COME, HOLY SPIRIT With the celebration of Pentecost today we bring to a close the Easter Season. It has been fifty days since we celebrated Easter and ninety-five days since we observed Ash Wednesday. Ordi-nary Time begins tomorrow but the first and second Sundays of Ordinary Time are replaced by a particular celebration – the Most Holy Trinity next Sunday and the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ the following Sunday. So, while the liturgical color for the weekdays will be green, the liturgical color for the next two Sun-days will be white, as it has been throughout the Easter Season. Today, however, the color is red, represent-ing the Holy Spirit, who came upon the apostles by visible tongues of fire.

Today’s feast marks the birth of the Church. The Holy Spirit was given to the apostles by Christ in a twofold process. At his first apparition after his Resurrection, in the same “upper room” where he had cele-brated the Last Supper, Jesus breathed on the apostles and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained” (John 20:22-23). The Holy Spirit, whom Jesus calls the “promise of the Father,” was given ten days after his Ascension in a more public way, not only to the apostles but to all the believers gathered with them, and to those who accepted the apostles’ preach-ing. The birthday of the Church corresponds with the public proclamation of the gospel by the apostles.

Pope Paul VI said that the Church exists to evangelize. To evangelize simply means to share the good news of Jesus Christ with non-believers or those who do not practice their faith. As the Acts of the Apostles in the New Testament reveals, the Church begins when, by the power of the Holy Spirit, the good news of Jesus Christ is shared with those who did not know or follow him in his public ministry. The first and most dramatic way of evangelization was the preaching of Jesus crucified and risen. It began with Peter’s street sermon, which cut his listeners to their hearts. They said, “What are we to do, my brothers?” He answered, “Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit” (Acts 2:38). They believed what Peter said and were sorry for their sins, wanting to make amendment and to change their future conduct – which is basically what it means to repent. This was not enough, however; they also needed to be baptized to obtain forgiveness and receive the Holy Spirit: “For the promise is made to you and to your children and to all those far off, whomever the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:39).

Whenever we evangelize we participate in the birthing process of the Church. Jesus said that the gates of hell would not prevail against the Church. But he did not establish the Church once and for all, as a fixed monolith set up in the first century for its veneration through the ages. Rather, the Church must be re-born in every generation. She must be reborn in the spiritual rebirth of believers. The Holy Spirit is the soul of the Church, and when he comes to take up residence in the soul of one who is baptized he unites him or her to God’s people. We become members of the Church through Holy Baptism. Anyone who is validly bap-tized is a member of God’s Church, even if they are not in perfect communion with the Catholic Church if they were baptized into a different Christian tradition.

In this first of all the sacraments we are born again of water and the Spirit, as Jesus says in the Gospel of John. This is why the baptismal fount is referred to as “the womb of the Church.” This is also why priests are called “father,” for by their preaching and celebration of the sacraments they give children to the Church, which is our spiritual Mother. In the days before modern science it was thought that the male planted a hu-man being in the woman’s womb. Priests “father” spiritual children by planting them, as it were, in the waters of baptism. They also become fathers by reawakening the faith in those who turned away after baptism. This is done only by the grace of the Holy Spirit, who uses willing servants of God for his cause. Today, of course, deacons also baptize, and it has always been that anyone can baptize in cases of necessity (which is why Catholics are able to accept the validity of baptism in other Christian fellowships). In fact, I would venture to speculate that anyone who leads another person to Christ in some way becomes a spiritual father to him or her.

The Church would no longer exist if she were to stop evangelizing. The Holy Spirit came down on Pen-tecost and about three thousand in Jerusalem repented and were baptized that day. The Holy Spirit is still seeking souls, and moving servants of God like you and me to become apostles to those who do not know what to do when they are convicted of their sin. He seeks to share his message through us in every way pos-sible, by our words, example and prayer. Let us ask him to come and make us all fathers in Christ.

- Father Scott

Readings of the Day Acts 2:1-11, Ps 104:1ab,24ac,29bc-30,31-34, 1 Cor 12:3b-7,12-13,

John 20:19-23 or John 14:15-16,23b-26

Live the Liturgy "God is always more." Have you ever heard that? If we truly believe that He is infinite, then this statement is worth exploring. Today, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit in power upon the early Church. But Pentecost wasn't the first time the disciples received the Holy Spirit. The Gospel actually occurs chronologically before Pentecost. Soon after the Resurrection, Jesus already "came and stood in their [the disciples'] midst... he breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"

God is always more. Sometimes we might think the grace of God as one and done. God might break through in people's lives, but it's a one-time event on a retreat or preceding a dramatic conversion of life. But there's always more to come. Even today's Gospel isn't the first time the breath of God stirred. In Genesis, it's God's breath that stirs life into Adam in the garden. Jesus breathes on the Apostles, giving them the Holy Spirit in the quiet and silence. Later, that breath will stir into a "driving wind", and the Spirit will descend with flame...not unlike Moses on Mount Sinai. He has spoken throughout salvation history, and continues to speak into our lives through His Church and through the Holy Spirit alive in our hearts. This Pentecost Sunday, let us come before Him with expectant hearts! Like the disciples in the Gospel and first reading, let us await what "more" God will do.

On Sunday, June 2, 2019, the following children were welcomed into our Parish Family:

The 2019 Annual Parish Appeal is off to an excellent start. Our goal is $150,000. In the first thirty-one weeks of the 2019 Appeal two hun-dred and seventy-one (271) families have committed more than $126,778 of which $110,556 has been received. The Appeal will sup-port continuing operations of the Parish and will enable us to fund one necessary project. This project is to establish an emergency fund for unbudgeted, major expenses for the church; e.g., the ultimate re-placement of the church roof. The initial contribution to this emergen-cy fund will be one-third of the moneys collected in the 2019 Par-ish Appeal. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the collection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office. You may also use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. The Finance Council and Father Scott thank you for your generosity.

Our average total collection per week has diminished. We are sig-nificantly behind our budgeted needs, approximately $105,000. Our beloved church with the asso-ciated facilities is approaching 18 years old. As in your home, mainte-nance costs and operating costs need to be addressed. You have demonstrated your generosity to enable us to fulfill our fiscal re-sponsibilities. Please continue to be as generous as you can.

Pentecost Prayer

Almighty God, who on this day

did open the way of eternal life

to every race and nation

by the promised gift of thy Holy Spirit:

Shed abroad this gift throughout the world

by the preaching of the Gospel,

that it may reach to the ends of the earth;

through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns

with You, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
