Intercollegiate athletics are BIG here, and now you can follow them all at abingtonsports.com.

Penn State Abington offers a world-class education, personal attention and an atmosphere in which you are encouraged to exercise your talents and put your skills to the test within the classroom and beyond its walls. Here, students are challenged to expand their horizons beyond their academic programs through involvement in numerous co-curricular activites.

In addition to a variety of intramural sports, there are 13 NCAA Division III sports teams from which to choose. On the local level, many of our teams compete and have won numerous championships in the North Eastern Ath-letic Conference and many of our athletes and coaches have been honored with all-conference and coach-of-the-year accolades.

Because of its recent success in multiple sports, Penn State Abington officially became an active Division III member in 2012-13. As an active member of Division III, Penn State Abington athletics will now be eligible for NCAA post-season championships and awards.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD!

Penn State Abington prepares student-athletes to engage with the campus’ academic and social environment through developing life long skills in leadership, sportsmanlike conduct, and athletic excellence. Our program’s focus is on the development of the whole person, and we place student-athlete welfare as our highest priority. We promote and reinforce traditional values of honesty, integrity, commitment and hard work as the foundation of our athletics program.

We take great pride in hiring coaches who are teachers first and embrace these values.

A great athletic tradition, a beautiful campus, and a challenging Penn State education. What’s not to like?

HEAD COACH CHRIS POTASH

Chris Potash enters his fifth season as the head coach of the Penn State Abington’s men’s basketball team and is a lecturer of Kinesiology.

The 2013-14 campaign proved to be the best yet under the tutelage of Potash as the Nittany Lions posted their first winning season in six years. The pattern of constant improvement under Coach Potash continued, as he has steadily increased the winning percentage of the program in each season at the helm. In the 2013-14 season, the Nittany Lions played to a 14-13 record, their first time over the .500 mark since 2008.

The team played one of the most competitive non-conference schedules in its history, taking on such opponents as Randolph Macon, Arcadia, Immaculata, and Marymount (Va.). In conference play, the Nittany Lions dominated throughout much of the season, finishing fourth in the highly contentious North Eastern Athletic Conference standings, earning their first NEAC Final Four appearances and their first ECAC postseason tournament bid. The season also included a strong 80-73 victory over Morrisville State, a team that advanced all the way to the Elite Eight in this year's NCAA DIII Basketball Championships.

The 2012-13 season was a successful one for Abington as the Blue and White earned its way into the NEAC championship tournament with a second place finish in the South Division. The Nittany Lions won eight of their last nine regular season conference games, including an eight game winning streak and was ranked 28th in the nation in scoring offense.

In 2011-12, the Nittany Lions tripled their win totals from the prior season due in large to Potash’s first recruiting class which featured the NEAC Rookie of the Year, rebounding leader and the conference’s top 3-point percentage shooter.

Prior to Abington, Potash was an assistant coach at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia, as USP was honored with back-to-back conference team sportsmanship awards, and at Drew University. Prior to the start of his collegiate coaching career, Potash was a head coach at Robbinsville High School and The Peddie School.

At Peddie, Potash was awarded prep coach of the year honors in 2005 and 2003. His team advanced to both the Mid-Atlantic Prep League and the New Jersey prep finals in 2005 and won the 2002 Neptune Holiday Jubilee. Coach Potash helped many players move on to play in college including the 2007 Big Five and two-time Ivy League Player of the Year, Ibby Jaaber.

Potash was a head coach at the International Basketball League (IBL) tryout camp, in the Rutgers University College Summer League and in the Jersey Shore Warriors AAU program. He was an assistant coach at Princeton Day School for the 1999 NJ prep state champs and an assistant coach in professional basketball for the York Cyclones of the EBA in 1997-98.

Aside from Abington, Potash is the chief of staff for Reebok’s All-American camp and is a director for Elevate Hoops events.

Potash holds a master’s degree from The College of New Jersey and a bachelor’s degree from York College of Pennsylvania.

STUDENT-ATHLETE ADVISORY COMMITTEE

A b i n g to n N i t t a ny L i o ns

The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is a committee made up of student-athletes assembled to provide insight on the student-athlete experience. The SAAC also offers input on the rules, regulations and policies that affect student-athletes' lives on NCAA member institution campuses.

Functions of Penn State Abington SAAC:

- Promote communication between athletics administration and student-athletes.- Disseminate information.- Provide feedback and insight into athletics department issues.- Generate a student-athlete voice within the campus athletics department regarding the formulation of policies.- Build a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletics teams.- Solicit student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA legislation.- Organize community service efforts.- Create a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees (e.g., student government).- Promote a positive student-athlete image on campus.

Athletic Center

Penn State Abington Athletics features indoor and outdoor facilities for 13 NCAA Division III intercollegiate sports. The centerpiece of Abington's athletics facilities is the Abington Athletic Building, which houses indoor venues for competition, practice and community recreation along with offices, locker rooms and training rooms. Men's and women's basketball teams and the women's volleyball team play in the Athletic Building. Clubs and local community events also utilize the building for special events from time to time.

Alverthorpe Park, home to the baseball and softball teams, has helped both programs grow and blossom. Since the park is maintained by Penn State Abington and utilized by several youth baseball and softball leagues, the athletic contests there have become popular sporting events attended by many members of the local community.

Penn State Abington and the Abington School District are working together to enhance Memorial Field, located in close proximity to the campus. The $5 millon project will upgrade the fields, install an all-weather non-competitve track, provide enhanced seating and facilities, and provide a venue for community sporting events that will being Penn State Abington, the township, and the local community closer together.
