1. Background
1.1. Sculptor
The Pentathlon GB results package has been written and maintained by Lawrence Moss over many
years and like all software it has evolved to meet the changing needs of users and the ever
increasing complexity of the rules. Lawrence has spent many thousands of hours to keep the
programme up to date and as flexible as possible to meet the needs of as many different user groups
as possible.
It is based on a core product – Sculptor – which is a commercially available programming language
used for developing a wide range of commercial applications. We are indebted to the owner of
Sculptor, Keith Ashman, who has agreed that the programme may be distributed free of charge in GB
to those users who wish to use the Pentathlon GB results system provided it is not used for any
commercial purpose.
1.2. Installing SCULPTOR 4GL
Sculptor 4GL should be installed on the C:/ drive of your PC.
Sculptor 4GL is a database platform that is needed to enable the Results Application Software to run.
Sculptor 4GL is normally distributed to you using Dropbox. It is a large folder. When it is sent to you,
you will receive an email message from Dropbox and you should download and save the folder onto
your computer desktop by following the Dropbox instructions. If Dropbox is unsuitable, other methods
of distribution are available – please contact Lawrence Moss to find a suitable alternative. The
package is normally too large for email and will be rejected by most service providers.
1.3. Sculptor 4GL Installation Instructions
1. Click on the .exe file named that you will receive. Then follow the on screen instructions.
2. Towards the end of the series of small windows you will arrive at this window. It should be completed
with the values shown and look exactly like this before clicking the ‘OK’ button. Please note that the
activation key starts with ‘VV’ (two Vs) and not ‘W’. When completed click ‘OK’.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 5 of 31
Figure 1 – Sculptor Activation Window
3. The next window announces that the installation is complete and suggests that you re-start your
computer. Please accept this and click ‘Finish’.
4. Allow your computer to fully restart. Time for a cup of tea. You may now install the Results
Application Software for your competition which will be sent separately and is similar but faster and
simpler.
1.4. Results Application Software
The current version of the Results Application Software is Sculptor 6 and is available as a self-install
package which contains some demo data which can be used to familiarise new users with the
software. When supplied to you, double click the setup.exe file and the self-installation will start.
Accept the default settings and the licence agreement. At the end it should start the programme
immediately. It will also install a suitably labelled menu button onto your desktop for future starts.
It is recommended that another folder is made called Sculptor Events in which you will store the
packages for each competition that you will run.
2. Creating the competition package
2.1. Copying an Existing Competition
Once you have the Results Application Software installed, the simplest way to create another
competition is to copy an existing package and then import the new set of entries into it. See point
2.3. for instructions.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 6 of 31
2.2. Launching Sculptor
To open Sculptor you must use the file named menu.q which you will find in the Folder called ‘Bin’
inside the package for your competition – see below. It is best to create a shortcut for this file and put
this on your desktop. Right click on menu.q and select ‘send to desktop’:
Figure 2 – Sculptor Folder
Double click the menu.q file or the shortcut you have created and the following Main Menu screen will
be displayed. The options will vary depending on the type of competition that is being run.
Figure 3 - Sculptor Main Menu - Default Screen Upon Launch

2.3. Importing Entries Into Sculptor
Once you have opened Sculptor you can import the entries data into the programme.
To import your competition entries choose Utilities > Import Entry List. The following dialogue boxes
will appear in turn.
Figure 4 - Import Entries 1
Although it is possible to add competitors individually directly into Sculptor, it is easiest to do so by
loading the data from a csv file (a form of excel spreadsheet) which has been completed with all of
your entries – an example of this can be found within the Supplied Data folder – see figure 8 for its
location. The individual entry approach is best left to adding late entries if the need arises. If loading
from csv file click on the ‘Auto import’ option and click ‘Save’.
Figure 5 - Import Entries 2
This dialogue gives you a first warning that by proceeding you are going to delete the data that is in
your package. Make sure that you are working on a copy of a package and you are happy to lose the
data and click ‘Yes’.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 8 of 31
Figure 6 - Import Entries 3
This is your final warning that you will delete the data in your package. Don’t be scared! If you have
checked that this is a copy of a package that you already have, then you can proceed without worry
and click ‘YES’. If you are not sure then click ‘NO’.
Figure 7 - Import Entries 4
This dialogue box merely confirms that you have deleted all old competition data and you are ready to
import the entries for your new competition.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 9 of 31
The next step opens a window to allow you to navigate to where you have filed your competition
entries file. Select the file containing your entries and click ‘Open’.
Figure 8 - Import Entries 5
Figure 9 - Import Entries 6
The final dialogue box confirms the successful import of your entries.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 10 of 31
You can check your entries by choosing the ‘Heats and Status’ button from the main Sculptor menu.
The following window will open:
Figure 10 – Import Entries 7
The window displays all of the details of the entries that you have just imported. All entries have the
‘Active’ checkbox ticked. This facility allows you to de-activate a competitor if they do not show up for
the competition. Their data is not deleted just in case they turn up!
Once registration is complete or after results for the final discipline have been input, de-activate all
athletes who haven’t competed by un-ticking the ‘Active’ box adjacent to their name. You need to
click into another cell afterwards to cement the de-activation.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 11 of 31
2.4. Setting up your competition
2.4.1. Competition Details
To set your competition details choose Utilities > Competition Details. Click OK to the dialogue box
that pops up. The screen shown below is displayed.
Figure 11 - Setting the Competition Details
Enter the details for your competition. You can modify the following information:
1. Organisation
2. Competition Title
3. Date
4. Venue
5. Competition Type
6. Team Type: Select Club for all competitions except biathlon time trials and the British
Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championships.
The Competition ID should be requested from Pentathlon GB.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 12 of 31
2.4.2. Checking Scoring Parameters
The scoring parameters for your competition should be set to the default values in the relevant Rules.
However, it is essential that you should check them before a competition starts as they are critical to
the scores that will be generated. Biathlon scoring parameters differ from those of other
competitions. You can check them in the Scoring Parameter Management window. Choose Utilities
> Scoring Parameter Management. The window shown below will be displayed.
Figure 12 – Scoring Parameter Management
Each class can be set up independently. If you need to modify the parameters each column has the
following meaning:
Min & Sec: the target time in minutes and seconds for 250 points (1000 for biathlons).
PPS: points allocated for each second plus or minus the target time
SIPS: Scoring Intervals Per Second. For example, if the scoring is 20 points per 0.2 second
then the SIPS = 5. If the scoring is 1 point per half of a second, then SIPS should be set to
2.
The pool length and number of lanes should be set as behind the scenes, adjusted times will be
produced for alternative pool length for the rankings lists.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 13 of 31
2.4.3. Fencing
To set up the fencing pools, go to Utilities > Fencing Pool Management. The following window will
open.
Figure 13 - Fencing Pool Management 1
Click on ‘Change Pool’ and edit the pool number and give the pool an appropriate name.
Click the ‘Import Classes’ button and the following dialogue box and the following dialogue box will
pop up – select ‘yes’.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 14 of 31
Now select the classes for the pool number you are generating. You can select more than one class
for one pool ie in this example we would tick U13 Boys and U13 Girls. Click on ‘Generate Pool’.
Note: If an athlete is a no-show or withdraws before the fence discipline, you should de-activate them
from the ‘Heats and Status’ window – see Figure 10. You will then need to repeat the step above and
re-import classes again repeat this step
Figure 14 - Fencing Pool Management 2
Click ‘Confirm Teams’. This will open the team table showing all selected competitors (see Figure
15). The teams will have been created based on numerical competitor number but the autoswop
feature may be used to freely place competitors into different teams. Autoswop is ON by default.
Each alternate click on competitor numbers will swop the team location for the two competitors
clicked on.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 15 of 31
Figure 15 - Fencing Pool Management 3
Click ‘Save Pool’. Repeat this sequence for any other fencing pools that need to be created.
2.4.3.1. Documentation
Documentation for the fencing can be printed from the Fencing Pool Set up Utility. If time is tight
before the start of the fencing (as is often the case, waiting for confirmation that all athletes have
registered) the first I round pools sheets can be printed first to enable the competition to get
underway.
2.4.3.2. Print Circulation Report
This is the familiar report for distribution at the start of the contest.
2.4.3.3. Print I-Round Sheets
Prints pool sheets for the Individual round for bouts between members in the same team.
2.4.3.4. Print Pool Sheets
Prints pool sheets for contests between fencing teams. Output is ‘by piste’.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 16 of 31
2.4.4. Riding
Sculptor offers a very flexible approach to setting up riding. This allows organisers to arrange the ride
discipline according to ‘local’ rules and not be governed by the rigid application of UIPM Rules. In
particular you can assign different ride courses to different competitors (suitable where simpler
courses are needed for less experienced riders) and assign riders to horses (rather than apply the
formal ‘draw’ process).
2.4.4.1. Setting up the Ride Course
The ride courses are set up by choosing Utilities > Ride Jump Parameters. The window shown here
will appear.
Figure 16 - Set up Riding Course
Up to 4 courses may be created each with
up to 15 obstacles. The ‘Fence’ field is
editable.
Select each field and edit the course
inserting the double and treble in the
appropriate place to match the course. It is
not mandatory to have a double and treble
if a low level course is being used.
Add the Optimum Time for the course.
This may not be confirmed until after the
test jumping but it is essential to remember
to include this as it affects the scoring.
If a second ride course is needed, for
example when you have Under 13 & Under
15 athletes riding a 9 obstacle course,
select ‘2’ from the ‘Select Course’
dropdown menu and repeat the process.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 17 of 31
2.4.4.2. Horse Management
The system needs to know which horses are to be used. This is done in from Utilities > Ride Draw >
Horse List Management. The window below will be displayed.
Figure 17 - Horse List Management
The table is used to produce a horse list for the Round shown in the Round No. textbox located at the
top left of the screen. Choose the Round that you wish to edit.
Columns: These are reasonably self-explanatory. The first five columns in the table are
sortable by clicking on the heading. This toggles from ascending to descending order and
vice versa.
Order: This column defines the order in which the horses are used and allocated to the
competitors and needs to be completed once horses have been allocated to each rider. This
is a manual process. If there is more than one round, this order may change from round to
round depending on the number of horses available. In these circumstances this screen
needs to be revisited and edited.
You should ensure that each number is only used once and that the order includes enough
horses for the number of competitors in the Round.
A/R: You may identify active horses, reserve horses and, if blank, inactive horses. This
column has no software functionality and is for the organiser as a notepad feature. Enter an
‘A’ or an ‘R’ or leave blank as you wish.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 18 of 31
H No. (Horse number): Each horse should be allocated with a unique number. These
numbers may be random if necessary with values up to a maximum of 99. Each number
should be unique.
Horse: Enter the name of the horse against the number that it will have in your competition.
The name should be unique and it is essential that this is accurate otherwise mayhem will
ensue when riders are allocated to their mount!
All other columns: There is provision for recording owner, age, gender, whips, spurs and
martingale. None have any software functionality but it is recommended that the last three
of these fields are completed so that a list of horses may be printed with the details available
for the competitors to read.
2.4.4.3. Push Buttons (Green and yellow)
Copy List: Permits the duplication of a Round. Round number has to be provided, when
asked, and the copied record will contain all horse data from the original record. If the
Round copied does not exist, a new record of the required number will be created.
Clear List: Clears all horse data and leaves the Round table blank. The table may then be
completed with new horse data.
Delete Round: Completely removes the Round from the data files. This action is
irreversible. A Round using the same number as the deleted Round may however then be
created by using the ‘Copy List’ push button.
Next Round and Prev. Round: These are provided to easily navigate between Rounds.
Print List: Open a small window with print options. This enables printing or viewing the
horse list ordered by either Horse number or Draw order ranking.
Close: Closes Horse List window and reverts to parent window, ‘Ride Draw Management’.
2.4.4.4. Ride Draw
The draw is completed manually, determining which competitor is riding in which round, in which
order and on which horse.
Although the ride draw is very flexible, to speed the process, a feature that automatically allocates the
ride order is available. To set up the Ride draw it is suggested that you follow the following steps:
2.4.4.5. Set Ride Round and Ride Order
From the main Menu, click on the ‘Heats and Status’ button.
You will need to allocate a Ride Round to each competitor entered for the Ride. You may have
already done this during the import of entries but otherwise it is a manual process using the cells
under the heading ‘Ride Round’.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 19 of 31
A tip: If there is more than one Ride Round with Round allocation determined by performance based
order prior to the Ride, you may sort the entries in performance order. This is done by clicking the
column heading button in the column headed ‘M Points’. This permits easy allocation of the Round
numbers as required. The sort button toggles: ascending / descending order.
Allocate the Ride Order of the competitors by changing the values in the cells under the column
headed Ride Order. Inactive competitors and non-pentathlon entries should be excluded. You may
now close the Heat and Status Window.
2.4.4.6. Ride Draw Management
From the main Menu, click on the ‘Utilities > Manage Ride Draw and the following screen will appear:
Figure 18 – Ride Timing Control
First Time Up Round 1: Enter the time of day in HH:MM format for the ‘time up’ of the very
first rider in the first Round, normally Round 1. This needs setting just once for the day.
Warm-Up Duration: Enter the value in MM:SS format, the duration of the warm-up duration
in the warm-up arena. Normal value is 15:00.
Interval Between Rides: Enter here the value in MM:SS the interval from the start of one
ride to the start of the next. Normal value is 3:00 although you should use 2:30 for Senior
International events.
Interval Between Rounds: Enter here in MM:SS the interval between the start of the last
ride in one Round until the start of the first ride of the next Round. If the Rounds are
continuous this value will be the same as the Interval Between Rides.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 20 of 31
Note: The Warm-Up Duration, Interval Between Rides and Interval between Rounds are common for
all Rounds. The user may temporarily change these values if necessary but please be aware that all
Rounds will be affected until such time as other values are restored.
2.4.4.7. Print Draw Sheets
To produce printed lists of Competitors and Horses to specify the Riding programme.
Set Round Number: The Round to be printed is selected here.
Printer or Preview radio button: Use these toggle buttons to select hard paper copy or
preview options respectively.
Print: Click here to initiate ‘print’ activity. It is recommended that you first scrutinise the
preview version to ensure that the list is as required.
3. Producing Competition Documents
Having imported your competition entries you can print your competition forms, used mainly by
organisers of biathlon time trials, local or regional competitions. Sculptor will produce
• swim race result lists, which double as start lists
• run start lists
• run race result sheets
To access these sheets, choose Heats and Status > Print Forms. The dialogue box shown in Error!
Reference source not found. will appear.
You can preview the reports before printing them if you wish by selecting the ‘Preview’ radio button.
Select which report you wish to print by clicking the appropriate button. The ‘RUN Start Form by Lane’
is only for competitions using the laser-run.
Figure 19 – Print Race Results Sheets for Run or Swim
An example of each form is shown in Figure 20, Figure 21 and Figure 22.

4.2. Entering Fencing Results
Click ‘Fence’ and an option to choose either detailed or simple entry as shown below:
Figure 27 - Fence Input Selection
The simple option is for use where another programme has
been used to produce the number of hits and defeats. It is
also where any penalties are input ie yellow, red or black card
infringements.
The detailed option is for use where Sculptor is to be used to
record hits and defeats round by round and generate the
results.
If the ‘Detailed’ option is selected the Fence Results Input
screen as shown in Figure 28 will launch.
The form matches the layout of the fencing pool sheets used by the fencing referees. Input is a
simple case of transferring the data from the pool sheets to the screen. A victory is input as 1 and a
defeat as 0.
On ‘OK’ the system loads the next piste in the same round.
Figure 28 - Fencing Input Screen
At the conclusion of the fencing the scores will have been automatically loaded to the results module.
No further input is required.
Appendix 27 - Sculptor Instruction Manual 27 of 31
4.3. Entering Shoot Results
Click ‘Shoot’ and the shoot input screen opens as shown below.
Enter the competitor number and the details of the competitor will be loaded. If the number chosen is
for a competitor who is not shooting an error message will be displayed.
The screen will only permit entries for the appropriate number of shots for the competitors class.
On completion of the entries the focus will be transferred to the ‘Save’ button. Hit ‘enter’ and the
results are saved and the screen clears ready for the next competitor number to be typed in.

details of the competitor will load.
If necessary the name of the horse being ridden can be edited at this point. As the course
progresses the faults incurred can be entered in accordance with the Rules.
At the end of the round the time taken is entered and any time faults are calculated. If wrong time
penalties are being recorded check the time allowed is properly set in the ride course set up.
Note: If the results are recorded in the judge’s box as the ride progresses this does not obviate the
need for a manual scorer who should keep a separate record.
