Greetings from the Director! There are a lot of changes going on at Pendle-ton Parks & Recreation. We’ve been working on these for awhile, but didn’t think we’d be asking you to absorb them all at one time! Please hang with us through any bumps in the road - hope-fully, they’ll be small ones.

You’ve probably already noted the new size and format of our Activity Guide. We know our customers loved the convenience of the previ-ous size, and it didn’t take up much space in those places we distribute them around town. However, the size led to printing difficulties that negatively affected quality, and trimming to that size wasted a surprising amount of pa-per. On the positive side, we do think this size is easier to read.

When you begin to register for fall and winter activities, you will definitely notice another change. We’ve switched software vendors and we think it will be easier for our customers to use. There are some processing fee changes, but the BIG payoff is a reservation module that will allow online reservations for facilties such as park shelters and pool shelters. Our goal is in-creased convenience for our customers, as well as increased internal efficiency. Look for us to phase this module in between this fall and next summer.

Finally, our website will soon be freshened up and sport a cleaner homepage, along with a bit of information reorganization. We’ve adopted some of that new look for our activity guide as well. As always, we appreciate any feedback you have.

The activity guide has all kinds of new programs and my particular favorite is bubble bump soc-cer, so check it out!

Have a great fall and remember to get out and enjoy those cooler days that are on the way.

For the details about why we’re changing soft-ware, please read our Director’s message.

The registration site is useful for finding infor-mation on our activities, as well as actual reg-istration. Soon you’ll be able to make park or pool shelter reservations 24 hours per day, and birthday party reservation dates can be tenta-

tively booked as well.

Getting there is the same as always. From our homepage, click “REGISTER NOW” and begin by creating your account. We’re starting fresh so that we have your most current infor-mation! The site looks a little different, but it works much the same way. See registration guidelines to the right for updated processing

fee information.

If you’re having trouble, give us a call and, as always, we’re available if you’d like to come

into the Parks Office at 865 Tutuilla Road.

REGISTRaTION

maIL/E-maIL NEWSWe are now direct mailing the brochure to our mailing list. We also will continue to distribute periodic flyers through the schools that help fill the gap between brochures, typically around holi-day breaks. If you have registered for one of our activities in the past year, you will automatically be on our mailing list. If you aren’t on the list, you can request to be added on our website.

Online registration asks for your email address as part of your account set-up, which it also uses to confirm registrations and facility reservations. We occassionally use your email address for special announcements and if you would like to OPT-OUT of these special announcements, you can change your preferences in your online profile with our new system.

CREDITS & REFUNDSCredits (good for up to one year from the date of issue) or refunds are readily granted if we are no-tified 7 days prior to the start date of the program. Credits only will be granted if notified less than 7 days prior to program start date. Program fees are not refunded for participants who miss por-tions of programs.

WaITLIST INFORmaTIONWhen using online registration, you may see a zero or negative number in the "open" column of the class. If you choose to continue your registra-tion, the system will place you on a waitlist. No payment is taken for placement on a waitlist. You will be called or emailed if an opening becomes available or if additional classes are created. If you fail to reply within 24 hours, the next avail-able person on the waitlist will be notified. Note that if additional classes are created, they may not be at the same time or day as the original pro-gram. Students on a waitlist are not guaranteed a space in the program.

A messAge from the coAches: All lev-els of gymnastics improve a child’s body, mind and coordination. We, as gymnastics coaches, seek to teach gymnasts to control fear and frus-tration while working hard to learn new skills and children gain a great sense of accomplish-ment when they do so. Flexibility and coordina-tion gained from gymnastics makes for better all-around athletes in other sports.

DODGEBaLL CLUB FOR kIDSAges: 9-11 Fee: $14

Want to have some fun after school? Join the dodgeball club taking place at your elementary school during the months of January and Febru-ary. You will be busy dodging these specially de-signed rubber coated foam balls and learning a lot of variations on the game.

The club meets right after school gets out for the day once per week at Washington, West Hills, Sherwood and McKay Elementary School. Have mom and dad get you signed up today. Talk to your friends and have them come play too!

The $14 fee is a great deal (only $1.50 per each day of dodgeball). Make sure that your ride home arrives no later than 4:00 p.m. (youth basketball practices begin promptly at this time so we need to clear the gym).

Since we know the word will spread after this new program begins we will allow continued en-rollment as long as space is available.

Please register at the Parks office, 865 Tutuilla Rd., by phone, 276-8100 or on-line. The instructor can-not take registration on-site.Location: Washington, West Hills, Sherwood &

Coach Garnett focuses on building confidence with ball handling, approaching the basket and pushing your limits. The increasing in-tensity of the drills challenge the kids to take their game to an entirely new level. Our summer ses-sion included kids hoping to try out for a school team for the first time, to travel team players with more experience. The focus is on the individual and not on competition. halloWeenIt takes a variety of volunteers, sponsors and your donations to keep this program the tremendous event that it has been over the years. If you are interested in sponsoring a booth or volunteering, please contact 276-8100. This would make a great service project for a club or organization.

BITS & pIECES

iCe rinK at roY raleYYou may not be aware that there is a group work-ing to make improvements at the ice rink. Follow-ing is a message from the committee president:

“Our committee is beginning the process of re-searching fundraising opportunities to update and expand the ice rink and possibly improve park facilities at Roy Raley Park. The immediate goal would be to have the new ice rink up and running for the 2015-16 season.

We plan to continue to offer the youth hockey and learn to skate programs for the community. This fall, students can expect to find fliers for those programs at their schools.”

KiWanis parKCheck out the latest addition to Kiwanis Park - a new picinc shelter courtesy of the Pendleton Ki-wanis Club! Parks employees assisted with instal-lation and landscaping and it is a great addition to the park. Congratulations to all for a successful project!

gaga Ball We built a gaga ball pit this summer and you’ll start to see it appearing at different locations around town. If you don’t know what gaga ball is, check it out on YouTube, grab a ball, and some friends - that’s all you’ll need for hours of fun. This is great for all ages!
