On behalf of our Club Members, it is with great pride

and pleasure that I welcome, as Honorary Swimming

Club Members, the Chief Minister of Penang, Yang

Amat Berhormat Tuan Chow Kon Yeow, and our State

Assemblyman for Tanjung Bungah (also Penang State

Executive Councillor), Yang Berhormat Tuan Zairil

Khir Johari.

Our Club has, throughout the years, supported and co-

operated with Penang State by providing the necessary

training for swimmers and sailors; many of whom have

progressed on to successfully represent Penang, and

in some cases, Malaysia. This is an area of support that

our Club will continue to provide, and are proud to do

so. In addition, Members will be aware that our Club, in

collaboration with Penang State, also hosts the annual

'Penang International Regatta'. Penang State can depend

upon our Club’s unwavering support to promote water

sports and other activities within the State, and our

assurance that we will continue to contribute towards the

development and growth of Penang in partnership with

the State Government.

This 'President’s Message' is also an opportune time to

inform Members that the Main Committee has confi rmed Lim Shin LidPresident

the appointment of Mr. Ramis Chandran as the General

Manager of Penang Swimming Club. Many of our Members

will have seen Ramis 'making his rounds' in our Club, and

I believe that his contribution towards the effi ciency and stability within the Club has been well received by Members.

The Main Committee hopes that with his wealth of

experience, knowledge and professionalism, Ramis will help

raise Penang Swimming Club to greater heights.

After the huge success of Oktoberfest last year, we have

been overwhelmed with requests to continue with the

celebration again this year. So, we are working towards

organising an even better event this time around, and aiming

for an encouraging and increased attendance.

Lastly, I would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone,

a Happy Mid-Autumn Festival.

We will continue to contribute towards the development and growth of Penang in partnership with the State Government.

Lim Khoon Seng Editor

These are great values and tradition we must strive to preserve and foster.

“ “

The PSC membership is at the threshold of breaching eight

thousand, thanks to a very steady growth over the years, we

are now the largest Members’ Club in Penang and among

the top in Malaysia, that is, in size. Yet we are still growing!

On one hand we have reasons to be happy, as this is an

indication that the Club is doing well, but on the other

hand we should examine the effect of an ever increasing

population. Over the years, the increased in membership

has brought with it more varieties in sports, social and

recreational activities, which might be considered a positive

development. However, this must be tempered with

staying focused on Club objectives and doing them well.

An unchecked growth in number beyond an optimal level

will almost certainly put severe strains on the provision of

facilities and amenities; compromising their quality and the

very fabrics of the Club. Indeed, we have witnessed that

during some well attended events, we actually ran short of

parking spaces.

PSC has a history of offering excellent services and amenities,

very lively and energetic participation by members in the

sporting and Club activities. These are great values and

tradition we must strive to preserve and foster. Perhaps it is

good time to ponder on a 'suitable' size of membership for our

Club, vis a vis the physical limitation, the values and visions for

the Club.

Dear Valued Members,

Warmest greetings to you!

Welcome to another edition of the Nautilus, the magazine

for Penang Swimming Club Members.

I am looking forward to receiving your feedback on your

experience with us. Whilst we love our Club, we certainly

recognise that we are not perfect and it is only through your

feedback that we can continue to improve our service.

It is good to see the membership becoming comfortable

with the controlled access and with our ability to ensure the

integrity of an international private Club for members and

their invited guests. With controlled access, we are now

also able to much better ensure that all entries are properly

supervised while on the Club premise. We apologize that we

were not more effective in monitoring this important rule in

the past, but it is good to hear the feedback from members

that they generally see a difference in the behaviour of the

members and that the Club is a safer environment for all.

With regards to other Club Rules, we would like to also

remind Members to adhere to the dress code for our

Captain's Restaurant. And all vehicles using the Club’s

parking lot for overnight purposes must be registered with

security and be limited to club activities as stipulated by our

club laws.

Two splendid club events are scheduled for September and

October. First, we will once again celebrate the Mooncake

Festival, an enjoyable opportunity for adults and children to

celebrate together. This will be followed shortly thereafter

by what is becoming an eagerly anticipated annual Club

event - 'The Oktoberfest'.

We look forward to busy months and many improvements

in the Club as further strides are made towards our vision of

being the 'Best Club in Penang'.

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward

to seeing you at the Club!

Coming together is a beginning. Keeping together is process Working together is success.

- Henry Ford

All members, please be alerted to the outbreak of HFMD,

both in Penang and nationally. To date, the country has

recorded more than fi fty thousand cases - with children especially vulnerable to this disease, although adults are

susceptible to it as well.

The HFMD disease is a viral infection, and is transmitted

through direct contact with an infected individual, or

via exchange of bodily fl uids, i.e.: saliva, etc.. Common symptoms are high fever, ulcers in the tongue or mouth

and blisters in the hand or foot. It is important to maintain

a high level of personal hygiene and to be cautious when in

contact with strangers at public areas.

Good personal and environmental hygiene is important, as

prevention is better than cure. To date, there is no known

cure for the disease. It is best to consult a doctor if any

suspicious symptoms appear, and good hydration may help

provide relief as well.

Sections & Groups should be aware that in terms of

photography for Nautilus articles, Ann Tan now only has

responsibility for Club Events, such as Patron’s Night,

All Sections and Groups are responsible for their own

respective photos, whether the S & G Events are classed

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicked off in Russia on 14th June

2018. It has been indeed a sporting month at our Club since

the football season started - as most of our football followers

and fans eagerly catch the matches live on-screen!

When the World Cup Final took place on 15th July 2018,

we were crowded with more than 200 members at the Club

House and Fun Pub. Our Club members were entertained

with the lively 3-piece Live Band – 'Peak of the Jammed'

from 6.30 p.m. onwards at the Club House.

The programme was then followed with some fun games led

by our Club Executives - 'Kicking the Ball' and a 'Beer and

Wine Drinking' contest. In the middle of the programme,

some Dance Sport members were seen dancing and enjoying

themselves while the band played. Others also had a great

time enjoying the delicacies served that night; namely the

traditional Malaysian Chicken Satay and delectable dishes

such as the Chicken Pie as well as the Grilled Mixed Combo.

The FIFA World Cup Final ended at 12.50 a.m., and members

and guests went home happily after having known the

results of the match for France vs Croatia: 4-2.

Our fi rst fi shing competition of the year was the Day Fishing Competition held on 17th June 2018 at the Snake Temple

The expedition gets positive feedback from divers of all

categories - Ocean to Sports, and senior divers who mingled

around to share their memories and experiences throughout

their stay together. This is a great way of bonding between

two BSAC branches. On our last day back, we were grateful

to BSAC Kuantan for hosting us and two birthday boys in our

Group to a sumptuous lunch at a restaurant in Kuantan and at

the same time meeting with their Committee Members there.

The Chairman, Mr Fred has made the occasion more

meaningful by proposing the twinning of two branches; BSAC

Kuantan 0903 and BSAC Penang 225 as sisters. This will

become BSAC’s fi rst twinning sisters in the history between the East and the West Coast of Malaysia. This will enable the

two branches to work closely; helping one another in training

and promoting BSAC standards in scuba diving.

team of 19 swimmers.

We are proud to announce that we again won 4th position

with a total of 1176.50 points.

Our swimmers did the Club proud with medals won, points

We are proud to announce the PSC Swimmers

who will be representing Penang in the SUKMA

Games 2018, to be held in Ipoh, Perak. This biannual

national sporting event comprises of various

sporting events and swimming is one of them.

The Penang State Team for Swimming has a total

of 19 swimmers and we have 6 swimmers from our

team. They are Elynn Tan, Toh Ting Wei, Robin Law,

Cieran Wong, Chris Chew and Jesselyn Lim. Our

Head Coach Tan Choo Heng will be the Penang State

Coach for this competition. The Swimming Section

is very honoured and proud that our swimmers and

coach have been given this wonderful opportunity.

The SUKMA Games 2018 will be held from the

12th to 22nd of September 2018.

On the 14th of July 2018, the Swimming Section organised

a workshop for our Section Members and PSC Swim Team.

This was the Introduction to Sports Psychology by Dr.

Thariq Khan. Dr. Thariq is a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of

Sports Science and Coaching at the University Pendidikan

Sultan Idris (UPSI) in Tanjung Malim. He competed as a state

sprinter for Penang in his youth and understands the mind,

training and challenges of an athlete.

During this workshop, he taught the participants to focus

on things that they can control (and not worry about the

things which they can't) so that they can better control

their anxiety; as well as why they needed to learn to relax;

visualisation; relaxation techniques; breathing techniques;

focus. As this was only an introductory workshop, Dr. Thariq

spent the most time on practical exercises and having the

participants experience his ideas.

sportsmanship demonstrated throughout the meet by our

team and the tidiness left behind each day (we are not as

fastidiously clean as the Japanese footballers and supporters

at the World Cup, but we did our best).

A special mention goes to our medalists:

Our swimmers were lucky to compete in a brand new pool,

which was opened just for the weekend and afterwards,

enjoyed lots of delicious Ipoh food. In fact, the parents had

a very good weekend eating their way around the Ipoh town

as well. Meelan found a Pasar Tani near the aquatic complex

and her husband found a fi sh head bee hoon stall in a hawker centre, within walking distance. We ate so much that a diet

was needed after we came back from Ipoh. We are now

looking forward to the President Cup, which will be in Ipoh in

November, and to another eating fest.

There were many new personal best times achieved and

medals won from our swimmers. Our medallists were:

and milestones that the trio achieved. A common theme

running through the photos and videos was the friendship

and camaderie that was present among the swimmers.

Elynn and Dickson shared that actually that was what they

enjoyed most in their swimming career – training hard with

the friends and competing with them; having fun with like-

minded people who were working towards a common goal.

They advised the younger swimmers to treasure and cherish

this time together because once one grows up, everyone

goes their separate ways and swimming training is a distant

memory.

Dickson shared that he loved training now because he used it

to de-stress and take his mind away from his job.

Lots of questions were asked and their answers were

enlightening. Hopefully, the younger swimmers will be

inspired and understand that how well they perform during

training is how well they will do during competitions.

In the half hour interview/celebration/presentation, it

was good for the younger swimmers to understand the

challenges that these Elite Swimmers have undergone

growing up over the years; and especially when they were

teenagers. Now that they are on the cusp of adulthood,

in the middle of university or embarking on the journey of

maturity; they appreciate the time, effort and discipline that

Competitive Swimming Training has given them.

This event was held after 'Inside the Mind of the Elite

Swimmer', on the 28th of July 2018 at 7pm to 9.30pm.

For those of us who grew up in the Club in the 1980s, we

remember with nostalgia watching movies there. It was

intended that the Mini Theatre be utilised to bring more

people to the Club on a Saturday night and make use of

an existing facility.

Swimming Section mooted the idea and undertook the

responsibility of organising it and opening it to all Club

Members. The movie to be screened is voted upon in

our new Swimming Section website – a choice of movies

(from the Club Library) are fi rst put up and votes are taken. The movie with the most votes will be screened.

'How To Train Your Dragon' got the most votes and 16

families enjoyed the movie. We hope to run this event

again and encourage more Club members to take

advantage of this facility.

https://swimming.penangswimmingclub.com

Our new website was launched in June 2018 as we have

outgrown the blog of 5 years. All Section members are

encouraged to register as we are trying to reduce the

amount of paper mailing and postage for documents

related to the Annual General Meeting. Registration for

events organised by the Section will also be done through

our website – again to save paper and be more effi cient. Standard Operating Procedures and By-Laws are also

published here, but viewing is limited to site members

only.

Please write to us at [email protected] if you

have any enquiries or feedback, especially if you are new

to the Swimming Section.

Meelan came on board the Swimming Section Committee

in April 2018 and has been very enthusiastic about

encouraging the swimmers. She had been reading Endure:

Mind, Body, and the Curiously Elastic Limits of Human

Performance by Alex Hutchinson and wanted to see if our

Elite Swimmers have the same mental ability.

With Elynn Tan doing extremely well in the last two years

and this being her fi nal season with the PSC Swim Team, it was fi tting that Meelan organised this event as a form of farewell, brain picking and acknowledgment of all that Elynn

has accomplished.

Meelan also convinced Dickson Chin, another of our ex-Elite

swimmers and current Masters swimmer to come and inspire

the swimmers. Dickson who trained with PSC as a Sporting

Member until he went to university is now a young, working

adult. He came back to training with the team this year so

that he can compete for Penang Swimming Club.

Unfortunately, Lim Yunn Fu – another ex-Elite swimmer who

is currently in Melbourne studying could not make it to this

event. However, he sent a voice recording which was shared

with all those who were present.

Meelan started the evening, on the 28th of July 2018 at

6.30pm with a video montage of all the swimming events

In continuing with our monthly Pilates workshops, the

Aerobics Group held a workshop using the Fitness Ring a.k.a

Magic Circle. The turnout for these type of workshops are

always super-excellent as members enthusiastically take up

the challenge. The Pilates Magic Circle is a fl exible ring that is a great tool for toning the upper and lower body, mainly

targeting the core muscles. Attending Pilates classes on a

regular basis has a whole range of benefi ts for both your body and your mind. Do come and join us every Tuesday and

Thursday evening at Level One!

At PSC Aerobics, the party never ends. We held two Retro

Fitness parties, one Saturday after another - both of which

were well attended. They were led by instructor Frances

Cabanal, all the way from the Philippines. A long time ago,

there was a TV programme by Richard Simmons, an American

Fitness Instructor called 'Sweating to the Oldies' (oldies

meaning classic, all-time favourite songs). Personally, I believe

that Frances’s presentation is akin to this line of Aerobics.

It was awesome to see the members having so much fun;

dancing and sweating to the oldies. Frances has promised to

come back to Penang next year; so members, do keep your

eyes peeled for more Aerobics Group events! It’s a great way

to stay fi t and build your morale and self-confi dence.

A Salsation Masterclass was held on the 7th of July at

Level 14. YoYo Reyes Sanchez who hails from Cuba is a

Salsation Elite Trainer and to be able to attend his class

was an experience of a lifetime. 130 people turned up and

the atmosphere was both euphoric and rhapsodic. We

rocked the whole fl oor and danced the afternoon away. Salsation is a revolutionary dance workout that is easy to

follow as it focuses on the music and lyrical expression. It

is a ‘next generation Latin based dance workout’ - that is

fun and addictive. We hope to include this new workout in

our schedule in the not too distant future.

A JOINT DANCESPORT GROUP - PSC EXTRAVAGANZA

Immediately after the speeches by DSG Convenor, Mr.

Terence Choong and the Club President, Mr. Lim Shin Lid; an

up-tempo medley of dance music prepared by Ms. Emmeline

Yong came through and energised the mood of the crowd.

Belly Dancing, Rock n Roll, Cha Cha, Swing Waltz and Disco

music came on in quick succession; the tunes ably and

enthusiastically danced to by our very own members. The

feeling of exuberance, gaiety and joie de vivre it engendered

became refl ective of the ambience of the evening.

The opening Belly Dance managed to raise the temperature

of the night; the Swing Waltz 'You Will Never Grow Old'

was nostalgic; and the Disco music 'Dancing On A Saturday

Night' brought the crowd back to a real party atmosphere.

From then on, the Band played live songs interspersed by

hot DVD music, and the crowd danced on, the wine fl owed…the food was almost forgotten! It was also the very fi rst time we experienced the recipients dancing their ways to receive

table lucky draws. All in all it was an unforgettable night

which had to stop at 12.00 midnight only because the band

stopped playing. There was music in the heart as the crowd

reluctantly dispersed – to be continued at the next DSG-PSC

Theme Night.

After 3 months, during which competitive darts has only

consisted of the Tuesday League, our darters attended the

Group 2nd Quarterly Competition on Sunday, 19th August.

The Darts Committee, always trying to come up with new

competition formats, to surprise (and often confuse) the

competitors, had decided on the following:-

The darters were split into separate Ladies and Men’s

Categories to compete, and the ladies, in teams of four,

competed in a normal competition format (1 x 4Some,

3 x Singles & 2 x Doubles), while the men, in teams of 3,

partook in a 'Round Robin' event (1 x 3Some, 1 x Doubles

and 1 x Singles).

The matches, with a 'half-time' interval for high tea, were

often jovial, but always competitive!

At the conclusion the results were as follows:

Well done to those darters who turned up to compete,

and also to members of the Darts Committee for

organising the event and the catering.

In June the theme of the get-together was 'Love Is In The

Gatherings at the Pacifi c Lounge are always happy occasions; especially as we hold birthday celebrations! On 30th June

As soon as the pairing was sorted out by both sides, the

matches then started off smoothly one after another.

Although our visitors were without any ladies; that didn’t

stop our ladies to fi x up a couple of games by themselves!

With the games being played and the event coming to
