her
life and Aro is astounded. Aro, however, is still
looking for a fight. Eventually, Alice shows up and
shares her vision with Aro of what will happen if
the Volturi fight. Aro is frightened by her vision,
but still insists that there is a possible danger.
Suddenly, Alice brings out her witness for the
Volturi. The witness is also half immortal-half
mortal and has shown no danger to the vampire
existence. The Volturi leave and the ending of
Bella and Edward’s story is left for you to figure
out. –By Cheyenne Brooks

Even though the PHS Hornets are not in the playoffs, four of the teams they played against have gone on. Those teams are Brooks County, Fitz-
gerald, Early County, and Cook County. Only Cook County has been put out of the playoffs losing to Lamar County 51-13. The rest of the teams coming out of 1AA have been doing well getting through the first 2
rounds with ease. This week Brooks will play Calhoun; Fitzgerald will play Jefferson, and Early Co. will play GACS in the Quarter Finals of the
State Playoffs. Three of the remaining eight teams in the playoffs are from region1AA, which shows how good and tough this region really is. Re-
member these teams in prayer as they travel, and wish them the best of luck as they try to bring back another championship for our region. Let’s go Region 1AA! -By Christian Drake
