Appreciation Reception

Sunday, May 15

6:00 PM—Donnelly Hall

Stop by to say thanks to

Anita Bohn for her 20 years

on staff as Music Director.

Before she was hired as

our first music director, she

sang at the 5pm mass for

10 years.

All are welcome!

What are you seeking? Can RCIA help?

Deep in our hearts, we have a longing to be closer to God, to feel

that we have a home with him for all eternity. St. Augus$ne

reminds us, “Our hearts are restless un$l they find rest in you.”

The RCIA journey at St. Mary Student Parish is designed to help

people hear and respond to God’s loving call – and especially to

his invita$on for a deeper rela$onship with him. Together, we

will also explore and learn about the Catholic faith, which

provides a pathway to fuller life in the Spirit.

Throughout the year, par$cipants in RCIA (the Rite of Chris$an

Ini$a$on of Adults) are welcome to explore and ask ques$ons as

they discern where God may be leading them.

RCIA sessions will begin formally in September, but inquirers are

welcome to come in any$me to talk. There’s no pressure or

obliga$on, we are happy to meet with you personally to discuss

where you are in this faith journey and what God might be

calling you to explore.

For informa!on on RCIA, or to schedule an appointment, please

contact Rita Zyber, RCIA assistant, at [email protected]

or call 663-0557, Ext 230.

The Breath of Life My mother-in-law had lung disease, which eventually turned into

cancer. For years she towed around an oxygen tank, relying

completely on the life-giving substance flowing through the

plas$c tubing.

As her illness grew worse, she some$mes experienced bouts of

breathlessness. It was scary for all of us, but terrifying for her.

Struggling to draw breath is one of the most basic reminders that

we are fragile humans. We are nothing if we cannot breathe.

In the Scripture readings for this great Feast of Pentecost, Jesus

uses the metaphor of breath to reinforce what the Holy Spirit

means to us today. The Spirit is life. We are nothing without it.

Just as God breathed life into the world during its crea$on, Jesus

pours out that same God-breath on us, re-crea$ng us with new

life and new energy.

In the readings, we also see other metaphors for the power of

the Holy Spirit. God seems to realize that the disciples – s$ll

paralyzed with fear – need a li'le more, so he goes even bigger

in the drama department. With driving wind and whipping

flames, God sends a pre'y strong message – this is big.

Some$mes he literally has to smack us in the face to get our

a'en$on.

The grand gesture works. Suddenly, the disciples find they can

achieve feats that they never imagined were possible. Of course,

this applies to us, too. Any $me we open our locked doors to let

in the Spirit, we too can find ourselves “enabled.”

Pope Francis preaches o!en about the Holy Spirit and he

reminds us to stay open, so the Spirit can come in.

“Are we open to ‘God’s surprises’? Or are we closed and

fearful before the newness of the Holy Spirit? Do we

have the courage to strike out along the new paths

which God’s newness sets before us, or do we resist,

barricaded in transient structures which have lost their

capacity for openness to what is new?”

(Pope Francis at Pentecost: May 19, 2013)

As we close out the holy days of the Easter season, may we

remember, and live these words of hope.

Rita Zyber is the RCIA Assistant/

Coordinator. If you or someone you

know might be thinking about

becoming Catholic or comple!ng the

sacraments of ini!a!on (Bap!sm,

Eucharist and Confirma!on) please

contact her at

[email protected].

Michigan Water Crisis: A Town Hall

Thursday, May 26, 2016 from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm

Jesus calls us to give drink to the thirsty. Water is life; water is a

necessity; water is sacred. All too o!en our sacred right to clean,

safe water is denied as we tragically see happen to our neighbors

in Flint and Detroit.

On Thursday, May 26th from 7:00 pm-8:30 pm in Donnelly Hall,

we will gather as a community to listen to the stories of those

in$mately affected by the water crisis in Michigan. Featured

speakers will include Father Tom Firestone, pastor of St. John

Vianney Catholic Church, and Sister Carol Weber, founder of

St. Luke N.E.W. Life Center, as well as undergraduates and youth

involved in service work in Flint. Fr. Tom and Sr. Carol are

dedicated advocates for the people of Flint. There will be

opportunity for ques$ons and conversa$on.

Come and be inspired to give drink to the thirsty and to advocate

for jus$ce. All are welcome. (We will be collec!ng disinfectant

wipes and hand sani!zer to bring to the people of Flint.)

Contact Bill Alt, Campus Minister for Social Jus!ce,

for more [email protected]

The St. Mary’s Discussion Group will feature a presenta$on by

members of the Mercy House Community. Mercy House is an

Ann Arbor resident's home that has opened its doors to the

homeless. The home is a refuge during the day for Washtenaw

County residents who need shelter from the winter weather, as

well as companionship, warm meals and use of ameni$es. In the

tradi$on of the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality, this residency

seeks to bless others by providing shower facili$es, washer and

dryer, and even emergency housing. Peggy Lynch and Cynthia

Wilson will join us to describe the work of Mercy House and to

answer ques$ons.

The mee$ng will be held in Donnelly Hall on Sunday, May 22. We

will gather at 2:30pm for conversa$on and snacks and begin dis-

cussion at 3:00. For more info, contact Sherry Warden at

[email protected] or 734-663-8818.

All are welcome to attend!

Centering

Prayer Mondays at 6:30 PM

Centering Prayer is a method of silent,

contempla$ve prayer in which thoughts

and feelings are s$lled as we simply seek

to be with God. It is rooted in centuries-

old monas$c prayer. The book Open

Heart, Open Mind by Fr. Thomas Kea$ng,

OCSO is a good introduc$on. All are

welcome. The first Monday of each month

is a special introductory session, during

which we listen to an audio tape that

describes the method of Centering Prayer

session. Otherwise, we typically sit for two

20-minute silent prayer sessions with a

short medita$ve walk in between.

Why support the Diocese of Lansing?

Each year, our Diocese asks parishes to par$cipate in the Diocesan Services Appeal (DSA). It's

a reminder that as a parish, we are part of the larger church and that our Diocese exists to

direct and support the work of many Catholic parishes.

Each year, our parish contribu$ons help more than 100 ministries

and programs of the Diocese. One of the most important ini$a$ves has been the con$nued

assistance in Flint.

Con"nuing the call to help in Flint

Long before the water crisis in Flint became na$onal news, our Catholic parishes and services

were at work in this unique city.

Bishop Boyea launched a special campaign last year called “Faith in Flint,” urging all parish

member in the Diocese of Lansing to learn about the economic situa$on in Flint and to help

with dona$ons, volunteer $me and prayers.

Through the Faith in Flint program, our Diocese has been at the fore-front of economic issues

in Flint, even before the discovery of the water crisis throughout the city.

Our DSA dollars also help with:

V Service to the poor and homeless

V Training and support for new priests

V Training and resources for catechists

V Ministry and assistance at area prisons

V Marriage prepara$on and marriage retreats

V Support for the elderly and chronically ill

V Special events for our students, such as the Middle School Youth Rally

V Religious educa$on materials for the deaf

This year's theme is taken from II Corinthians 8:7, "See that you also excel in this Grace of

Giving." Once again, we are reminded that everything we have is a gi! from God. In response

to God's Grace, we freely share our $me, our talents, and our financial resources with those

who need it most.

Please help us to reach our 2016 DSA goal of $73,468. With your help, our parish can achieve

this and hopefully receive some of the pledge money back. Once we reach our goal, the

Diocese will return 50 percent of any paid pledge monies received, over and above our parish

goal.

We want to specially thank those parishioners who have already contributed. If you haven't

yet made a pledge, we ask you to prayer-fully consider your DSA gi!. Please allow yourself to

be mo$vated by gra$tude to God, making a generous return to the Lord.

Thank you for your generosity!

monthly on the first and third Tuesday of the month. Mee$ngs are private and confiden$al.

As a diverse community of believers, we respect each person as a unique reflec$on of God’s

presence in our midst. We commit ourselves to being a community of care, support,

forma$on, reconcilia$on, and witness to jus$ce with and among gay and lesbian persons,

their parents, family members, and friends.

We teach that all love comes from God and focus on helping people reconcile their faith

with their orienta$on. We provide a safe space for discussion, healing, and prayer. Together

we reflect on Scripture and listen to the lived experience of lesbian and gay persons and

their allies. For more informa$on, contact Mark at [email protected].

Registration for

Family Faith Formation and Teen Confirmation Now through September 1

The Family Faith Forma$on program is for registered parish families

whose eldest child is in at least kindergarten and serves students

through the seventh-grade academic year. It is a home-based catechesis

program that requires parents/guardians and children to a'end a

monthly forma$on class (Sundays, October-May) and work at home on

lessons.

The Sacraments of First Reconcilia$on and First Eucharist are typically

completed in the 2nd-grade year and it is encouraged that children have

received at least one year of faith forma$on before their sacramental

prep year.

Teen confirma$on is for eighth-grade students who have completed the

sacraments of bap$sm, reconcilia$on, and Eucharist. Our teen

confirma$on program meets 2-3 $mes a month on Sunday a!ernoons

between October-May. Teens a'end most sessions on their own with

parental/guardian involvement at some of the sessions. In addi$on to

a'ending class, teens are required to complete a faith forma$on text at

home, complete 25 hours of service, and a'end a day-long retreat. It is

recommended that teens come to their confirma$on prepara$on year

with recent faith forma$on experience. More informa$on and

registra$on forms are available in the parish office. Space is limited, so

early registra"on is recommended.

Families who are interested in our faith forma$on programs, but are not

registered parishioners as of April 1, 2016 are welcome to register for

both programs star$ng August 1, 2016. Final deadline for all registra"on

is September 1, 2016.

Reading II Romans 5:1-5

We are at peace with God our Father through our Lord

Jesus Christ. God’s love has been poured into our hearts

through the Holy Spirit. This Spirit, who is Wisdom itself,

will lead us into all truth. How wonderful the name of our

triune God in all the earth.
