THE PROPERTYPenhallow Manor is a magnificent Grade II Listed former vicarage built, we believe, in 1843 and owned by our clients for the last 6 years.

Penhallow Manor is we understand, principally constructed in stone with painted rendered elevations under an attractive slated roof with deep overhanging eaves. Occupying an elevated position, Penhallow Manor is set at the end of a sweeping driveway with a gravelled parking area providing parking for several vehicles, off of which access is given to the detached Coach House and the rear courtyard.

The front door opens to a vestibule with an inner door opening to an impressive reception hall with a fine turning staircase to the first floor. The ground floor comprises well proportioned, versatile accommodation with large sash windows and 10’ high ceilings, marble and slate fireplaces, decorative cornices and views over the grounds towards either the church or the neighbouring countryside. The kitchen which has a wall of exposed stone above an Everhot range cooker with an array of handmade bespoke painted oak units including a large cabinet on the opposite wall with integrated fridge and freezer.

An inner hall is accessed off the main reception hallway or via the boot room and has a beautiful study with wood panelling and a concealed door to an archive room, a large pantry, a laundry room and a separate wc. This area of the house would at one time have been the servant’s quarters with its own staircase to the first floor.

On the first floor, a galleried landing with a large lantern window gives access to the principal three en-suite bedrooms, the master being an impressive 16’8” x 16’ with a large en-suite bathroom and a walk-in wardrobe with bespoke oak units and shelving. An archway from the galleried landing opens to the inner hallway off of which there are two spacious en-suite bedrooms and a second staircase leading to the ground floor which suggests that this area would have also been servants’ quarters at one stage.

Outside, gardens and grounds of approximately ¾ of an acre wraparound the property with level lawns on the east and south sides and a large courtyard to the west. From the courtyard there is a single garage, a triple bay linhay and front doors to both the Former Annexe and the three bedroomed Coach House.

In all, Penhallow Manor is of appeal to those in search of a gracefully proportioned period house with impressive yet manageable gardens and grounds in an accessible, picturesque, edge of village location close to the Devon/Cornwall border.

HISTORICAL NOTEThere has been a religious settlement on the site since early Medieval times and probably earlier as evidenced by the 6c granite cross, now situated in the gardens of Penhallow Manor and the 17th Century arch in the walls to the north west. It is understood that the former vicarage burned down in 1841 and was rebuilt in the Georgian style. The original architect’s plans still hang in the property today and Penhallow Manor remained as the vicarage until the church sold it in 1973. Daphne du Maurier’s second novel, Jamaica Inn, an historical tale of smugglers featuring the infamous albino vicar of Altarnun, Francis Davey, is set in this part of Cornwall. The 8th and 9th chapters of the book are set in the vicarage drawing room, now Penhallow Manor and here the main character, Mary Yelland discovers the grim truth behind her uncle’s smuggling.

LOCATION Altarnun has long been regarded as one of the most picturesque villages on Bodmin Moor with its fine church immediately next door to Penhallow Manor, the ‘Cathedral of the Moors, supporting the largest Parish in Cornwall. The essence of Altarnun remains and it has been the winner of the Tidy Village Trophy in the Britain in Bloom competition on more than one occasion, as well as being judged as the best kept village in Cornwall.

There is a local primary school, a shop, an art gallery and a tea room and the historic former market town of Launceston is approximately 8 miles distant to the east and provides a wide variety of shopping facilities, together with both state and private schooling. The A30 dual carriageway is extremely convenient and gives access to the cathedral city of Exeter and the motorway network.
