SUB CLUB NEWS 6

THE PENSHURST RSL PANTHERS

JUNIOR AFL CLUB Welcome back to all returning

Panthers and their families with a

special embrace and welcome to all

new Panthers. It was simply

fantastic that we could finally start

the junior footy season on Sunday

after weeks, and in some cases

months, of preparation. We would

like to thank our hard working

committee and coaches for the

work they put in during the off

season to get our Club ready for

another season of football.

Our teams were scattered far and

wide on Round 1, but the mighty

green and white Penshurst RSL

Panthers will have a fine season in

2015. Our 2 older teams are now

playing Sydney wide and the

Penshurst RSL logo is now on

display from Manly to Heathcote

and beyond! We are very fortunate

to have quality volunteers and

professionals across all facets of our

club. From the first round they

have pulled together to make match

days a success.

During the off-season we achieved

the Bronze Level of the AFL Quality

Club Program. Part of the process

was revamping or creating a

number of very important policies

that will help us with the

governance of providing a happy

and safe environment so that all of

our players can properly enjoy the

experience of junior footy. These

policies include our new Code of

Conduct, Compliance with Working

with Children Practices, Smoke Free

Policy and Respect & Responsibility

Program. In coming weeks we’ll

upload all these policies onto our

website so that they are accessible

to all.

On 19 April a number of players and

families also represented the club at

the Anzac Commemorative March.

Thanks to the RSL and sub-branch

for hosting the kids from all the

sporting clubs in fine fashion once

again. We still have room for new

players across most age groups so if

you know someone interested in a

great game please refer them

across. The website has all the

contact details.

As always thanks for your support

and see you round the grounds!

TRAVEL CLUB PENSHURST RSL

Twice a year, the travel club aims to run a Mystery Trip. These are always very popular and book out quickly and the first one for this year was on Thursday 26 February. Despite the odd hold-up in Sydney’s peak hour traffic, our Pegasus coach made good progress and morning tea was held at the virtually deserted Tench Reserve on the Nepean River at Jamisontown. This is normally a popular spot with freshwater fishing, eco-tours etc., and is the departure point for the lovely Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler.

From there, we headed up to North Richmond and Kurmond, a very pretty drive. On the Bells Line of Road, we arrived at the “mystery”, the Kurrajong Radio Museum, and were greeted by the

very amiable Pat and Ian O’Toole who run it. Pat had prepared another morning tea which we enjoyed whilst ambling around this fascinating place which was much larger than it looked from the outside. Ian, being a former school teacher and a real radio buff, was the perfect person to speak on the history of radio in Australia and the old radio serials which were one of the main sources of entertainment before the advent of TV.

Time for one last wander around this extensive local and international collection before setting off for lunch – again another mystery! It turned out to be the Warragamba Dam picnic area also deserted - one of the benefits of visiting these places mid-week. A more-than-sufficient

barbecue lunch followed, accompanied by a glass or two of wine and a cleverly prepared dessert by our organiser. We spent a very pleasant couple of hours here ending with a quick visit to the dam itself and were back at Penshurst by 5.30 pm.

If you’d like to join our Travel Club, do come along to a monthly meeting – always in the Club’s auditorium on the first Wednesday of the month from 6.45 pm, or see us in the bistro on the third Monday of the month between 5 – 6 pm. We may be contacted on 9533 5809 or by e-mail: [email protected]. There is also a website which we endeavour to keep up to date: http://pentravelclub.weebly.com.
