Directors Corner Melissa Nehrbass 2013District Dinner a Success
The annual meeting
event was held on
March 21, 2013 at
Woodside High School
in Newport News, VA.
Anne Carson, Virginia
PTA President, was in
attendance to bring
greetings from the
Virginia PTA Board of Managers. Greetings
from the Newport News School Board were
given by Dee Johnston, a past PTA Council
leader. The delegates elected your 2014
district nominating committee.
Volunteer of the Year winners for both
Elementary and Secondary were announced
and we celebrated our student Citizenship
Essay Award winners. See their names on
page 2.
Many thanks to the Newport News Council
of PTAs and Woodside High for hosting us at
this wonderful event. Remember, attendance
at this annual event is a legitimate PTA
expense. Make sure to budget for this event
in your 2013-2014 PTA budgets.
May, 2013 Volume 2, Issue 1
If you’re not
lighting any
candles, don’t
complain about
the dark.
It is hard for me to believe that it
has been a year since I wrote my
first Directors Corner note to you as
your new District Director, yet here
we are closing in on the end of
another school year. I want to take
this opportunity to thank all of the
local leaders, all the councils and
the district board for a great year.
I would like to take this opportunity
to introduce you to your new
Assistant District Director, Glenda
Evans. Unfortunately, Maria
Browning had to resign from this
position and according to our bylaws
your district board elected Glenda to
fill that unexpired term.
Glenda is the spouse of a former
Navy sailor and mother of two
wonderful children, ages 13 and
15. She works as a Financial
Systems Analyst at a local University.
Glenda has been involved in PTA
since 1998 and has served as a PTA
President,1st Vice President, 2nd
Vice President, and Treasurer.
I stated in my first letter to you that
one of my goals as your District
Director was to build our leadership
capacity. All the council presidents
have been doing a great job of
fostering their leaders and
rebuilding where necessary. A
special shout out to Pam Croom
from Hampton and Debi Abadie
from Newport News that have
worked to get units with no
leadership back on track.
Leadership training is a big part of
keeping your unit strong and
energized. I encourage all of you to
attend and bring as many of your
board members as possible to our
FREE district training on June 6 in
Hampton at Phenix K-8 School. There
is more information on this training
contained in this newsletter. Hampton
Council is offering boxed dinners for a
small fee if desired. During our
opening session we will call a short
meeting in order to vote on our district
bylaws five year revision. The revision
information can be found online (see
page 2 for web address).
All local unit presidents should have
received a mailing from Virginia PTA.
Please make sure you go through this
packet, make note of the information
it contains and pass on this info to
your new leadership.
Don’t forget to mark your calendars
and talk to your returning board
members or new members about
attending the Virginia PTA Annual
Conference in Richmond, July 11-13.
This year’s event will offer a wealth of
information and training in workshops,
election of new state officers, voting
on amendments to our state bylaws,
and adoption of resolutions. There
will be vendors and fund raising ideas
for your PTA. Cost for attendance to
this event is a legitimate expenditure
of PTA funds. See vapta.org for more
details.
