President’s Message

After our Induction Ceremony this month our membership will have risen to near maximum. It may therefore be timely for members to be reminded to wear name badges at each meeting and outing as we have so many new members in our club it makes recognition so much more friendly.

If by chance you have mislaid your name badge Marjorie Seaton will be only too happy to order a new one for you.

As mentioned last meeting, the management team will make a decision as to which CPR course we think suitable for our needs. After this they will place an expression of interest sheet on the front table for those who are interested in doing the course to record their names.

I believe the “Walkers Spring Getaway” at the Entrance in September was a big success. Thanks go to Colleen and Eric Woodhead for making this outing so enjoyable.

October is also a popular month for “Getaways” as well. The Bowlers are looking forward to their “Away Trip” to Foresters Beach and the Caravan and Cabin Group are off to Oberon and we wish them all a happy time.

I hope by now you have sent your legal questions to Margaret Goddard ( email: [email protected]) so that she can collate them to present to our guest speaker this month (Nicholas Cowdery QC).

This month will be the last “luck door prize” for this year. We will commence again in January.

Membership Matters

New Attendance Procedure

This month we will be trialling a new way for you to show that you have attended the meeting. We are asking that you sign-in for yourself. Name sheets will be placed on the table in the foyer. Please place a tick against your name to show that you’ve attended the meeting. If someone has given you an apology for the current meeting then please place an “A” against that person’s name. There will also be a book for visitors to record their attendance and a sheet for noting apologies or leave requests for future meetings. But, you can always call me or drop me an email with your apologies or leave requests. One of us will be there to welcome you and hand out lucky door prize tickets to members. So, just to re-cap:

• Place a tick against your name to show that you’ve attended the meeting.

• Place an “A” against someone else’s name if they have given you an apology for the meeting.

• Note future apologies/leave requests on the separate sheet provided or call/email me.

• Visitors should sign the visitor’s book.

Responsibilities of Members

Meeting Absence. Thank you to all those who have sent apologies to me for this month’s meeting. Please contact me if you are aware that you will be/have been absent for unavoidable reasons [i.e. medical, travel, care-giver etc.] for 2 or more meetings. You can be granted 'Leave of Absence'. This means that your 50% attendance requirement at monthly meetings will NOT be adversely affected by those absences.

Keep in Touch. Please let me know if you change your address, email, telephones, or emergency contact details.

A senior citizen in Tasmania was overheard saying, “When the end of the world comes, I hope to be here.” When asked why, he replied, “I’d rather be in Tasmania ‘cause everything happens in Tasmania 20 years later than in the rest of the world.”

Nurragingy Reserve – Tuesday 11th October, 2016

Meet at the WPH Community Centre by 9.45am to carpool for our drive to the Nurragingy Reserve, Knox Road, Doonside.

The name "Nurragingy" commemorates one of the two Aborigines of the Dharruk tribe who received the first land grant to natives from Governor Macquarie in 1819.

The other title holder was Colebee, whose name has been given to the Centre within the Reserve.

An easy pleasant ~ 1½ hour walk around the park which has a variety of bush, gardens & interesting sights.

Lunch at the Lakeside Kiosk, menu available at the 4th Oct meeting, for you to choose or bring your own sandwich/snack – plenty of seating.

We just need fine weather.

Interest form at the October meeting.

A big THANK YOU to all who joined in our “Spring Get-Away” last month to The Entrance.

Despite the depressing forecasts we were fortunate to enjoy good weather for our walks and we believe our various dining experiences were all enjoyable.

Thanks too for those who “donated” their rooms for Happy Hour, and judging by the noise level they were very HAPPY!

Thanks again, Colleen & Eric

Movie group (Hilda Somerfield)

Movie 1 – Sully

This is a fabulous film and definitely a ‘must see’. The movie is the true story of the emergency landing of the American Airways Flight 1549 on the Hudson River in New York on 15th January 2009. The Pilot Chesley Sullenberg is played by Tom Hanks who does a great job.

Here are some Critic reviews.

• A remarkable true story that inspires confidence not only in its leading man, but in honest hard-working Americans everywhere.

• An impressive achievement, a portrait of a good man whose heroism lay in having the right stuff and knowing how to use it during a small eternity of looming chaos and unprecedented peril.

Director: Clint Eastwood

Movie 2 – Bridget Jones’s Baby

I just loved this sequel to the other two Bridget Jones movies. It was laughter all the way through. If you enjoyed the previous two movies then don’t miss this one. The new addition of Patrick Dempsey to Bridget’s world makes this film so much fun and you don’t miss Hugh Grant at all.

Here are some Critic reviews.

• Broad gags, choice turns, and some terrific slapstick involving a hospital revolving door elevate a possibly opportunistic outing into a solid and satisfying comeback.

• More than a match for the original, the third outing for Bridget has a solid story with holes you’ll forgive thanks to the much-missed onscreen magic created by a Director and her leading woman.

Bowling Along (Carol and Bob Dunning)

On Friday September 9th we played our last Competition for the year. It was a perfect day for bowling and we had perfect results this time as well. The Majors Team of George Winter, Dennis Little and Shylie Little (Skip) had a very convincing win. The Minors Team consisted of Ros Ward, Barbara Shannon and skipped by Barrie Steddy. This was quite a close game throughout but on his last bowl of the day, Barrie Steddy put down a brilliant shot to win the end and also the match. This meant that on a countback they were successful in winning the Minors Shield for 2016. Well done to the Minors Team. We all had a great game of bowls and enjoyed the company of like minded Probarians. Congratulations to all who participated throughout the year.

We are holding our Annual Away Trip for 2016 at The Central Coast. We are staying at Forresters Beach Resort and playing bowls at Wamberal and also The Entrance. The dates are Thursday 27th and Friday 28th October. This will be our 9th Bowling Trip since we started our Lawn Bowls Activity Group.

We still have vacancies for any of our Bowlers who have not yet registered to join us for this event.

I have reserved 20 seats for Aladdin the musical and to advise those who were not present at the meeting it is January 2017 Wednesday 4th at 1pm. There are no concession prices for Saturday matinee so to have it in the school holidays I needed to reserve this date.

Final payment for this has to definitely be the November meeting, as Shirley needs to have full payment so that I can pay the very next day. Anyone who intends to send a cheque or transfer funds, needs to ensure that Shirley has the amount in the bank. I will receive an email that evening to confirm who has paid.

If you have transferred funds prior to November meeting will you please email me to advise you have done so.

Golf Group (Lawrie Hayes, Michael Hope, Bob Smealie and Howard Thackray)

With torrential rain on Sunday we thought there wasn’t much chance of playing at Windsor on Monday the 19th. However the morning dawned clear and bright and we had an enjoyable game under sunny skies.

Our numbers were down with some of our usual golfers on holidays. The newest member of our group, Jim Molesworth, and I won the front nine and Bob Smealie and John Goddard the back nine.

The “girls”, played 9 holes with Sandra McGuiness winning the Ladies nearest the pin 2nd shot (over a treacherous water hazard) however the men all failed to reach the green on their first shot.

A convivial lunch in the club house followed the game and we now look forward to next month at Turramurra on the 17th of October.

It was good to have Les McGuiness join us for lunch.

A blonde was bragging about her knowledge of state capitals. She proudly says, 'Go ahead, ask me, I know all of them.' A friend says, 'OK, what's the capital of Queensland ?' The blonde replies, 'Oh, that's easy: Q.'

EXERCISE FOR PEOPLE OVER 60 & UNDER 100

Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-kg potato bag in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can. Try to reach a full minute, and then relax. Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-kg potato bags. Then try 50-kg potato bags and eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-kg potato bag in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute. (I'm at this level). After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each bag.

A married couple were asleep when the phone rang at 2 in the morning. The wife (undoubtedly blonde), picked up the phone, listened a moment and said 'How should I know, that's 200 miles from here!' and hung up. The husband said, 'Who was that?' The wife said, 'I don't know, some woman wanting to know if the coast is clear.’

Returning home from work, a blonde was shocked to find her house ransacked and burgled. She telephoned the police at once and reported the crime. The police dispatcher broadcast the call on the radio, and a Dog Squad, patrolling nearby was the first to respond. As the officer approached the house with his dog on a leash, the blonde ran out on the porch, shuddered at the sight of the cop and his dog, then sat down on the steps. Putting her face in her hands, she moaned, 'I come home to find all my possessions stolen.  I call the police for help, and what do they do?  They send me a BLIND policeman.'

Risk Management MUST READ

Members must consider their personal capabilities before undertaking any activities with the Club. This includes both housekeeping duties and organised activities such as clubs, groups, trips or walks. It is the individual’s responsibility to ensure that they are physically capable of undertaking a particular activity. In particular, please advise the Welfare Officer (Di Cox-Taylor) if you feel that your medical condition precludes you from helping in the hall set up and kitchen rosters.
