A Service of the Word ✚ Preservice Music ✚ Lighting of the Candles ✚ Meditation ✚
– ! –1
In observation of October 31, the day when Martin Luther posted the 95 theses, today is Reformation Sunday. Our Mission Committee is taking this opportunity to direct our focus to a key tenant of the Reformation: EVANGELISM. Since we didn’t have a Mission Festival this year, we will take this time to think about the important goal of the Lutheran Reformation: proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ to all nations.
We will do this in two parts:
1. For first part of the worship service today, we will be reading through the story of Jonah in five movements.
2. For the second part of our time today, we will have a 20-30 min Mission Presentation by Pastor David Koenig on India.
(There will be no sermon today.)
~~~ INVOCATION
In the Name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
ISAIAH 12 And in that day you will say:
“O Lord, I will praise You; Though You were angry with me,
Your anger is turned away, and You comfort me. Behold, God is my salvation,
I will trust and not be afraid; ‘For Yah, the Lord, is my strength and song; He also has become my salvation.’ ”
Therefore with joy you will draw water From the wells of salvation.
And in that day you will say: “Praise the Lord, call upon His name;
Declare His deeds among the peoples, Make mention that His name is exalted.
Sing to the Lord, For He has done excellent things;
Jonah: The First Movement Fleeing to Tarshish (1:1-6)
CALL TO WORSHIP Our help is in the name of the Lord,
Who made heaven and earth I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord,
And You forgave the iniquity of my sin. silence to prepare your heart
CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION OF SINS Almighty God, our Maker and Redeemer, we poor sinners confess
unto Thee that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against Thee by thought, word, and deed. Wherefore we flee for refuge to Thine infinite mercy, seeking and imploring Thy grace
for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. O Most Merciful God, who hast given Thine only begotten Son to
die for us, have mercy upon us and for His sake grant us remission of all our sins; and by Thy Holy Spirit increase in us true knowledge of Thee and of Thy will and true obedience to
Thy Word, to the end that by Thy grace we may come to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God, our heaven Father has had mercy upon us and has given His only Son to die fo run and for His sake forgives all your sins. Upon this Your confession, as a called servant of the Word, announce
the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of our Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
The Lord be with you. And also with you.
Let us pray… Amen.
Jonah: The Second Movement Thrown Into the Sea (1:7-17)
CONFESSION OF THE LUTHERAN FAITH Book of Concord: Smalcald Articles “Repentance”
This is what the beginning of repentance is like. Here we must hear the judgment:
“You are all of no account. Whether you are obvious sinners or supposed saints,
you must all become other than you now are and do otherwise than you now do,
no matter who you are and no matter how great, wise, mighty, and holy you may think yourselves.
Here no one is godly.” To this the New Testament adds the consoling promise of grace.
Christ says, “Repent and believe in the Gospel.” In this way we are prepared to receive grace from the Lord and expect and accept the forgiveness of sins from Him.
So Christ also says, “Preach repentance and the forgiveness of sins in His name to all nations.”
Jonah: The Third Movement Praying From the Belly of the Fish (2:1-10)
Jonah: The Fourth Movement The Road to Nineveh (3:1-10)
(Remain Standing for the Presentation of the Offering)
PRESENTATION OF THE THANK OFFERING
♫ Oh, bless the Lord, my soul! Let all within me join
And aid my tongue to bless His name Whose favors are divine.
'Tis He forgives thy sins; 'Tis He relieves thy pain;
'Tis He that heals thy sicknesses And makes thee young again.
– LSB 814:1-3
